Hamas Commemorates 1st Anniversary of Haniyeh's Assassination
DaysofPal- The Hamas Movement marked today as the first anniversary of the assassination of the prominent Palestinian leader and head of its political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, who was martyred on July 31, 2024, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted his residence in Tehran, Iran. Haniyeh's assassination was part of the systematic Israeli campaign to eliminate top leaders of the Palestinian resistance. Haniyeh left a profound impact on both the Palestinian political landscape and public sentiment, given his symbolic national stature and key leadership role in Hamas and in confronting Israeli occupation. Born in 1963 in the Al-Shati refugee camp in western Gaza City, Ismail Abdul-Salam Ahmed Haniyeh grew up in poverty, like many Palestinians in the camps. He studied at UNRWA schools, earned his high school diploma from Al-Azhar Institute, and later graduated with a degree in Arabic literature from the Islamic University of Gaza in 1987. As a university student, Haniyeh was an active member of the student council and was deeply involved in athletic and social activities. He worked at the Islamic University and eventually became its dean in 1992. After the release of Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, Haniyeh was appointed head of his office in 1997. He was arrested several times by Israeli forces and was deported to Marj al-Zuhour in southern Lebanon in 1992 along with around 400 leaders and cadres from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Upon returning, he assumed senior roles within the movement. Haniyeh rose to greater prominence in 2006 when he led the 'Change and Reform' electoral list, which won a majority in the Palestinian Legislative Council. He was then tasked with forming the 10th Palestinian government, becoming the first prime minister from Hamas. Throughout his political career, Haniyeh survived multiple Israeli assassination attempts, where he was injured in an Israeli airstrike in 2003 and faced numerous travel restrictions. Also, his motorcade came under fire during internal clashes in Gaza in 2006, and his home was targeted repeatedly during Israeli offensives. Despite these challenges, Haniyeh remained a proponent of national reconciliation with the Palestinian Authority. He agreed to step down as head of the de facto government in Gaza to form a unity government. In 2017, Haniyeh was elected head of Hamas's political bureau, succeeding Khaled Meshaal, and he was also re-elected in 2021. The U.S. State Department designated Haniyeh a 'terrorist' in January 2018 during heightened tensions after the Trump administration recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Until his assassination, Haniyeh was a central figure in Palestinian decision-making. He was known for balancing internal and external pressures and political and military priorities, and maintaining communication with regional and international actors to break Gaza's siege and defend national principles. On the morning of July 31, 2024, Hamas announced that Ismail Haniyeh had been killed in a surprise Israeli airstrike that struck his residence in Tehran. He was in Iran to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. One of his guards also died in the attack. In a statement, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that an investigation into the incident was underway, and later Iranian state media confirmed Haniyeh's martyrdom and the death of his bodyguard. Today, Palestinians and Hamas supporters around the world mark the solemn anniversary of his martyrdom, reflecting on his enduring legacy and continued influence on the Palestinian resistance. Hamas Surprised of U.S. Envoy's Remarks, Reaffirms Commitment to Ceasefire Deal
DaysofPal- The Hamas Movement expressed surprise late Thursday over remarks made by U.S. envoy Steve Weitecov, describing them as negative and misrepresentative of the group's stance. Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to continuing negotiations and reaching a permanent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. The movement said in an official statement that its latest response to the mediators' proposal came after extensive consultations with Palestinian factions, friendly nations, and mediators. Moreover, Hamas emphasized its positive engagement with all feedback received, calling it a reflection of its 'sincere commitment to supporting international mediation efforts and constructively engaging with all proposed initiatives.' It added that it was surprised by Weitecov's critical comments, especially given that the mediators themselves had welcomed the group's response and described it as constructive and encouraging toward a comprehensive deal. On Thursday, U.S. envoy Steve Weitecov stated that the United States had decided to pull its negotiating team from Doha for consultations, citing Hamas's latest response as a sign of 'lack of genuine intent to reach an agreement.' Weitecov claimed that 'Hamas is not showing goodwill despite the intense mediation efforts,' noting that Washington is exploring alternative options to secure the release of hostages and restore stability in Gaza. However, Palestinian-American businessman Bishara Bahbah disagreed with Weitecov's assessment, calling Hamas's response 'realistic and sincere.' In a post on Facebook, Bahbah wrote: 'Hamas submitted its response this morning to the Israeli proposal on troop deployment and prisoner exchange. It was a genuine and positive reply. Now Israel must engage in serious and swift negotiations to reach a ceasefire. The people of Gaza have had enough of killing, destruction, and hunger.' Meanwhile, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that, in light of Hamas's response, the Israeli negotiation team was recalled from Doha for further consultations in Tel Aviv. Israel's public broadcaster cited an unnamed source saying 'critical decisions must now be made,' and that the move had been coordinated with all relevant parties. On the ground, the Israeli occupation forces continue genocide and famine atrocities against people of Gaza for the 658th consecutive day, which has resulted in ongoing massacres targeting civilians, particularly women and children, and has deepened the humanitarian catastrophe amid a suffocating blockade on the war-torn enclave. Hamas Responds to Gaza Ceasefire Proposal
DaysofPal- The Hamas Movement stated early Thursday morning that it has submitted its response to the ceasefire proposal via Arab mediators. 'A short while ago, we submitted our response, along with that of the Palestinian factions, to the ceasefire proposal through our brothers, the mediators,' said Hamas in a brief statement. On Wednesday, well-informed sources said that the Hamas Movement had delivered its reply after making consultations with Palestinian factions regarding the revised proposal aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire. The sources indicated that Hamas's response focused primarily on the entry of humanitarian aid, withdrawal maps, and guarantees to ensure a permanent end to the war. Since July 6, the parties have been negotiating in Doha, under Qatari and Egyptian mediation, with support from the United States, to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and prisoner exchange in the Gaza Strip. Over the past 21 months, several rounds of indirect negotiations have been held between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Qatar and Egypt. During this time, two partial agreements were reached, the first in November 2023, and the second in January 2025. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu evaded implementing the latest agreement and resumed the genocidal war on Gaza on March 18, 2025. Since October 2023, the Israeli occupation forces have waged a war of extermination against Gaza's population, resulting in the killing of more than 59,000 Palestinians, the injury of over 143,000, and the displacement of nearly the entire population of the Strip, amid destruction unprecedented since World War II, according to Palestinian and international reports. Hamas: Famine in Gaza has Reached Catastrophic Levels, Immediate Action Needed
DaysofPal-The Hamas Movement warned on Thursday that famine in the Gaza Strip has reached dangerous levels, threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of residents amid a blockade that has lasted for over 21 months, and the ongoing Israeli aggression against the territory. In a press statement, Hamas said that the Israeli occupation is deliberately using a policy of 'starvation and denial of basic necessities' as a tool of genocide, describing it as 'one of the most horrific crimes committed against children and innocent civilians in modern times.' Hamas strongly criticized the silence of the international community and its institutions, particularly the UN Security Council, stating that ignoring the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe 'sets a dangerous precedent that reinforces the logic of lawlessness and contempt for international and humanitarian laws.' The Movement called on Arab and Islamic countries and the United Nations to take immediate action to pressure for the lifting of the siege imposed on Gaza and to allow the urgent entry of food and humanitarian aid. It emphasized the urgent need to end the cycle of killing, genocide, and brutal starvation. Shortlink for this post:
