What LSU football is getting in Houston safety transfer A.J. Haulcy
BATON ROUGE — The spring transfer window has been good to LSU football. Coming off the heels of spring football practice wrapping, Brian Kelly told reporters that he really liked where his team was and that he and his staff would only pursue transfers if it were guys that appear to be players that could contribute in 2025. Advertisement Safety was a position that the LSU coaching staff was going to make an addition if there was a good fit. The Tigers found their guy. A.J. Haulcy, a transfer from Houston, committed to LSU late Sunday night, he announced via his social media pages. Haulcy has just finished a visit to Baton Rouge to check out LSU Sunday and made his announcement known shortly thereafter. Houston transfer A.J. Haulcy commits to LSU LSU already added North Carolina State safety transfer Tamarcus Cooley during the window transfer portal opening and he completed spring practice with the Tigers last month. There'll likely be some learning early in fall camp for Haulcy, Cooley and LSU's other safeties — including returners Jardin Gilbert, Javien Toviano, Dashawn Spears, Joel Rogers and more. Regardless of where he plays, Haulcy packs plenty of experience and production with him from Houston. The 6-foot, 215-pound senior amassed 74 tackles, five interceptions and eight passes defended which earned him All-Big 12 honors in 2024. He was the conference's Defensive Newcomer of the Year after recording 98 tackles in 2023. Updating LSU football's safety depth chart after addition of AJ Haulcy
LSU football entered the spring transfer portal window with one of the best transfer classes in the country, but the Tigers weren't done yet. In recent weeks, LSU added defensive tackle Bernard Gooden from USF and safety AJ Haulcy from Houston. LSU head coach Brian Kelly liked where the roster was at, but LSU didn't pass on the chance to add more impact players to its defense. With Haulcy, LSU is getting a veteran safety ranked as a top-30 transfer by On3. Despite a handful of strong additions to the defense, LSU still needed a safety. The Tigers signed TaMarcus Cooley in January, but he could see time as a nickel. Haulcy fits the classic safety mold. LSU is losing a significant amount of its safety production from the 2024 squad. Major Burns graduated while Sage Ryan, Kylin Jackson, and Jordan Allen hit the transfer portal. Burns and Allen both made starts, while Jackson served as a depth piece. Returning, LSU has Jardin Gilbert, Javien Toviano, DaShawn Spears, Joel Rogers, and Austin Ausberry. Gilbert will be returning from an injury, and the rest of the group lacks experience. With Haulcy on board, let's take a look at LSU's updated safety depth chart. Need a break? Haulcy gives LSU a reliable option. According to PFF, Haulcy posted an 80.5 defensive grade in 2024, ranking No. 4 among Big 12 safeties. That would have been the best grade on LSU's roster. Between his time at New Mexico and Houston, Halucly has 2,121 collegiate snaps. He's now one of the most experienced players on LSU's defense. Haulcy picked off five passes in 2024 and can play down in the box. That's just the type of player LSU needed. Gilbert and Spears will still play Da'Shawn Spears saw a good bit of action as a true freshman in 2024 and by all accounts LSU was pleased with his progress in the spring. Haulcy's arrival doesn't take Spears out of the picture. The talented safety will still get a chance to contribute in 2025. If Gilbert is healthy, he'll also rotate in. Gilbert was inconsistent in 2024, but there's optimism about Gilbert taking a step forward after he played banged up last year.

A.J. Haulcy Can be a Difference Maker for LSU
If LSU had any question marks on defense going into 2025, the secondary, and more specifically safety was at the top of their list. While the unit is loaded with potential, A.J. Haulcy brings experience and leadership that will be valuable to everyone on defense. On A.J.'s Instagram stories, he posted a picture of the campus and also a commitment graphic with the caption 'Let's make history 100! Nattyyyboyzz'. Advertisement He also shared a quote which sheds some light on his reasons for transferring. A.J. posted,, 'Switch your environment. Sometimes you gotta see more to be more.' In a graphic shared by Haulcy from Hayes Fawcett from On3, Haulcy is wearing the #2 jersey. A.J. wore the #2 last season but previously wore #24 at Houston and New Mexico. In light of Kyren Lacy's passing, I imagine the #2 will be extra meaningful this year. In 2022, Haulcy visited LSU's stadium as a freshman on the Lobos. Under the bright lights of Death Valley, A.J. performed well recording eight tackles. LSU won the game 38-0. Last season, A.J. started in all 12 games for Houston at safety. He tied for the Big 12 lead with five interceptions and was second in the conference with 13 passes defended. Haulcy was selected by Phil Steele as an All-American honorable mention. He was selected first team All-Big 12 by the Associated Press, Phil Steele, and league coaches. Additionally, in 2023, Haulcy was also named Big 12 Conference honorable mention defensive newcomer of the year. LSU football adds one of the transfer portal's elite defenders
LSU football's transfer portal class just got even better as safety AJ Haulcy joins the group. The news was reported by 247Sports' Matt Zenitz on Sunday night. Haulcy comes in as an All-Big 12 first-team selection from Houston, where he played the past two years and compiled 171 tackles and 10 pass deflections. He hauled in five interceptions in 2024. Combined with his freshman year at New Mexico, he has 2,121 snaps under his belt. Advertisement Haulcy fills a need for LSU after the Tigers didn't add an experienced safety in the first portal window. LSU likes the young talent it has at the position, but Kelly jumped at the chance to add an impact player to the secondary, continuing Kelly's aggressive approach to recruiting the transfer portal. His staff put together the nation's top transfer class, starting with a strong showing in the winter window, and it only got better with Haulcy's commitment. The Houston, TX native is the No. 31 overall prospect and No. 2 safety in the spring transfer portal window, according to On3's Industry Rankings. He came out of high school as a three-star prospect but quickly played above his ranking as he made 86 tackles during his rookie year. Haulcy is the 18th transfer of the cycle for LSU. Like much of the class, there's a good chance he earns a starting role this fall. LSU safety play was inconsistent in 2023 and 2024 -- the staff is hoping Haulcy can bring stability to the position.
