Wicked Director And Deadpool Writers Join Split Fiction Movie
A live-action movie adaptation of Split Fiction, EA and Hazelight's recently released hit co-op game, is moving forward according to new report claiming that the director of Wicked is set to helm the film. It's also reported that Sydney Sweeney will star in the adaptation that is being written by the team behind Deadpool & Wolverine. On March 21, Variety first reported that there was a bidding war in Hollywood over the live-action movie rights to EA's Split Fiction. The game was a massive hit for EA, at one point reaching over 250,000 concurrent players on Steam and selling 2+ million copies in its first week. Split Fiction also received rave reviews from critics. Production company Story Kitchen is reportedly helping EA and Hazelight develop the film. And now we reportedly know who is directing, writing, and starring in the adaptation. On Thursday, Variety reported that Sydney Sweeny (Euphoria) is set to star in the Split Fiction movie. It's unknown which of the two main characters—Zoe or Mio—she will play. The outlet also reported that the upcoming adaptation will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who previously directed Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked. The outlet also claims that its sources say the movie's screenplay will be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the same duo behind last year's mega-blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Sweeney is reportedly going to be an executive producer on the movie, too. Story Kitchen has quickly become a big player in the video game adaptation business in Hollywood. The production company helped get the live-action Sonic movies off the ground, as well as the animated Tomb Raider series on Netflix. The company is also developing a Streets of Rage movie and a film based on It Takes Two, which was also developed by Hazelight and published by EA. However, that project (like so many other video game movies) seems to have stalled at Amazon, while Split Fiction is moving along extremely quickly. . Sydney Sweeney Boards Adaptation Of 2025's Potential GOTY, ‘Split/Fiction'
TORONTO, ONTARIO - SEPTEMBER 08: Sydney Sweeney receives the IMDb "Fan Favorite" STARmeter Award at ... More The Getty Images Portrait Studio Presented by IMDb And IMDbPro at InterContinental Toronto Centre on September 08, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario. (Photo byfor IMDb) Things either move very fast or very slow in Hollywood, and while it may take a decade to get an Uncharted movie made, it has taken less than two months for 2025's Split/Fiction to land a huge star and huge director for its movie adaptation. One the most popular names in Hollywood right now, if not the most, would be Sydney Sweeney who is now on board the Split/Fiction movie as one of the two leads, though it's not confirmed which one that will be yet (I mean, the blonde one, probably). This is a month after it was reported she was 'circling' starring in a Gundam move, but the Split/Fiction outing seems like a done deal. Oh, and Sweeney was just said to be attached to another game adaptation, producing an OutRun movie directed by Michael Bay about an old, relatively obscure racing game. It hasn't been said that she'll star, however. Split Fiction But just as impressive as Sweeney starring is the fact that the movie will be directed by Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked fame, where this seems like it would probably be his next movie after Wicked Part 2 was released. Why is this movie getting so much attention, and a movie spooling up this quickly? Well its studio, Hazelight, won Game of the Year in 2021 for It Takes Two, a co-operative story game. Split/Fiction is another co-operative story game, and is currently tied with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as the best-reviewed game of 2025 with a 92 Metascore, putting it easily in GOTY contention. Clair Obscur is tough competition and Grand Theft Auto 6 may come out this year, but it's not impossible it could win, and these reviews have been stellar. It's no secret that Hollywood has been jumping on video games left and right for movie or show adaptations with massive hits like Fallout, The Last of Us, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and now Minecraft. Split/Fiction may not be as high profile as those, but if you've played the game, which blends sci-fi and fantasy worlds in an awesome way, you can see how it would make a good film. You can also see how it would probably make a very, very expensive film. There's no release date for this as this is all still coming together. But with a big star and director, this is going to speed along pretty quickly, it seems. Sydney Sweeney to Star in "Split Fiction" Film Adaptation
Yara Sameh Sydney Sweeney is set to star in a film adaptation of the hit video game ' Split Fiction '. Jon M. Chu is directing the movie from a script being written by 'Deadpool & Wolverine' screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The adaptation will be produced by Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson's Story Kitchen (formerly dj2 Entertainment), which is taking out the talent package now to studios, and Chu's Electric Somewhere. Sweeney is set to executive produce. From developer Hazelight Studios and publisher Electronic Arts, 'Split Fiction' blends fantasy and science fiction, following a pair of authors, Mio and Zoe, who become trapped in the worlds they wrote. Written by director and Hazelight studio chief Josef Fares and Sebastian Johansson, 'Split Fiction' is a co-op adventure game that features gameplay mechanics involving split-screen combat, platforming challenges and differing abilities for each character. Sources say it has yet to be decided which lead role Sweeney will be playing: Zoe or Mio. Released on March 6, the game quickly became a hit with players and critics alike, receiving positive reviews and massive sales. According to Hazelight, the game sold more than two million copies in the first week following its launch, and that number continues to rise at a rapid clip. The 'Split Fiction' film was being developed and attracting top Hollywood studios for a bidding war, during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco in March. The package is shepherded by Goldberg and Johnson's Story Kitchen, which is one of the hottest players in the video game-to-screen biz right now, with credits including the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' films, the 'Tomb Raider' franchise (with a new animated series that premiered on Netflix in October 2024), the upcoming 'Streets of Rage' adaptation set up at Lionsgate, as well as films based on 'It Takes Two' (from the game studio behind 'Split Fiction') and 'ToeJam & Earl' at Amazon MGM Studios. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Split Fiction and the best co-op games to play with a partner in 2025
These days, multiplayer gaming means connecting to the internet and playing with friends and strangers worldwide. However, that hasn't always been the case. Multiplayer gaming once meant being squeezed on a couch at your best friend's house, each with a controller in hand, likely for an unreasonable amount of time. The two types of multiplayer gaming have different names, with the "in real life" style being called co-op gaming, while the newer iteration is dubbed online multiplayer gaming. As more games have relied on online gaming, co-op gaming has been picked up once again by indie studios to create a fun, fulfilling experience. Last week, a new co-op game was released that has been scoring high with gamers and reviewers, with many saying it could be the best game of the year. Here, we look at that game and other co-op games worth picking up in 2025 to play with friends and loved ones. With its release, Swedish game design studio Hazelight has become the expert on co-op games. Under the guidance of Lebanese-Swedish director Josef Fares, the studio has produced some of the best experiences in the genre. Their latest game, Split Fiction, is about two writers – one penning a sci-fi and the second writing a fantasy – who both get sucked into virtually constructed versions of the stories they wrote. In Split Fiction, players take control of one of the two characters and attempt to survive as they are flung from one story to another. Each segment of the game is a homage to something from gaming, film or literature, which presents a wonderfully complete experience when brought together. Many who played the game have praised it, including pop star Abel Tesfaye (formerly known as The Weeknd) who posted on X: 'Split Fiction might be game of the year so far". The first of Hazelight's successes with co-op gaming was A Way Out, a game in which two inmates must work together to escape their prison sentence. The game requires a level of coordination and understanding between the players in order to traverse levels. The game also features several minigames such as Connect Four, darts, horseshoes, spearfishing, wheelchair wheelies and exercises such as chin-ups, dips, push-ups, sit-ups and bench presses. While Hazelight and Fares would perfect the formula with their later games, It Takes Two and Split Fiction, A Way Out shows all the many ways they experimented in making the experience as fun as it could be. Hazelight's second success in the genre was the winner of Game of the Year at the 2021 Game Awards. It Takes Two also won Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer Game at the same ceremony, showing just how well received it was. In the game, two people going through a divorce are transformed into two small beings that must navigate their barn and all the inanimate objects that have suddenly sprung to life, creating obstacles for them to overcome. It Takes Two was praised for its fantastic and fresh approach to co-op gaming, but more importantly, for its honest way of presenting the difficulties of communication in a relationship. The couple in the game love one another but have experienced issues that made them grow apart. During the game, they speak openly about why they grew apart, allowing insight into what it takes to keep a loving relationship healthy. Running a kitchen between two people is already an arduous task – who cooks, who cleans, who delivers the food to the counter? In Overcooked 2, these responsibilities must be shared and divided smartly. But it doesn't end there. The game doesn't just up the ante with more orders or more complex recipes, it also creates havoc with moving platforms, earthquakes and meteor showers. It can get messy, in more ways than one. Relationships are tested and stretched when playing Overcooked 2. All you need to imagine is the heated temperament of chef Gordon Ramsey, multiply that by two, and you'll get an idea of the experience playing this game. It's also extremely fun. Less stressful than running a kitchen is the process of moving out of a house ... right? In Moving Out 2, two players run a furniture moving company. Jobs are allotted not only in the local town but also across space and time. The concept might sound dreary; what's fun about moving furniture from inside the house to a truck? Well, the furniture could become unruly. The floors could start moving. A large item might need to be catapulted through the window. There are arguments to be had still, and methods of extracting an item will be ridiculed if not outright refused, but there will be a massive sense of accomplishment once all the furniture is moved out successfully.
