OpenAI killed a ChatGPT feature that made some sensitive conversations publicly searchable.

Posted Jul 31, 2025 at 10:54 PM UTC OpenAI killed a ChatGPT feature that made some sensitive conversations publicly searchable. The search-engine-indexing feature recently went viral online — if you knew where to look, anyone on the internet could access public ChatGPT logs where people seemed to confess to crimes, share trade secrets, and more potentially damning scenarios. Dane Stuckey, OpenAI's CISO, shared in an X post Thursday that it will be removed starting Friday morning. Why AI researchers are getting paid like NBA All-Stars

Hello, and welcome to Decoder! This is Alex Heath, your Thursday episode guest host and deputy editor at The Verge. Today, I'm joined by Hayden Field, The Verge's senior AI reporter. We're talking about the AI talent wars and why some researchers are suddenly getting traded like they're NBA superstars. If you've been paying attention at all to the AI industry this past month, you've likely seen stories about the hiring frenzy that's been happening at Big Tech, research labs, and AI startups. Leading the charge is Mark Zuckerberg, who's been making some truly unprecedented job offers to try and lure top talent to Meta. But there's a whole lot more to this story. Hayden and I have been reporting on this for the past several weeks to get a sense of how big some of these offers really are, why companies like Google are opting to hire instead of acquire, and what it means that some of the most sought-after AI experts in the world are no longer motivated by money alone. The Verge hires Hayden Field as senior AI reporter

Hayden Field is joining The Verge as a senior AI reporter, where she will lead coverage of the biggest names in AI — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Apple, and others — while also reporting on how these tools are being used, how they're reshaping society, and how regulators are responding. Field joins The Verge from CNBC, where she closely tracked the rise of generative AI and the companies determining its future. She begins her role today. 'AI has the potential to be a fundamental shift in how we interact with technology and what we think computers can do,' said Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief of The Verge. 'Hayden's reporting has consistently delivered insightful coverage of AI's most pressing developments, and her deep sourcing and sharp analysis will be vital as The Verge continues to expand its AI coverage.' During her time at CNBC, Field reported on a wide array of topics, from corporate developments and regulatory scrutiny to ethical considerations and technological advancements. She's covered Elon Musk's xAI and its ambitious plans to raise billions to build a massive AI infrastructure powered by Nvidia hardware, analyzed the FTC's inquiry into major AI firms like OpenAI, Amazon, and Microsoft, and investigated internal challenges at OpenAI, including employee concerns over equity donations amid the company's soaring valuation.

Anthropic closes $2.5B credit facility, CNBC reports

Earlier this week, Anthropic received a $2.5B, five-year revolving credit line to amp up its liquidity in an ever-expanding – and expensive – competition in the artificial intelligence industry, CNBC's Hayden Field reports. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI research executives, launched its Claude chatbot in March 2023. The company closed its latest funding round in March at a $61.5B valuation, and the new credit facility adds to that, the author notes. The generative AI market is poised to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade. Companies from Google (GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN) to Anthropic and Perplexity are racing to announce new products and features, especially as the race to build 'AI agents' intensifies. Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI announced similar news in October, when CNBC reported it had received a $4B revolving line of credit.
