Updating LSU football's safety depth chart after addition of AJ Haulcy

USA Today07-05-2025

LSU football entered the spring transfer portal window with one of the best transfer classes in the country, but the Tigers weren't done yet. In recent weeks, LSU added defensive tackle Bernard Gooden from USF and safety AJ Haulcy from Houston. LSU head coach Brian Kelly liked where the roster was at, but LSU didn't pass on the chance to add more impact players to its defense.
With Haulcy, LSU is getting a veteran safety ranked as a top-30 transfer by On3. Despite a handful of strong additions to the defense, LSU still needed a safety. The Tigers signed TaMarcus Cooley in January, but he could see time as a nickel. Haulcy fits the classic safety mold.
LSU is losing a significant amount of its safety production from the 2024 squad. Major Burns graduated while Sage Ryan, Kylin Jackson, and Jordan Allen hit the transfer portal. Burns and Allen both made starts, while Jackson served as a depth piece.
Returning, LSU has Jardin Gilbert, Javien Toviano, DaShawn Spears, Joel Rogers, and Austin Ausberry. Gilbert will be returning from an injury, and the rest of the group lacks experience.
With Haulcy on board, let's take a look at LSU's updated safety depth chart.

Why transfer AJ Haulcy can start right away
Like I said, LSU's returning safeties all have question marks, whether it be inconsistent play in 2024, injuries, or just a lack of experience. Haulcy gives LSU a reliable option.
According to PFF, Haulcy posted an 80.5 defensive grade in 2024, ranking No. 4 among Big 12 safeties. That would have been the best grade on LSU's roster. Between his time at New Mexico and Houston, Halucly has 2,121 collegiate snaps. He's now one of the most experienced players on LSU's defense.
Haulcy picked off five passes in 2024 and can play down in the box. That's just the type of player LSU needed.
Gilbert and Spears will still play
Da'Shawn Spears saw a good bit of action as a true freshman in 2024 and by all accounts LSU was pleased with his progress in the spring. Haulcy's arrival doesn't take Spears out of the picture. The talented safety will still get a chance to contribute in 2025.
If Gilbert is healthy, he'll also rotate in. Gilbert was inconsistent in 2024, but there's optimism about Gilbert taking a step forward after he played banged up last year.

Two SEC Programs on ‘Commitment Watch' For Highly Touted Quarterback After Official Visits

Two SEC Programs on 'Commitment Watch' For Highly Touted Quarterback After Official Visits originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Celina, Texas, four-star quarterback Bowe Bentley has emerged as one of the nation's top prospects for the class of 2026, with LSU and Oklahoma battling it out for his commitment. Advertisement He's a 6-foot-2, 200-pound dual-threat quarterback and led Celina High School to a 16-0 record and a state championship in 2024, throwing for 3,211 yards, 47 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. He added 923 rushing yards along with 16 touchdowns on the ground. Bentley can spread the ball across the field with his strong arm and great accuracy. He brings mobility as well, giving him a dynamic advantage while under pressure. Bentley's rapid rise has seen him climb the rankings as he mulls a huge decision. According to 247Sports, he's the No. 78 ranked overall recruit and the seventh quarterback in the class. Advertisement It seems as if Bentley is getting closer to a decision. After his recent trips to Baton Rouge (May 31, 2025) and Norman (June 6-8, 2025), Bentley is officially on commitment watch. LSU appeals to the young quarterback because of its recent history of developing the position with recent Heisman winners Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow. The Tigers consistently bring elite skill position players to the program, which also makes them very enticing. On the other side, Oklahoma's offensive coordinator Ben Abruckle's fast-paced scheme saw Cam Ward have success just two years ago at Washington State. The Sooners' close proximity to his home state of Texas could also be a driving factor for his choice. As a decision gets closer, both programs are hopeful to land one of the best quarterbacks in next year's class. College World Series Preview: 3 things to know about Coastal Carolina

College World Series Preview: 3 things to know about Coastal Carolina The College World Series returns this week for the 75th anniversary of the CWS in Omaha. LSU baseball is headed to Omaha for the 20th time in program history. The Tigers will be joined by seven other programs looking to make a run at the national title. Just about every pocket of the country is represented in the field of eight. There's a heavy West Coast presence with Arizona, Oregon State, and UCLA. LSU and Arkansas represent the boot, while Murray State and Louisville represent Kentucky. From the Southeast, we have Coastal Carolina. We have a fresh field as none of these teams were in Omaha last year. A few schools are chasing their first national championship while programs like LSU and Arizona look to add to a large trophy case. Ahead of the CWS, we'll examine all eight teams. With only two SEC teams in the field, LSU fans are likely unfamiliar with most of these squads. Here are three things to know about Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers are riding a 23-game win streak Coastal Carolina is the hottest team in college baseball right now. The Chanticleers' last loss came on April 22 at The College of Charleston. Since then, Coastal Carolina has notched four sweeps and won the Sun Belt Tournament. There are always questions about how teams like Coastal will fare against power conference competition, but CCU quieted those concerns. The win streak includes a victory over Clemson and a sweep of Auburn in the super regional. This team has the talent to hang with the top squads in college baseball. According to the Massey Ratings, Coastal Carolina is the fourth-best team in the sport. They're far from a sleeper in Omaha. Led Sun Belt in stolen bases and fielding percentage The little things can be the difference in June baseball. Coastal Carolina led the Sun Belt in stolen bases and fielding percentage. The Chanticleers can create extra runs on offense and know how to keep them off the board on defense. Sebastian Alexander is one of the top runners in the country with 27 steals on the year. Wells Sykes can run too, with 17 steals to his name. CCU has a strong defense behind the plate as well, with First-Team All-Sun Belt catcher Caden Bodine. Pitching staff is deep The only pitching staff in Omaha that can rival Coastal Carolina from a depth standpoint is Arkansas, and the Razorbacks are on the other side of the bracket. With a strong starting rotation and deep bullpen, the Chanticleers have the tools to fight out of the losers' bracket if they must. Jacob Morrison has been one of the top pitchers in the country all year. The big righty is 11-0 with a 2.15 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 96.1 innings pitched. Along with Morrison, you have Riley Eikhoff, who has a 2.90 ERA in 15 starts. It doesn't stop there as Cameron Flukey, 3.24 ERA in 91.2 innings, rounds out the rotation. Not many teams have three bonafide starters like that.

WATCH: Texans QB C.J. Stroud returns to practice, throwing during minicamp

Houston Texans fans can exhale a sigh of relief following the start of Tuesday's mandatory minicamp at the Methodist Training Center. Third-year Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud threw passes for the first time in almost a month during the opening of Tuesday's minicamp practice. He connected on several completions to Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins and rookie Jayden Higgins that caught the eye of reporters in practice. Advertisement Here's a look at several throws during the early stages of team drills. Stroud was kept from throwing during the Texans' OTA practices over the last two weeks because he was dealing with 'general soreness' in his throwing shoulder, according to head coach DeMeco Ryans. Both Ryans and first-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley said that they weren't concerned with Stroud missing reps and he'd be ready to go ahead of training camp. Stroud is in a pivotal year for the Texans after leading the franchise to back-to-back division titles. With a pair of losses in the divisional round, Houston spent the offeseason trying to revamp the offense and put the franchise quarterback in a better position to succeed. Advertisement While Stroud didn't throw during team drills, the fact that he was throwing at practice in general is a promising sign. Houston could elevate his reps on Wednesday's practice to close out minicamp with the media. The Texans open the regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7.
