Teacher suspended over charge of smoking on school premises
Ludhiana: A government primary school teacher in Mangat-3 block has been suspended with immediate effect following serious allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour reported by the local panchayat.
The suspension order was issued by Harkirat Kaur Chane, director, school education (elementary), after the matter was brought to the attention of the education department.
The suspended teacher, who was working under the Elementary Trained Teacher (ETT) cadre, faced multiple complaints from both parents and panchayat members. According to the formal complaint submitted by the village panchayat, the teacher was repeatedly accused of poor behaviour with students and smoking on the school premises, which reportedly left several students unwilling to attend school.
"Despite repeated warnings, her behaviour did not improve. Students were scared to come to school, and her actions were having a harmful impact on the children," stated a complaint from panchayat to the DEO. The teachers further alleged that parents had regularly reported the teacher's erratic behaviour, leading to a sharp decline in student attendance.
The panchayat highlighted that the teacher had admitted to smoking on the school premises, a serious violation of conduct and school discipline.

Parents had voiced concerns that such behaviour not only violated norms but also set a poor example for impressionable children.
In response to the complaints, Ravinder Kaur, district education officer (Elementary), confirmed the suspension. "We have acted promptly after receiving the complaint. The teacher has been suspended with immediate effect, and an inquiry will be conducted. Further action will be based on the findings of this investigation," she stated.
She also said that the teacher had previously been suspended from another primary school, raising concerns over how she was reinstated without proper behavioural assessment.
