Rafizi, Nik Nazmi's resignations won't hinder progress of NESP, says Deputy Economy Minister
Hanifah confirmed that the 13MP is almost ready to be presented to the Cabinet, while work on the NESP is actively ongoing. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (June 5): The resignations of two key ministers will not disrupt the progress of the National Environmental, Social and Governance Strategic Plan (NESP) or the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), both of which are nearing completion, said Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib. To a question on the progress of NESP and 13MP, Hanifah Hajar confirmed that the 13MP is almost ready to be presented to the Cabinet, while work on the NESP is actively ongoing. 'All ministries understand the importance of ESG (environmental, social and governance), and our civil servants have been working on it with clear ideas they want to implement,' she told reporters on the sidelines of the Forward Faster Symposium 2025 hosted by the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) here today. It was reported that the 13MP document is expected to be tabled in Parliament next month. However, she noted that a definitive timeline for the delivery of the NESP has yet to be confirmed. This follows the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as Minister of Economy and the resignation of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, which will take effect on July 4. Earlier in her keynote address at the symposium, Hanifah Hajar said the NESP is aligned with global ESG frameworks and complements six pillars under the National Sustainability Strategic Framework and Industry ESG. 'The NESP is a comprehensive initiative aimed at guiding Malaysian businesses toward ESG compliance and sustainable practices. It will support Malaysian business entities, especially small and medium enterprises in phases, to move toward ESG reporting and even beyond compliance,' she said. The one-day symposium brought together over 200 participants, including high-level executives, sustainability practitioners, and business leaders. With the theme 'Accelerating Corporate Sustainability Commitments for a Resilient Future,' the event featured in-depth discussions and high-level dialogues on the evolving role of business in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The discussions were seen as timely amid economic headwinds and rising geopolitical tensions, with Malaysian corporate leaders increasingly strengthening their ESG commitments and positioning sustainability as a strategic tool to manage risk, drive long-term value, and contribute to national development. – Bernama

NexG plans to raise investment in Cambodia
KUALA LUMPUR: NexG Bhd plans to further increase its investment in Cambodia, particularly in the digital and logistics sectors, said its chief executive officer Datuk Hanifah Noordin. This was expressed during his meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the 46th Asean Summit and Related Meetings here last week. According to Hanifah, NexG is offering its expertise in the provision of high-security digital identity documents, while the logistics sector is being offered through MMAG Holdingd Bhd, in which NexG holds a 19 per cent stake. Hanifah stated that his group's core operations lie in information and communication technology, with a specific focus on digital security. He noted that MMAG is already involved in logistics services at the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport. He added that the group plans to expand its operations and invest further in Cambodia's growing digital economy. The prime minister praised NexG's vision and outlined the Cambodian government's strategic push to enhance the logistics sector through improvements to key infrastructure. This includes the expansion of the Sihanoukville deep-sea port and the development of airports and road networks. He also emphasised the government's priority on digital transformation during the 7th Legislature, describing it as a national priority aimed at modernising the economy and attracting foreign investment. NexG said the prime minister encouraged all interested Malaysian firms to continue close cooperation with Cambodian institutions, emphasising his government's commitment to fostering a transparent and investor-friendly environment that supports long-term economic growth. Lim Heng, vice president of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, told the Khmer Times that Cambodia's proactive investment promotion led by Hun Manet had been praised by business leaders following his recent engagement with potential investors during the Asean meetings in Malaysia. "The prime minister consistently attracts investors. During the Asean meetings in Malaysia, many companies, especially representatives from various countries' chambers of commerce, brought potential investors to meet with the prime minister and received guidance on exploring investment opportunities in Cambodia," he said. Heng added that such efforts reflect the leadership's commitment to nurturing a pro-investment climate. "Meeting directly with companies that are still uncertain about Cambodia helps them gain a better understanding of the country and boosts their confidence to invest, especially with the pime minister's personal assurances," he said.

‘Still much to achieve': Minister tells oil and gas sector to ramp up clean energy efforts
KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies are being urged to explore viable alternatives for operating their businesses or harnessing natural resources, which could help the country diversify its energy sources in line with the energy transition. Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib highlighted Sarawak's progress in renewable energy — including the use of rivers for hydropower, the development of hydrogen for electric vehicles, and the exploration of algae for sustainable aviation fuel. She noted that Malaysia has made significant progress on most of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — as of 2024, the country has achieved a projected 43 per cent of the 248 global SDG indicators, compared to the global average of just 17 per cent. 'Among these, under SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, the country has achieved 99.7 per cent. Furthermore, we have reached a record high in renewable energy usage, at 19.7 per cent. 'This progress notwithstanding, we are conscious that there is still much to achieve in the battle against climate change,' she said in her officiating speech at the OGSE100 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) Forum 2025 here yesterday, themed 'Driving Sustainable Energy Innovation Globally'. She emphasised that Malaysia must adapt to geographical challenges, particularly by elevating infrastructure, utilities and buildings to higher ground. 'I have come to realise that these extreme weather events are becoming the new normal, and we must now learn to adapt to these conditions to minimise the impact on lives and livelihoods. 'Is Mother Nature able to adapt and still provide our needs? 'This, I believe, is where private sector companies can step in, and in the case of OGSE being part of the energy transition, can identify and offer solutions to combat climate change, not only with profit in mind, but also for the benefit of people and the planet,' she said. Hanifah called the leaders of OGSE in Malaysia to take the lead, elevate their technical know-how, and continue driving innovation by offering cleaner and greener OGSE businesses, and even going beyond Malaysia for the sake of Mother Nature. — Bernama
