Quiet farewell before Sungai Korok tragedy stays with victim's sister forever
JITRA: Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak was not his usual self on the morning of the tragedy that claimed his life, along with those of his wife and four children, according to family members. The 32-year-old, usually cheerful and chatty, appeared unusually quiet. "He hugged our mother tightly. He hugged me too, and told me to take care of her," said his sister, Nor Hanani Mawaddah, 30, when met at the family home in Taman Seri Aman here today (July 9). "He usually talks a lot, but that night, he just stared… quiet, pensive. "When I asked him to stay the night, he said he couldn't. He had work, and his wife had to open the stall early the next morning." Little did Nor Hanani and the rest of the family know that Azim's silence was his quiet farewell, a moment that would stay with them always. Hanani, who lives in Arau, said it was her youngest sister, Nur Adliah Syuhada, who broke the devastating news the following day. "She said, 'Abang's gone'. And deep down, we just knew he was in there (Sungai Korok)," she said. Azim had returned to their family home the night before. After he failed to respond to calls, Mawaddah and the family began searching. "We started looking on Saturday and continued through Sunday. "We just had this gut feeling. We even went to the canal. Every time we passed that spot, we felt uneasy. "I remember we prayed, we made the azan, hoping that if they were in there, something would happen." On Monday morning, the family's worst fears were confirmed. The bodies of Azim, his wife Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, and their four children, Putra Rayyan Nur, 9; Hawa Adriana Nur, 8; Annayla Humaira Nur, 7; and six-month-old Tuah Haydar were found inside their submerged Proton Iswara in Sungai Korok. Initial investigations showed the vehicle may have skidded off the road and plunged into the river while the family was travelling home to Jerlun. Hanani is now calling for improved safety measures at the stretch where the accident occurred. "This year alone, three people have fallen in at the same spot. It's dangerous. Something must be done." She also shared how close-knit the family was. The children, she said, were especially attached to their extended family. "They didn't need a fancy outing to be happy. Even a chance to play together in a portable pool was enough. "My sister Syuhada has one. On holidays, she would set it up, and the kids would play for hours. We all joined in. It was our thing."

National Women's Policy 2025–2030 Aims To Empower Women, Strengthen Nation
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- The third edition of the National Women's Policy (DWN) and Women's Development Action Plan (PTPW) 2025–2030 serves as a strategic guide to implement programmes, initiatives and collaborative efforts by all stakeholders. Women's Development Department (JPW) director-general Hanani Sapit said the renewed policy reflects the government's ongoing commitment under the Malaysia Madani framework to uphold and elevate the status of women, ensuring they continue to be respected, celebrated and recognised across sectors, both locally and globally. 'This policy, led by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, is not solely the responsibility of the ministry. It is a national-level policy involving federal and state governments, the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and civil society,' she said during an interview on Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today. The updated policy focuses on four key areas, namely economy, leadership, safety and well-being. Implementation began immediately following its launch on March 8 in conjunction with International Women's Day. Hanani said that in drafting the policy, the government strengthened engagement with ministries, agencies and NGOs to ensure it is embedded at the grassroots levels. At the same time, JPW, through its State Women's Development Offices, will continue to intensify advocacy and literacy programmes in communities. The DWN and PTPW 2025–2030 aim to enable women to participate meaningfully and realise their full potential through inclusive development and gender equality. The slogan 'Empowering Women, Strengthening the Nation' was adopted to reflect the role of women as national assets, capable of shaping the country's economic growth, given that they make up nearly 50 per cent of Malaysia's population. The policy also emphasises the importance of shared leadership between men and women in national development, in line with the demographic ratio of 111 men for every 100 women. 'This inclusive approach is crucial to ensure that policy and programme development remains people-friendly and socially inclusive. Gender equality is not just a moral goal, but a critical driver of economic and social progress,' she added.

Israeli settlers kidnap two Palestinian children, tie them to a tree
Israeli settlers kidnapped two Palestinian children on Saturday and tied them to a tree near the city of Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank. The incident occurred in the afternoon, as a group of children were playing near their homes on the outskirts of Beit Furik, east of Nablus. A group of settlers approached and abducted the two children. Local residents managed to catch up with the settlers and rescue the children. However, the boys remain in a distressed psychological state. Mohammed Hanani, the children's uncle, told Middle East Eye that his two daughters and their cousins were playing outside their home when a group of settlers arrived from a newly established outpost built on the town's land. The settlers kidnapped 13-year-old Maryam and her three-year-old brother Ahmed, taking them to a remote area where they tied them to an olive tree. One of their cousins tried to intervene but settlers attacked him with stones. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters "My two little girls came crying and screaming, so we chased after the settlers. We eventually found the children unconscious and tied to a tree," he said, "The settlers had fled to the outpost on an ATV. We untied the children and rushed them to the health centre," he added. While the children did not sustain physical injuries, they remain in a state of extreme terror and psychological distress. "My daughter, who witnessed the incident, still refuses to leave the house and cries all the time." Alarm bells This is the first reported incident of settlers kidnapping children in the town, which has faced repeated attacks since the establishment of the new settlement outpost following the start of the war on Gaza. Hanani said that in recent months, settlers had torched his car and the truck he uses for work, set fire to his crops and repeatedly attacked his home with stones. Israel is arbitrarily jailing Palestinian children in record numbers. This must stop Read More » "All of this material damage is being compensated, but kidnapping and assaulting children sets off alarm bells and puts our lives in direct danger," he said. According to Hanani, the aim of these attacks is to force Palestinians off their land and out of their homes, clearing the way for settlers to take over the area. The Israeli army was not present at the scene at any point during the incident, residents said, though it responds quickly if settlers are threatened anywhere in the West Bank. In July 2014, Israeli settlers kidnapped Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdeir from the town of Shuafat in occupied East Jerusalem. They took him to a forested area, where they tortured him before burning him alive. Settler attacks on Palestinians and their property in the West Bank have intensified under the current extreme right-wing government. The highest rates of land confiscation, assaults on landowners, livestock theft and the establishment of settlement outposts have been recorded since this government took office in 2022. What sets this government apart is the level of support and encouragement it provides to settlers, whether through supplying them with weapons or funding the creation of new outposts. This backing has enabled and emboldened settlers to carry out attacks on Palestinians, with the aim of displacing communities and annexing their land.
