Arsenal set to reward Myles Lewis-Skelly with mega long-term contract to ward off Real Madrid's advances

New sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to be taking a hands-on approach with contract extensions, needing to tie down fellow Hale End graduates Ethan Nwaneri and And boss READ MORE SPORT STORIES Arteta views Lewis-Skelly as the future of the club, already making him his first-choice left-back after a stunning breakthrough campaign for the teenager that saw him make his Prem debut in September before scoring on his senior England debut in March. Such is his faith in Lewis-Skelly, Arteta has let Kieran Tierney, 27, leave on a free back to Celtic this summer and is open to selling Oleksandr Zinchenko, 28, with Borussia Dortmund interested. Lewis-Skelly – alongside his first team pal Nwaneri, 18 – has also never hid his love for Arsenal as a boyhood fan, and recently revealed his ambitions for next term. Going five years without silverware and a third-successive second-place Prem finish, he said: 'We just want to win, to make that jump to win a trophy, back-to-back trophies.' 'I am a fan of the club, so I was growing up watching them on TV, going to the games. In your mind you're always wanting to get where [the first team] is at.' Myles Lewis-Skelly winds up Real Madrid fans as Arsenal knock Los Blancos out of Champions League Midfielder Nwaneri is also holding talks with Arsenal over an extension, having signed his first professional deal in March 2024, having worked his way through the academy from the age of nine alongside Lewis-Skelly. Nwaneri is expected to receive a hefty rise in wages, as is Lewis-Skelly, having proved himself to be one of the most exciting teenage attackers in Europe. Having made 37 appearances in all competitions this term – 16 of those starts – and scoring nine goals, Nwaneri has been happy with his involvement under Arteta, and trusts the Spaniard with his development. However, there will need to be discussions over Nwaneri's role next year, both in terms of position and regularity, especially with Arteta targeting several attacking reinforcements this summer, currently linked to Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres, RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams. During Bukayo Saka's three-month absence from December following hamstring surgery, Nwaneri deputised on the right wing, but can also play as a false nine and No10. Despite the £51m midfield arrival of Martin Zubimendi, Arteta will view Nwaneri as an integral squad member whose flexibility and all-round ability is highly valued. Arsenal defender Lewis-Skelly ‘destined' for World Cup place
Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour believes Myles Lewis-Skelly can become England's starting left-back for the 2026 World Cup. The 18-year-old has recently been included in Thomas Tuchel's squad for the upcoming international fixtures against Andorra and Senegal. Advertisement On his senior England debut against Albania back in March, the left-back announced himself at Wembley Stadium with his first goal for the Three Lions. In an exclusive with The Football Faithful, in association with NetBet Sports Betting, Parlour claimed the teenager has all the ingredients for success. 'With a debut like he had, maybe he is destined for the top at international level,' the former England player declared. 'Myles has a great team around him, a very supporting family and he is well grounded and knows he needs to keep learning and listening to the coaches and working really hard. Advertisement 'He has this position now, so hopefully he can keep it for the next World Cup.' Naturally, Lewis-Skelly is far from the finished article. The Englishman has only made 39 senior appearances and, while gaining several plaudits for his industrious performances and fearless approach to matches, he hasn't been faultless in his maiden campaign. The teenager has been sent off twice in 2025, although his red card against Wolverhampton Wanderers was later rescinded. The full-back also received criticism for his display against Paris-Saint Germain in the Champions League semi-final. At his tender age, every mistake can be used as lesson, which Parlour was quick to corroborate. Advertisement 'He did have a tough game in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, so he must learn from that,' Parlour said. 'He just has to mature well, keep his feet on the ground, listen to Mikel [Arteta] at team level and Tuchel at international level and keep working hard at his game. 'Consistency is key to reaching the next level, but he has made a very bright start,' Parlour added. The defender is the latest success story off the Hale End production line. Bukayo Saka has famously flourished from an Arsenal academy prospect into one of England's most important players in recent years, with the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly hoping to follow suit. Advertisement Hale End is widely-regarded as one of the best academies in the country, with Parlour believing it to be the finest. 'You look at the recent talent in Saka, Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly and with Max Dowman coming through a well, Arsenal are showing the investment in the academy is proving it's worth. 'It's so hard to bring through players and give them first-team exposure. The step up from academy and playing in the U18 and U21 leagues is the biggest step a player can make, but these three lads have made it look easy. 'And this is down to the coaches and team at the club, who ensure they adapt well.' 'It's not fair' - Ashley Cole tells fans to 'relax' over Arsenal youngster
Ashley Cole has urged Arsenal supporters to 'relax' and give Max Dowman the time and space he needs to develop at his own pace at this early stage of his career. Dowman, 15, is considered to be among the most promising young talents in Arsenal's academy and has been widely tipped for a big future in Mikel Arteta's first-team. Teenage duo Myles Lewis-Skelly, 18, and Ethan Nwaneri, 17, have both enjoyed remarkable breakthrough seasons this term, emerging from the Hale End youth ranks to establish themselves as genuine stars in north London. And while Dowman is yet to make his senior bow, the England Under-17 midfielder became the youngest ever Premier League 2 player in December and has trained with Arteta's squad with increasing frequency in recent months. 'I have had so many texts about Max recently,' Arsenal and England midfielder Declan Rice told the BBC when asked about Dowman last month. You can be the best 15-year-old in the country, but it doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be at 18 so you need to be hungry, keep working and keep pushing. 'I speak to Max a lot and he has got such a good family around him. He is unreal.' Featuring as a guest on the latest episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, former Arsenal left-back Cole suggested 'everyone would know' Dowman's name before too long should he continue on the same trajectory. But Cole warned fans against putting too much pressure on the teen given he is yet to even play a single minute for the Gunners' first-team. 'He's another one who has come through the Arsenal ranks,' the legendary ex-England full-back said. 'With everything online now, you get to see little clips of these players. It's tough because I don't know how they handle pressure. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'Firstly, you're giving these players a platform. There are companies on Instagram that post youth team games and clips of players and it's great because the players are getting exposure. 'But on the flip side of that, it's also adding pressure and do you want to add pressure to a 16-year-old? Their time will come. 'If they can keep continuing to do what they're doing and playing well, everyone will know their name in two or three years. But there is a lot of pressure on these kids. 'We're talking about him but has he even played a first-team game yet? In my opinion, you have to be a little bit more careful on how how you handle this younger generation of players.' According to Cole, the level of expectation and pressure on Dowman's shoulders is 'unfair'. 'You heap this pressure on these players and I don't think it's fair,' he added. 'I bet every Arsenal fan is going, 'Why is he [Dowman] not being more involved in the first-team? Why is he not getting a chance?', but hold up. 'He's doing exams as well, by the way! Similar to Myles [Lewis-Skelly] but let's relax a little bit and let time take its toll and hopefully they will get their opportunity and then everyone will know their name.'
