US border towns crushed by Canadian boycott over Trump's trade war: report

Enraged Canadians are boycotting American goods in the face of President Trump's trade war – and small US businesses along the northern border are feeling the brunt of the financial pain, according to a report. Trump's 25% tariff on Canadian imports and threats to annex the nation have shut the spigot of regular visits over the border to patronize US restaurants and grocery stores, Bloomberg reported. Border crossings from Canada into the US plunged more than 22% in March compared to the year before, according to US Customs and Border Protection data. AP The sparsely-populated Washington state town of Point Roberts is among those that are suffering. Located about 20 miles south of Vancouver at the bottom of a peninsula, Point Roberts is surrounded by water on three sides with its sole land access through Canada – making it heavily dependent on sales to Canadians. Advertisement 'We do not survive without Canada. We just don't,' Ali Hayton, owner of the main grocery store in Point Roberts, said during a roundtable meeting about the crisis. Some stores in the town use cash registers with two drawers, with one for Canadian dollars and one for the US, while other businesses have slashed their exchange rates in an attempt to win over customers, according to Bloomberg. At the Peace Arch, located near Point Roberts in Blaine, Wash., Canadian southbound traffic is down 52% in the first two weeks of April compared to last year. Hayton said sales at her grocery store are down 30% compared to this time last year, forcing her to slash stock orders and lower her exchange rate. Advertisement Some of the Canadian visitors who have continued to shop at her store end up shocked by the hefty tariff at the border, and turn around to return the products, she said. 3 President Trump's 25% tariffs on Canadian imports and threats to annex the nation have angered residents. AP Now, she's worried about whether she'll be able to keep her 17 employees on the payroll, since 80% of her business comes from Canadian travelers during the summer, she added. 'There's a lot of people that are saying, 'Why don't we just give Point Roberts to Canada?'' Hayton said. 'I feel like most of the people in Point Roberts really just feel like we are alone in this.' Advertisement Bill Becht, who owns an antique store in nearby Blaine and voted for Trump, said he thinks the president's threats to take over Canada are just talk – but 'you can feel' the loss of Canadian customers. Several parcel delivery stores flourish in Point Roberts, since Canadians who are unable to get items delivered to Canada will send them to the parcel delivery location in the US and drive over to pick up the packages. 3 Canadian and American flags flying outside a restaurant in Point Roberts, Wash. AP At least one of these stores has already closed after its business tumbled 75% in March from the year before, according to the report. The loss of business is reminiscent of that suffered during border closing because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But at least then Americans could lean on government loans and stimulus, residents told Bloomberg. Tamra Hansen, a dual citizen from British Columbia who owns two restaurants in Point Roberts, said her businesses are in jeopardy. 'It's like a mining town,' she told Bloomberg. 'And when the mine shuts down, what happens to that town?' Advertisement These towns are seeing significant drops in sales tax revenue – enough to put city staffers at risk of furlough, according to Blaine Mayor Mary Lou Stewar. Washington is one of the most trade-dependent states in the US, as the country's top producer of apples, blueberries, hops, pears and sweet cherries, according to the report.

Karel Vejmelka, Utah shut down Flames

April 2 - Barrett Hayton's early second-period goal held up as the winner thanks to stellar goaltending by Karel Vejmelka as the host Utah Hockey Club held on for a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Kevin Stenlund and Clayton Keller also scored for Utah (34-29-12, 80 points), which has won two straight. The hero, however, was Vejmelka, who made 11 of his 33 saves in the third period while the Flames frantically pushed for the equalizer and controlled the play. Vejmelka, who made his 18th consecutive start between the pipes, loomed especially large with saves on Blake Coleman and Matt Coronato on successive chances early in the third period and then against Joel Farabee when the Flames were on the power play. Rasmus Andersson replied for the Flames (35-27-12, 82 points), whose playoff hopes took a huge hit. Dustin Wolf stopped 25 shots. The Flames are six points behind the Minnesota Wild for the Western Conference's second wild-card spot. Calgary has eight games remaining, one more than the Wild. Utah is eight points behind the Wild, with seven games remaining. Utah won all three meetings with the Flames this season. Amidst a low-event first period, Stenlund opened the scoring at the 17:46 mark, blasting home a one-timer from the slot, where he sneaked in unnoticed and took a slick pass from Alex Kerfoot. Hayton doubled the lead in a wild turn of events in the second period. The Flames appeared score, but video review ruled the puck had not completely crossed the line. Once play resumed, Hayton slipped a backhand through Wolf's legs to make it a 2-0 game at 2:25. Andersson provided the Flames a sorely needed boost when he finally put them on the board at the 13:00 mark of the second period. His long point shot made it through the screen and inside the far post. Calgary came close to tying the clash, but all hopes were dashed when Keller netted an empty-net goal with 18 seconds remaining.

Confident slapper Keira Hayton keeps using her speed while batting third for West Aurora. ‘It's gonna go well.'

Keira Hayton feels the need for speed, even if she happens to be slotted into a traditional power spot by batting third in West Aurora's lineup. The 5-foot-4 senior, who signed in February with Missouri-St. Louis, has a game based on speed as she patrols center field for coach Randy Hayslett. Hayslett has three speedsters at the top of his batting order, led by senior shortstop Sara Tarr and followed by strong slappers in sophomore left fielder Gracie Del Toro and Hayton. 'When it's working, it's gonna go well,' Hayton said. 'We have a lot of new people this year and a lot of younger girls. 'I think having Sara, Gracie and me at the top, when we all do our jobs, it will get us going good and give us a good start.' The jury is still out following Tuesday's 13-4 loss to Riverside-Brookfield in Aurora in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover, primarily because of the small sample size. On the plus side, the trio accounted for four of the six hits and three of the runs scored by the Blackhawks (0-2). Two starters had to leave mid-game for a National Honor Society induction and three missed last week's season-opening 9-6 loss to Waubonsie Valley for a school field trip. And pitching, of course, will be just as big in the team's development. Hayslett used three Tuesday — freshman Bella Celeste Doyle and sophomores Ally Lambert and Aminah Leverence. 'Even if one of us three hits a single, the next pitch we're gonna likely be on second,' Hayton said. 'We're all hustling, moving around the bases. That's a good top three right there. I enjoy it.' The trio combined for 39 steals last season — Tarr with 23, Hayton 11 and Del Toro five. On Tuesday, the Blackhawks went 7-for-7 on steals as Tarr and Del Toro recorded two apiece. Hayton, sophomore right fielder Anna Tarr and sophomore infielder Balla Marzullo each had one. Sara Tarr hit a two-run homer, her second of the season, and Marzullo added a two-run single. 'Coach wants me hitting leadoff to get the most at bats,' said Tarr, an Ohio State recruit in her fourth year as a varsity starter. 'I've been batting leadoff every year I've played here. He wanted Keira behind Gracie because Keira is not just a slapper. She can power hit. 'And if Gracie and I are on base, Keira can place the ball. It helps us more with runners on.' Del Toro has made the biggest move after batting ninth last season. 'I was always on the bottom of the order,' Del Toro said. 'It was me and then Sara at leadoff. I had a hint at the end of the year we'd do this and I'd move up. It makes the top of our order very strong. 'I think it's likely that one of us three, if not two or all three, will get on base. Once we do, I remember Keira saying, 'We'll go around the bases. We all have good speed and are able to steal.' Having Anna (Tarr) in right let's us cover a lot of ground, too.' Hayton, who hit .340 last season and earned third team all-state honors, should be able to improve upon her 16 RBIs. 'At first, when I saw I was hitting third, I was like, 'Whoa, boy, I'm no cleanup hitter,'' said Hayton, who has warmed up to the task. 'I make jokes about it, but it will depend on the game situation. 'I'm definitely still more of a slapper, though.' Hayton did a lot of the legwork, along with help from older sister Kaylee, in finding her spot with Missouri-St. Louis. Kaylee, a 2014 West Aurora alum who pitched for both North Central College and Aurora University, teaches young pitchers. She reached out this winter to the coaches after Missouri-St. Louis signed Huntley catcher/shortstop Madison Rozanski. Sophomore May Pasqualini, an Oswego East graduate whose dad Mark coaches Aurora Central Catholic, also plays for Missouri-St. Louis. 'I'm really excited and can't wait to get started,' Keira said.
