Goa University secures an A+, its highest-ever NAAC grade

Panaji: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on Friday awarded the A+ grade to the Goa University after its latest cycle of assessment. This is the best grade yet awarded to Goa's lone and state-run varsity, marking a historic shift for the institution. The A+ grade is a significant jump for the varsity from the B++ grade awarded to it in the last assessment cycle by NAAC in 2022. GU also attained a very high cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.30. Its score in the last cycle was 2.86. 'This achievement is a testimony to the hard work, integrity, and dedication of the entire university fraternity. It inspires us to aim higher and fulfil our vision of becoming a globally recognised centre of excellence,' GU vice-chancellor Harilal B Menon said. The peer committee of NAAC visited Goa University last week. Until now, the highest grade ever awarded in NAAC assessment to the GU was 'A' with a CGPA score of 3.09 in 2014. The NAAC assessment is carried out based on seven parameters — curriculum; teaching-learning and evaluation methods; research, innovation and extension activities; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance, leadership and management; and institutional management and best practices. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The jump in the GU's score indicates a significant improvement in all these parameters. A NAAC A+ grade denotes 'very good' performance by a university and is one of the highest recognitions an institute of higher education can achieve. The GU made major changes which appear to have helped improve its grade significantly, including setting up a research park and introducing several new and innovative programmes like masters in AI, and entering into collaboration with institutes of national repute. Recently, the university revised a decades-old policy to remove the two-seat capping on seats reserved for students from other universities per postgraduate programme. It made 10% of seats available to students of other universities in every programme, without a cap. This was to meet diversity and inclusion parameters under national evaluation systems like NAAC. The accreditation process not only helps the institution to identify its strengths and weaknesses but also helps enhance its reputation and influence among stakeholders like students, employers, and funding agencies. The NAAC accreditation is a quality assurance certification awarded to higher education institutions.
