AFL star brands TV reporter 'embarrassing' in cringeworthy interview after he was busted giving fans the middle finger

Jack Ginnivan branded a Seven News television reporter 'embarrassing' on Saturday, after the journalist appeared to press him on why he appeared to flip his middle finger up at Adelaide fans following Hawthorn's defeat to the Crows on Friday night. The Hawks have slumped to seventh in the AFL ladder following the 14-point loss at the Adelaide Oval. Despite the loss, Ginnivan, 22, enjoyed a standout performance, with the forward booting two goals while amassing 20 disposals. But appearing to be irate at his side's failure to seal the victory, the forward appeared to 'flip the bird' at several Crows fans as he made his way down the tunnel alongside his team-mates. He had appeared to be copping some sledges from spectators nearby to the entrance to the pitch. Ginnivan was unremorseful over the act, taking to Instagram to make an apparent reference to the inevitable fine he will receive from the AFL, which is likely to be around $1,000, ironically writing: 'Best coin spent.' Hawthorn star Jack Ginnivan has sniggered at questions when flying out of Adelaide after flipping the bird at Crows fans during the Hawks' 14-point loss. #7NEWS — 7NEWS Adelaide (@7NewsAdelaide) August 2, 2025 Jack Ginnivan (left) branded a Seven News TV reporter 'embarrassing' after the broadcaster approached him for an interview as the Hawthorn star made his way into the airport On Saturday, the young footy player found himself in the spotlight again, after he was approached by an AFL journalist and asked why he flipped his middle finger up at members of the crowd while he and his team walked into the airport. 'What was with the middle finger at Crows fans last night?' the reporter asked him. 'Are you a sore loser?' She continued to probe, before coaxing a response from the footballer. 'Do you think I'm going to speak to you,' the Hawthorn player replied, as he giggled to himself. 'Haven't you just?' the reporter said back, forcing another awkward laugh out of Ginnivan. 'Why are you laughing?' she added. 'Because you're embarrassing,' he said, as he continued to walk towards the entrance to the terminal. 'Imagine trying to stop me at an airport.' The 22-year-old later posted on Instagram next to vision of the incident, ironically writing: 'best coin spent' Ginnivan continued to laugh at the broadcaster, telling her that it was 'embarrassing' she was trying to talk to him while he walked into the airport terminal The persistent reporter followed him into the terminal building, but by this time, Ginnivan had had enough. 'Are you embarrassing giving the Crows fans the middle finger, given that they've won and you've lost?' The reporter asked again as the Hawks No 33 again. But this time he walked off, turning his back on the reporter. Ginnivan isn't the first player this season to land in hot water for flipping his middle finger at fans. Harley Reid copped a $1,000 fine earlier this year after he 'flipped the bird' at a group of Brisbane fans during the Eagles' defeat by the Lions in Round Two. Bailey Smith had also copped a $1,000 fine after he raised a double-finger salute to fans inside the Adelaide Oval following Geelong's win against the Crows in Round Five. On Friday night, Matthew Nicks' side outclassed their opponents, with Riley Thilthorpe booting four goals, while Taylor Walker and Izak Rankine both nabbed hat-tricks. Jordan Dawson was also a stand-out, booting a brace himself while managing a whopping 21 disposals and 12 tackles for the game.

Hawthorn star rushed to hospital for emergency surgery following clash with Port Adelaide

Hawks midfielder Finn Maginness was flown to hospital with a lacerated kidney following his side's victory over Port Adelaide on Saturday. The 24-year-old was experiencing unexplained pain in his abdomen following the match at University of Tasmania Stadium. He was transported to Launceston General Hospital, where it was soon determined he would need surgery at Royal Hobart Hospital to repair the laceration. Maginness will remain there for multiple days until he recovers, reports footy reporter Mitch Cleary. Hawks doctor Liam West delivered an update on Sunday. 'Finn's health is clearly our number one priority, and right now, the most important thing is that Finn is ok, is in the right place and he will recover fully,' West said. 'Finn will continue to spend this initial period of medical observation during his recovery in Hobart before any timeline for his return to play can be determined. 'We want to take this opportunity to thank the medical staff at LGH & the Royal Hobart for the fantastic care they have provided Finn.' The Hawks booted five goals to one in the last term in a 13.9 (87) to 7.7 (49) victory in atrocious conditions in Launceston. Hawthorn antagonist Jack Ginnivan iced the win in near-freezing conditions with the last goal of the game - and then made an aeroplane motion with his arms. The celebration followed Power coach Ken Hinkley being fined $20,000 for a similar reaction, plus verbal taunting, of Ginnivan and Hawk players after they lost last year's semi-final. 'Payback is deserved,' Hinkley later said. 'I have no problems with it and I am OK with it, I think it's good for the game, the theatre of the game. 'And good on Jack ... and Hawthorn themselves as a club. I won't be one that sits here and does anything but acknowledge that it was my turn today.' Hawk coach Sam Mitchell could also see the lighter side of the exchange. 'That is what you're going to get from Jack,'' he said. 'The banter between the clubs made a little bit more interest in the game. 'We finish the year one (win) each ... but it's good to get one back against Port because they have obviously caused us some pain and trauma, and all the Hawks fans some pain and trauma, over the last 12 months.'

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's China trip faces criticism from opposition over ‘indulgent' optics and lack of serious negotiations

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been criticised for "indulging" in optics as he snapped pictures with pandas and strolled the Great Wall of China on the final days of his diplomatic visit to People's Republic. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has engaged in panda diplomacy on the final day of his trip to China, but faces criticism for indulging in optics rather than serious statesmanship. The final leg of Mr Albanese's trip has been dominated by symbolic gestures as he visited the Chengdu Research Centre for Giant Panda Breeding on Thursday. He posed for cameras in a Hawthorn Hawks jacket and praised the role of panda diplomacy in fostering bilateral ties. 'They're very sensible, smart,' Mr Albanese told his guide after he was informed of how pandas 'get up early' and 'move around outside'. Reflecting on his encounter with Fu Ni—a giant panda that spent 15 years at Adelaide Zoo—Mr Albanese heaped praise on the Australia-China connection. 'It's a really strong connection that is there... And the visit here has been very warmly received,' Mr Albanese told Sky News. — Anthony Albanese (@AlboMP) July 17, 2025 However, the diplomatic visit has faced heavy criticism as Mr Albanese avoided broaching serious issues confronting the Australian and Chinese governments. This was despite his government's oft-repeated claim that 'we will disagree where we must and engage in the national interest'. Throughout the trip he avoided clashing with Chinese President Xi Jinping over the Darwin Port, China's support for Russia or recent military drills near Australian waters. Instead, Mr Albanese dined with President Xi, watched a Chinese rendition of Paul Kelly and Midnight Oil songs, and walked the Great Wall of China. The opposition condemned the approach, accusing Mr Albanese of indulging in nostalgia and failing to secure substantive outcomes. Shadow finance minister James Paterson told Sky News on Thursday the 'tangible outcomes' of the trip were 'very hard to identify'. 'I do wonder whether… a visit to Chengdu to pose with some pandas…. is strictly necessary as part of a six-day visit to China,' he said. 'There is so much else at stake in our other international relationships. Frankly, I have to say that some of this is starting to look a little bit indulgent.' He also criticised the prioritisation of symbolism over diplomacy after Mr Albanese traced Gough Whitlam's steps along the Great Wall of China from 1971. 'The appropriate time to do a nostalgic history tour of Labor Party mythology is after you retire, in your own time, at your own expense, not on the taxpayer dime.'
