Glenn Irwin ‘very weak in areas' upon return to British Superbike Championship

Irwin joined the reigning BSB championship-winning team alongside Kyle Ryde after parting company from the Hager PBM Ducati team following a disagreement over his desire to return to racing this weekend. The 35-year-old is riding a Yamaha R1 for the first time in his career and was 16th in Saturday's race after a seven-week absence from the series, before claiming 15th in the Sprint race and 17th in the final race of the weekend at the Hampshire circuit yesterday. 'I felt very good in some parts of the track but at the same time, I also felt very weak in areas,' Irwin said. 'We'll have a good look at the data and it's a race under our belts. 'Congrats to Kyle [Ryde] on grabbing another win and I look forward to joining him, but just a little bit of adapting to do still. We can try to make the bike work a little bit for me. 'There's some things maybe that you have to ride the bike in a certain way. I feel like we're understanding that and there's some things I feel the bike can do naturally a lot better, so just blend that into my style. 'It's weird and I'm not going to lie, despite being happy to come back, when you're 16th or whatever it's a strange one.' Danny Kent sealed a double on the McAMS Yamaha for Northern Ireland's Mar-Train Racing outfit. Kent, who was a double winner at the Classic Bike Festival Ireland recently at Bishopscourt Racing Circuit in Co Down, held off Saturday's race winner Kyle Ryde (Nitrous Competitions Racing Yamaha) on the last lap to seal his first win of 2025 in the Sprint race by 0.097s on the dash to the line. Championship leader Bradley Ray finished a close third on the Raceways Yamaha. Kent said: 'It's been a difficult season so far, the change we made at Brands has paid dividends. 'All weekend we've been really strong and even though we had a podium yesterday, I knew there was an area we could improve on and the team smashed it. The bike felt mega out there. 'I just want to say a massive thank you to McAMS Racing because it's not been easy, and we've managed to turn the page.' Kent passed Ray at the end of the penultimate lap in the last race and although Ray tried to his back at the final chicane, he went wide, with Kent cutting back to regain the lead and wrapping up his brace by 0.196s. Christian Iddon was third on the AJN Steelstock Kawasaki ahead of Ryde. Andrew Irwin (Honda Racing UK) was sixth and seventh yesterday, with Scott Swann (Send My Bag/IWR Honda) in 18th and 11th respectively in the two races. Ray's lead at the top is now 26 points over Ryde after six rounds, with Kent moving up two places into third overall, 90 points behind Ray. In the British Supersport class, title leader Rhys Irwin from Donegal crashed while leading on his Suzuki, resulting in a red flag. Irwin won Saturday's opening race but was ruled out of the restart. The incident-hit race was eventually won by Aussie Ben Currie on the Moto Rapido Ducati, with Eugene McManus from Randalstown in fourth on the MMB Racing Ducati ahead of Dubliner Jack Kennedy (Honda Racing UK). Eglinton's David Allingham finished second in the National Superstock 1000 race yesterday on the SMS/Nicholl Oils BMW behind championship leader Ilya Mikhalchik (ROKiT BMW). Peter Willis from Cullybackey was 12th in the British Talent Cup race, while Jack Burrows claimed 14th. Antrim's Nikki Coates was fourth in the main BMW F900 Cup race. The seventh round of the British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park takes place from August 22-24.

Glenn Irwin to make British Superbike comeback with new team after shock Hager PBM Ducati split

The Carrickfergus man was confirmed to be departing the Ducati side by 'mutual consent' on Tuesday morning after the two sides reached a 'point of conflict' in their discussions over his comeback from a horror crash at Snetterton in June that left him needing surgery on his pelvic region. Irwin had sounded an optimistic note that he could be back as early as this weekend however, despite that, in a statement by Hager PBM Ducati it was revealed that the pair have parted ways by 'mutual consent', with former British champion Scott Redding drafted in as Irwin's replacement for the remainder of the season. It did not take long for the 35-year-old to find a replacement ride, however, with Nitrous Competitions OMG Racing Yamaha confirming only an hour later that they would be adding Irwin to their roster for the remainder of the campaign alongside defending British champion Kyle Ryde, running two bikes for the rest of the year. We need your consent to load this Social Media content. We use a number of different Social Media outlets to manage extra content that can set cookies on your device and collect data about your activity. Irwin will take to the grid at Thruxton at the weekend on his new machine for the first time, with team owner David Williams commenting: 'Nitrous Competitions OMG Racing are excited to have Glenn join the team. "Between him and Kyle, we believe we have the strongest pairing on the current grid, and are entering the second half of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship season with a stronger sense of optimism than ever.' Irwin raced under the Hager PBM Ducati umbrella from 2016 to 2018 before rejoining in 2023, winning 19 races and racking up a further 23 podium finishes, and he nearly delivered the 2023 British Championship to the team, missing out by half-a-point to Tommy Bridewell. 'Hager PBM Ducati and Glenn Irwin have announced that their contractual relationship has been terminated by mutual consent,' said Hager PBM Ducati's statement, with the team riding only one bike for the rest of the year. 'Following Glenn's serious accident at Snetterton in June and period of recovery it was the opinion of the team that his return should be deferred until at least after Round 7 at Cadwell Park. 'This decision was taken by the team management on the ground of managing competition expectations and a duty of care to Glenn as despite recovering to a position where 'fitness to ride' could potentially be achieved, the team felt that risks remained in this early period of recovery that a subsequent fall could result in a further, complicated injury. 'As a result of a point of conflict the parties have agreed to terminate their contractual relationship, and Glenn is free to pursue other opportunities to fulfil his insistence to immediately return to competition.'

Andrew Irwin reveals his target for a successful weekend as he looks to get British Superbike season back on track

Irwin admits his 2025 season has proved challenging so far, with the 30-year-old leaving Snetterton empty-handed two weeks. The Carrickfergus man crashed twice and was outside the points in the Sprint race, finishing 19th. Irwin, currently 16th in the championship, was 12th in the combined free times yesterday at Knockhill on a wet track. He is now looking ahead to today's opening race (4.00pm) and is focused on putting some points on the board at a circuit he enjoys. 'I'm looking forward to Knockhill, it's a track that I've always enjoyed,' said Irwin. 'The start of my season hasn't gone exactly to plan but we were fast at Donington and I think that will translate into how we run this weekend. 'Three solid races is the plan, from which we can really change the shape of our season from this point onwards. 'I've got good memories of Knockhill; last year, we ran well and I was quick in the wet, which may be a factor this year. 'It feels like sort of a home round; the Scottish fans are really welcoming and the circuit is truly unique. 'Certainly, it's a big change from Snetterton last time out, and the variety of tracks that we get to race on in BSB is part of what makes the series so good.' His older brother, Glenn, is out of action this weekend through injury following a crash in practice at Snetterton. The Hager PBM Ducati rider underwent surgery on his sacrum after suffering hip and pelvis fractures in a high-side. The 35-year-old was fortunate to avoid being struck by brother Andrew and Scotsman Rory Skinner in the aftermath, who did not see him lying prone at the side of the track because of a cloud of dust kicked up by Irwin's crash. The two-time title runner-up has been replaced in the PBM team by former champion Scott Redding, who was 13th fastest yesterday on his return to the series. 'It's exciting for me to be back racing in front of the BSB crowd this weekend at Knockhill,' said the 2019 champion. 'Obviously, I have some really great memories with the team from when we won the title back in 2019 and as always I want to do the best job I possibly can for myself, our sponsors and the team. 'I want to put on the best performance I can with this opportunity and I also want to wish Glenn a speedy recovery from his injuries.' No official timeframe has been given for Irwin's return but the Ulster rider pledged to be back in the saddle during the current campaign, while Jordan Bird, co-owner of the PBM squad, said his recovery was 'going well'. Storm Stacey (Bathams AJN BMW) was fastest yesterday from Danny Kent (McAMS Yamaha), Josh Brookes (DAO Racing Honda) and championship leader Bradley Ray (Raceways Yamaha).

Glenn Irwin's team offers new update on rider's health after horror crash at Snetterton

Irwin came off on Saturday morning and suffered fractures to his pelvis and hip. He narrowly avoided being struck by his brother Andrew and Scottish rider Rory Skinner, who did not see him lying at the side of the track amidst a cloud of dust. The Carrickfergus man was taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and will miss the next round at Knockhill in Scotland. In a statement, the Hager PBM Ducati team confirmed a replacement rider is being sought to fill in for Irwin. 'After lengthy discussions with his medical team, Glenn is scheduled to undergo surgery on his sacrum (pelvic region) this Thursday morning,' the statement read. 'We understand the serious nature of this injury and our heartfelt thoughts and best wishes are with Glenn during this difficult time. 'Following the procedure, we'll be focusing on his recovery with an intensive rehabilitation plan. Until that gets underway, it's not possible to predict a timeline for his recovery and his return to the Hager PBM Ducati team and the British Superbike Championship. 'We know Glenn will be greatly missed from the BSB grid, and we're truly grateful for the overwhelming support and kind messages we've received. 'The understanding from the sponsors and the series organising at this difficult time is also most appreciated, and the team is working hard on finding a suitable stand-in rider with the aim of being back on track at Knockhill.' Irwin was only 12 points behind England's Bradley Ray before the Snetterton round but said his championship hopes had been 'ruined' by the crash. Ray claimed a second successive BSB treble on the Raceways Yamaha at Snetterton to make it seven victories from eight races so far in 2025. The 28-year-old holds a 30-point advantage at the top of the standings over reigning champion Kyle Ryde. In a video message posted to social media from his hospital bed on Saturday night, Irwin said his ambition of winning the BSB title remained unaltered. 'I apologise to the team because we've ruined our championship challenge for sure, we will be missing for a little while,' he said. 'But, in true 'Glenn' spirit, we're resilient, we're determined, we will be back, and the goal is what the goal has always been, and that's to lift the British Superbike Championship.'
