The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is aimed at enhancing and modernising railway stations across the Indian Railways network. Under the scheme, a total of 1,275 railway stations, including 61 under SWR, have identified for redevelopment. In the first phase, 103 railway stations, including five under SWR, namely Gokak Road, Gadag, Munirabad, Dharwad and Bagalkot, have been redeveloped and are ready for inauguration. In fact, a few of the railway stations that dated back to the British era like Gadag and Munirabad have been completely demolished and new spacious railway stations have come up in their place with more amenities for the travelling public. In Gadag, three additional dormitories have come up in the new station building making it a total of four dormitories. Gadag now has two waiting rooms, one each for male and female passengers. This apart, there is an airconditioned waiting room too. The G+1 floor building is spread over 2,097 sq m and the platform shelter now extends to 10,700 m. With the new building, Munirabad Railway Station which caters to thousands of pilgrims visiting Huligemma Devi Temple in Huligi has got three retiring rooms, an AC waiting room and three dormitories. Like Gadag, Munirabad too has got spacious 12 m foot overbridges which is now the standard measurement for such facilities. Both these stations have exclusive arrangements for physically challenged people. When this correspondent visited Munirabad Railway Station, the artistes of Srushti Ads were busy painting the famous stone chariot of Hampi. 'In all, there will be 10 paintings of Hampi monuments at Munirabad that will highlight the glory of the Vijayanagara empire. This apart, we plan to present the colourful Huligemma Jatre on the compound walls of the station building,' artist Sumangala Bhat of Sirsi said. Her team has been given the responsibility of giving cultural touch to the walls of the station buildings at Gokak Road, Munirabad and Bagalkot. 'These stations which are icons of modernity with embedded heritage have been redeveloped with a view to serving the passengers in the most comfortable way. Amrit Bharat Stations are redefining the role of railway stations in a passenger's travel experience,' Chief Public Relations Officer Manjunath Kanamadi has said. The cost Under the scheme, Gokak Road Railway Station in Belagavi district has been renovated at a cost of ₹16.98 crore, the second entrance at Dharwad Railway Station cost ₹17.10 crore, Munirabad Railway Station ₹18.40 crore, Gadag Railway Station ₹23.24 crore and Bagalkot Railway Station has been redone at a cost of ₹16.06 crore. Naturally, passengers are happy with the new look of the railway stations and also the amenities which they have already started availing of. However, what needs to be seen is how passengers will cooperate with railway administration in the upkeep of the stations. 'We also have to keep in mind that these facilities are for us and they will be in good condition as long as we use them properly,' said Sharanappa Busare who was waiting for a train at Munirabad Railway Station.

‘Sindoor' tattoos a rage among Hampi youth

HOSAPETE: How to wear patriotism on your sleeve? Hampi and Hosapete seem to have an answer. In the wake of India's awe-inspiring response, 'Operation Sindoor', hitting terrorist bases in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir as well as in the heartland of Pakistan, college students in these towns have set an example for the country's youth to emulate--tattoo the iconic words 'Sindoor' on their arms. The trend is not just limited to locals. Many foreign tourists, including Israelis, have applied 'Sindoor,' on their arms, in an apparent tribute to the brave Indian soldiers who brought Pakistan to its knees in retribution to the dastardly Pahalgam terrorist attack late April. The tattoo shops in the towns are doing brisk business. The cost starts from Rs 600 and goes up to Rs 1,500 depending on the size of the etching. The colour of the etching depends on skin tone, said Ganesh N, one of the tattooists. Some of the youth said they will have 'Sindoor' etched as temporary tattoos while others swear they will keep them for ever.

This Indian temple was built by ghosts and supernatural beings in just one night!

India's ancient temples are more than just places of worship, they are the beating heart of mythology, legend, and an integral part of the timeless stories. May it be the floating stones of Rameswaram or the musical pillars of Hampi, every sacred structure seems to tell stories of the divine, the mysterious, and the miraculous. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These temples are not just a part of the spiritual devotion but also building blocks of history and folklore. A similar legendary tale lies in the centuries-old that is situated in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, in the village of Sihoniya, Morena district. The ancient 11th-century Shiva shrine is not only a setting example of stonework and symmetry, but it also has a spine-tingling legend that surrounds it. This mythological story blurs the lines between the excellent architecture and the supernatural, and has been passed down through generations What is the tale about? According to local legend, the Kakanmath Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, dates back to the reign of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty. But it also has a truly unforgettable story surrounding its supposed construction, involving divine intervention, celestial builders, and a condition that was tragically broken. The tale begins with a devout king, determined to build the grandest temple in honour of Lord Shiva. Yet, the ambition of the design and the challenges of construction seemed insurmountable. Desperate and deeply faithful, the king prayed for a miracle. His prayers were answered in a dream, where Lord Shiva appeared and assured him that the temple would be completed in a single night but with a catch. "No human shall witness the process," as warned by the deity in the dream. The king accepted the divine condition and ordered the entire village to stay indoors as the construction began under cover of darkness. That night, the air was said to buzz with unseen energy, echoing with the eerie sounds of chisels and hammers wielded by invisible hands. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But as fate would have it, a young boy, overwhelmed by curiosity, couldn't resist. He peeked out his window, and in that moment, the supernatural workers vanished, leaving the temple nearly finished but forever incomplete. Proof in the stones? Even today, visitors to the Kakanmath Temple point to the temple's state as evidence of this myth. The soaring shikhara, which was once believed to rise up to 100 feet, now stands at roughly 40 feet, weathered by time. Some carvings are notably unfinished, and parts of the structure appear rough or oddly unrefined as if the sculptors had vanished in the middle of the process. Myth vs. History Of course, the rational mind seeks answers beyond folklore. Archaeological studies attribute the temple's construction to the highly skilled artisans of the 11th century, who labored meticulously under the Kachchhapaghata rulers. Despite the myth, there's no evidence of supernatural involvement, but just centuries-old artistry and engineering perfection. Excavations reveal that the temple was the result of precise planning, stone-by-stone craftsmanship, and a cultural commitment to architectural grandeur.

Adopt tiger cubs and get to name them

Mangaluru: The Pilikula Biological Park will soon invite the public to adopt and name two tiger cubs born to the 14-year-old tigress Rani in Dec. As part of the park's animal adoption programme, citizens can adopt the cubs for a year at a cost of around Rs 3-5 lakh each. Pilikula Development Authority commissioner in-charge, Dr Arun Kumar Shetty, said that this will be part of a major drive expected to be launched in May. "We already held one round of discussions with the deputy commissioner, and slabs and details of animals available for adoption have been finalised. Meanwhile, spot adoptions are also being considered. This drive is essential, keeping in mind the upkeep of animals, he said. "The annual cost of caring for a tiger is around Rs 5 lakh. This is for the adult tigers, including vaccination, feeding, routine treatments like deworming, and maintenance. We are looking for donors to adopt these cubs for a year, and the adopter will also have the privilege of naming them, as the cubs have not yet been named," said ACF Prashanth Pai, director in-charge of the park. A male and a female cub were born on the night of Dec 20. "The cubs are healthy. Their vaccination is complete. We will wait for at least six months before shifting them to the enclosure," Pai said. The tigress was brought to Pilikula in 2016 from Bannerghatta Biological Park through an animal exchange programme. She gave birth to five cubs in 2016 and three in 2021. The zoo is now home to 10 tigers, including five males. Recently, two king cobras were sent to Bhopal zoo in exchange for two Royal Bengal tigers. However, the transfer has been delayed due to the prevailing hot and humid conditions on the coast and pending enclosure preparations. In another potential exchange, the park is considering acquiring a sloth bear from Hampi in return for a tiger. The bears in the park have grown old. However, a final decision will be made following discussions with the commissioner, PDA and the deputy commissioner, he said. Recognised as one of the country's 17 major zoos by the Central Zoo Authority, the park houses more than 1,200 animals, birds, and reptiles. Unfortunately, so far only one blue gold macaw has been adopted.
