Egypt seeks ICAO Council seat, backs African aviation integration
CAIRO – 30 May 2025: Egypt supports a stronger African voice in global aviation and seeks a seat on the ICAO Council, Civil Aviation Minister Sameh Hefny said during AFI Aviation Week 2025 in Zimbabwe. He emphasized Egypt's commitment to regional integration and sustainable development, highlighting efforts to boost the African Single Air Transport Market and open skies initiatives. Hefny held talks with African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) leaders to deepen cooperation and secure backing for Egypt's ICAO candidacy ahead of elections in September. AFCAC officials voiced support, citing Egypt's infrastructure and regulatory contributions to African aviation. A seat on the ICAO Council represents membership in the governing body of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is responsible for setting standards and guidelines for international civil aviation. The ICAO Council is composed of 36 member states elected by the ICAO Assembly. These member states represent various regions and have a significant role in shaping aviation policies and practices worldwide.

OPEN// Egypt backs DRC nomination for UNSC non-permanent seat
CAIRO, May 23 (MENA) - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Abu Bakr Hefny said Egypt supports the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) nomination for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC) for 2026-2027. Hefny made the remarks during his participation in a ceremony held by the Congolese Embassy in Cairo, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday. In his speech, the Egyptian diplomat expressed confidence in the DRC ability to represent the interests of African states and defend their issues within the UN Security Council. Hefny highlighted the role of African countries in strengthening partnerships with the UN, especially with regard to peacekeeping and peacebuilding, underlining the importance of continuing to reform the UN Security Council in a way that serves the African continent's interests. OPEN// Deputy foreign minister inaugurates training to support maritime security in Red Sea
CAIRO, March 10 (MENA) - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates ambassador Abou baker Hefny opened Monday a training program to support maritime security in the Red Sea region. The program is organized by the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) with the support of the Japanese government, under the rubric "Combating Transboundary Threats: Towards Enhancing Maritime Security in the Red Sea Region" for a number of civilian and security cadres concerned with the countries bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, including Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Sudan, Somalia, Jordan and Egypt. In a keynote speech before the opening ceremony, the deputy foreign minister referred to repercussions of the Israeli aggression on Gaza on the stability of the Red Sea region and the unprecedented escalation of tension in the area. Hefny said preserving the security of the Red Sea and freedom of navigation is a collective responsibility that requires intensive international and regional cooperation. Egypt always accentuates the necessity of integrating Arab and African countries bordering the Red and the Gulf of Aden in all regional initiatives, he said. The deputy foreign minister stressed the importance of activating the Council of Arab and African States Bordering the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden; being a necessary regional framework to enhance cooperation and coordination between member states. Hefny said the security of the Red Sea is closely related to the crises witnessed by the region, underlining the importance of reaching a just solution to the Yemeni crisis and working to consolidate ceasefire in Gaza, in addition to settling the Sudanese crisis. For his part, Director General of the CCCPA ambassador Seif Kandil pointed out that the program focuses on several dimensions, including supporting frameworks for enhancing regional and international cooperation through coordinating efforts between coastal states, in addition to addressing legal frameworks to ensure a safe marine environment, along with means to confront challenges of cybercrimes, stressing the Center's keenness - since 2017 - on addressing issues related to Red Sea security and ways to enhance cooperation between the countries of the region. Successive editions of Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development have addressed importance of focusing on activating the comprehensive approach to peace, security and development, said the CCCPA director general. The Japanese chargé d' affaires also delivered a speech voicing his country's pride in the partnership with the CCCPA since 2008, pointing out to the importance of the security of the Red Sea and freedom of navigation. He also said the Red Sea region is part of the Japanese vision related to the formation of the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" (FOIP), praising the role of the Center as an important partner in the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process. Egypt to finalize airport management deal with private sector by mid-March
Arab Finance: The Egyptian government expects to finalize an agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) before mid-March to offer the management of 11 airports to the private sector, Egyptian Minister of Aviation Sameh Hefny announced in press conference. Hefny stated that the first phase of the plan will begin with Hurghada Airport, followed by Sphinx Airport. He also revealed that leading international firms, including the three largest airport operators in Europe, have expressed interest in managing Egyptian airports. Aviation min. discusses industry challenges at 'WGS' high-level panel discussion in Dubai
Carbon mission - file CAIRO - 15 February 2025: Egyptian Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El Hefny said the civil aviation industry is facing major challenges, including climate change, which calls for cutting carbon emissions, enhancing infrastructure, and raising the skills of human cadres in this vital industry to keep pace with the rapid growth in global air traffic. The minister made the remarks while participating in a high-level panel discussion on how to address civil aviation challenges and enhance the industry's sustainability. The session was held on the margins of the 12th edition of the World Governments Summit (WGS), which took place in Dubai on February 11-13 under the theme: "Shaping Future Governments." Asserting the importance of boosting public-private partnerships to achieve the sustainable development goals in the aviation sector, Hefny said the ministry is currently working on developing comprehensive strategies to ensure continued growth and sustainability. He said his ministry's participation in the global event demonstrates its interest in broadening prospects of international cooperation and sharing relevant experiences. A great host of global civil aviation leaders participated in the discussion, including President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council Salvatore Sciachitano, ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, ministers of transport and civil aviation from various countries, heads of civil aviation authorities, and representatives of relevant international organizations. The summit explored major global transformations and their associated opportunities and challenges across various sectors.
