Odisha Revenue Clerks' Association stages protest over hike in pay

BARIPADA: The Odisha Revenue Clerks' Association in Mayurbhanj district has launched an indefinite strike from Monday over its 10-point charter of demands in front of the collector's office in Baripada. Their demands include raising the basic pay of district-level revenue clerks to Level-9 under ORSP-2017 rules, creating new posts and restructuring the system based on data submitted by district collectors, granting 100 per cent promotion opportunities within the Odisha Revenue Service cadre, providing skill enhancement training to new revenue assistants, and replacing the New Pension Scheme with the Old Pension Scheme. The association accused the state government of delaying the fulfillment of their long-pending demands and showing a 'step-motherly attitude' towards district-level revenue clerks. It said that it had earlier sent multiple representations to the government, held discussions at various levels, and met officials through different channels. When no concrete action was taken, clerks had resorted to wearing black badges while on duty as a symbolic protest. With no response from the government, the association began a complete work stoppage from Monday. They have warned the strike will continue, with peaceful protests, until all demands are met. They submitted a memorandum to Mayurbhanj collector Hemakanta Say, who assured that he would look into the matter.

Tribal students of Mayurbhanj protest delay in scholarship

BARIPADA: Hundreds of tribal students on Wednesday staged protest in front of the Mayurbhanj collector's office here on Wednesday demanding immediate disbursement of post-matric scholarship (PMS) for the academic year 2024-25. The agitators alleged that a significant number of eligible students are yet to receive the scholarship which is crucial for covering tuition fees, hostel expenses, and other academic costs. They said students from economically-weaker background are unable to pay the tuition, hostel accommodation and examination fees. This has resulted in schools withholding admit cards of many students, restricting their access to classes, and delay in academic results. Terming their protest as peaceful and apolitical, the students appealed to the district administration to act urgently and ensure timely disbursal of the scholarship amount. Later in the day, the agitating students met Mayurbhanj collector Hemakanta Say and urged him to resolve the issue at the earliest. The collector reportedly assured them that the matter would be addressed within three days, following which they called off the protest.

Tribals meet Mayurbhanj collector over land grabbing

BARIPADA: A group of tribal residents from Keshdiha village in Thakurmunda block of Mayurbhanj district recently met collector Hemakanta Say, seeking justice over land allegedly encroached by another group. Villagers said around 300 families, both tribal and non-tribal have been residing in Keshdiha on the foothills of Similipal for generations and sustained themselves through agriculture and forest produce collection. While some families have received land pattas from the Revenue department, others are yet to receive it despite cultivating these lands since their forefathers' time, said the villagers. However, people residing on the other side of the forest have reportedly occupied their land, claiming ownership. Despite the administration's awareness of the situation, no solution has been reached, leading to conflicts between the two groups. The villagers alleged that local police have unfairly targeted them instead of protecting their rights as permanent residents, which has disrupted their livelihood and family sustenance. They said that attempts by revenue inspector and other officials to visit the village for resolution have been met with protests from the encroachers. Some families have been prohibited from using their lands for agricultural purposes as the land is located in forest area, severely impacting their income any employment opportunity, many families now survive only on rations received through BPL cards, which are insufficient to meet their monthly needs. 'We are deprived of our rights. We pray the district authority to look into the matter,' said the villagers. Mayurbhanj collector Hemakanta Say assured to look into the matter.
