Auger-Aliassime gives up two-set lead in French Open loss to Arnaldi

PARIS – Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime is out of the French Open after giving up a two-set lead in a 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 first-round loss to Italy's Matteo Arnaldi on Tuesday. Arnaldi, who roared back into contention after being soundly defeated in the second set, picked up his fourth and fifth breaks of the match in the final set. Auger-Aliassime saved three match points in the final game before his long return clinched the match for Arnaldi. The 36th-ranked Italian held serve throughout the final two sets, including Game 6 of the fifth when he faced double break point, to eliminate the 29th-seeded Auger-Aliassime. Auger-Aliassime, who had medical timeouts before the fourth and fifth sets to work on his left ankle, looked like he was headed for a convincing win. He picked up the first break of the match to go up 6-5 in the first set, then served to love to take a 1-0 lead. The Canadian carried that momentum into the second set, where he went up 4-0 by converting breaks in Games 1 and 3 and serving to love in Games 2 and 4, ultimately winning the set 6-2. But after Auger-Aliassime picked up his fourth break to open the third set, Arnaldi finally got to the Canadian's serve. The Italian scored breaks in the second and fourth games en route to taking the set 6-3. Arnaldi then tied the match 2-2 after converting the only break of the fourth set while looking increasingly confident on serve. Auger-Aliassime, who entered the clay-court Grand Slam on a roll after reaching the semifinals of the Hamburg Open last week, failed to join fellow Canadians Gabriel Diallo and Denis Shapovalov in the second round. The farthest Auger-Aliassime has made it at Roland Garros is the fourth round, a feat he accomplished twice before losing to the eventual champion (Rafael Nadal in 2022, Carlos Alcaraz last year). Toronto's Victoria Mboko, the lone Canadian remaining in the women's singles draw, faces Belgium's Eva Lys in a second-round match Wednesday. Mboko won her Grand Slam main-draw debut with a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over New Zealand's Lulu Sun in the opening round. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 27, 2025.

Zverev unharmed after plane to Paris struck by lightning

Zverev unharmed after plane to Paris struck by lightning German tennis star Alexander Zverev hopes his grand slam luck has changed after his plane heading to the French Open was struck by lightning. He was dumped out of his home Hamburg Open this week in the last 16 amid a stomach virus and more drama followed as he tried to reach Paris for the clay grand slam, which starts on Sunday. 'After take-off, there was a lightning strike on the plane and we had to return to Hamburg and make an emergency landing,' Zverev told reporters. 'It seemed pretty funny because there was only a little noise, no real shaking or anything. It was the first time I'd been struck by lightning in the air.' Zverev arrived in Paris late and on a different plane, but does not play his first-round match against the American Learner Tien until Tuesday. 'It's not an injury, but a stomach virus. It will go away, then I'll feel OK again. I hope to be 100% fit,' he added. Zverev has yet to win a grand slam singles title and lost last year's French Open final in five sets to Carlos Alcaraz. His clay form this season has been mixed. 'The first matches will be important for sure,' added the world No.3. (DPA)

Flavio Cobolli beats Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4 to win Hamburg Open

HAMBURG, Germany — Flavio Cobolli defeated Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the Hamburg Open on Saturday for his second title of the season. The 35th-ranked Italian player saved six of the seven break points he faced — including two at 5-4 in the second set — to beat the 17th-ranked Rublev, who was playing in his third Hamburg final. Rublev won in 2020. 'I have to say sorry to Andrey because today I played unbelievable. I am so happy and proud of myself,' said Cobolli, who won his first title in Bucharest in April. 'I passed many battles this year and this kind of day is good for your mind. I am so happy.' The 23-year-old Cobolli is set to rise to a career high in the rankings after his latest win.

Cobolli upsets Rublev to win Hamburg Open

HAMBURG, Germany: Italy's Flavio Cobolli won the biggest title of his career when he upset third seed Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-4 to win the Hamburg Open on Saturday. Ranked number 35 in the world, Cobolli had only one ATP 250 title to his name, having won the Romanian Open last month, but the 23-year-old now has two claycourt titles after beating Rublev in the final of the ATP 500 event. He is just the third player to win multiple titles on the ATP Tour this year after Carlos Alcaraz (three) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (also two), while the victory will see him rise to a career-high 26th in the rankings. "I think it is the best moment and match of my life for sure. I have to say sorry to Andrey because today I played unbelievable. I am so happy and proud of myself," Cobolli said. "I can see my family, friends, brother and girlfriend here and it is a surprise. I am really happy. I passed many battles this year and this kind of day is good for your mind. I am so happy, I just want to (lift) the trophy." After Cobolli convincingly took the opening set, Rublev went 3-2 up in the second but the momentum shifted after a 31-shot rally where the Russian tried to make Cobolli run for most points. Cobolli turned the tables when he fired a scorching forehand winner to get the point and as the Italian put his hand to his ear to get the crowd roaring, a spent Rublev bent over in exhaustion. Rublev never recovered and although he had seven break points in the contest, Cobolli saved six of them. The Italian converted all four of his own break points to wrap up the match in an hour and 28 minutes. He will have no time to rest, however, as he looks ahead to a match against former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic in the first round of the French Open, which begins on Sunday. — Reuters
