Peaky Blinders auction of original costumes raises £19k for cancer charity
An auction of original costumes from BBC TV series Peaky Blinders, including a suit worn by actor Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby in the show's final scenes, has raised £19,000 for charity. The 48-year-old Irish actor wore the period-style grey three-piece suit in the final episode of the sixth series. The suit, which came with a handwritten note on a piece of script found in a pocket which says: 'takes off ring', sold for £1,650. The highest price of £3,000 was fetched by a three-piece woollen suit, also worn by Murphy as Tommy Shelby, which comes with a label reading 'Tommy suit C'. A hat worn by Sam Claflin, who played fascist MP Oswald Mosley during series five and six, sold for £180, and a coat worn by the late Helen McCrory as Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in episode four of series three sold for £650. Other auctioned costumes and accessories included Tommy Shelby's wedding suit in episode one of the third season, which sold for £1,600, an embroidered jacket worn by Aimee Ffion Edwards as Esme Shelby in season six, sold for £240, as well as hats, dresses, ties, and shoes from the hit show. The Omega Auctions sale ran for four weeks from April 22. It concluded on May 20 with a themed event held at the Peaky Blinders bar on Peter Street in Manchester, featuring costume displays and live bidding. All proceeds from the auction have gone to The Christie Charity, which supports cancer patients and research at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. Oscar-winner Murphy is set to reprise his role as Birmingham gangster Shelby in a film set after the final season of the show, which ran from 2013 to 2022. Across six series, Peaky Blinders tackled the rise of fascism, Irish republican politics, and communist activities through the period following the First World War, along with Shelby's political ambitions. The sequel movie written by the show's creator and screenwriter Steven Knight is due for release this autumn.

The actor, 54, and the rocker, 46, looked as loved-up than ever as they posed for snaps inside the starry venue. For the occasion, Damian cut an edgy figure in an all-black ensemble consisting of a black leather jacket layered over a shirt and smart trousers. He teamed the look with black leather loafers as he sweetly cuddled up to Alison, who he found love with in 2022 after the tragic death of his wife Helen McCrory. Damian and Alison have been dating for two years, after they were first spotted together in the summer of 2022. Romance blossomed a year after Damian's wife of 14 years, actress Helen, tragically passed away in April 2021 aged 52 after a secret battle with breast cancer. Shortly after Helen's death, Damian wrote a heartbreaking tribute to his late wife in The Times where he revealed she wanted him to find love again - joking his children said their mother 'wanted daddy to have lots of girlfriends'. Last month, Damian poignantly opened up on how he handles grief after Helen's passing. The Homeland actor said: 'There's a well-known psychological state in grief, or post any sort of trauma, which is called the manic defence.' He continued: 'I have the manic defence in a very pronounced way, which is that you affirm life. 'So in amongst the inevitable days of being in a heap on the floor bawling your eyes out, there is your manic defence, which is like, 'Come on, live life, move forward, and reaffirm life'. Damian, who has two teenage children - Manon, 18, and Gulliver, 16 - with Helen, added: 'Life is there for the taking, to be lived. 'Especially when you have two children – making sure they have a sense that everything is not over.' Damian recently made a rare public appearance with his kids Manon and Gulliver as they attended the Burberry LFW show. In April, Damian looked ever the proud father as he wrapped his arms around his children. He spoke about the qualities his children inherited from their mother in a sweet tribute in The Times, as he opened up on the absence Helen's death had left in their lives. Peaky Blinders actress Helen died from breast cancer in April 2021 aged just 52, having kept her diagnosis a secret as she continued to work (pictured with Damian in 2020) He said: 'She's left our beautiful children, Manon and Gully, too early, but they have been prepared for life. 'They have in them the fearlessness, wit, curiosity, talent and beauty of their mother. She has exhorted us to be courageous and not afraid. 'As she said repeatedly to the children, "Don't be sad, because even though I'm about to snuff it, I've lived the life I wanted to".' Their fashion week outing comes after Damian revealed what life is really like with his 'noisy family' and the one mistake he thinks he made with his children. He opened up about his very private family life to Nick Grimshaw and Angela Harnett on an episode of their podcast Dish in October, telling them that while the family all get on very well, he is no longer allowed to cook for his daughter.

The weekend festival celebrates the written and spoken word with an exciting Welsh and English language line-up held across the town. The actor encouraged social media users to attend the event, which is happening this weekend, Friday, April 25, to Sunday, April 27, and to enjoy the Welsh writers and musicians gathering in Llandeilo town centre over the three days. In the video posted to Llandeilo Literary Festival's social media, he starts by saying: "Hi, it's Damian Lewis here. His father is 100% Welsh and his paternal grandparents were Welsh too, in fact he says he considers himself "London Welsh". And although I went to school in England, grew up in London, we've always been made aware of Welsh roots by dad, who's been very keen to stay in touch with his Welshness, even though he can't speak more than five words of Welsh… It's 'London Welsh', I guess!'
