Kirk Herbstreit ‘not a fan' of open fandom from ESPN colleague Elle Duncan — who claps back at him

Elle Duncan didn't appreciate catching a stray from her ESPN colleague earlier this week. During a podcast appearance on 'Net Positive with John Crist,' 'College Gameday' panelist Kirk Herbstreit sounded off on sports broadcasters who can't hide their fandom, mentioning Duncan, who is a die-hard Georgia Bulldogs fan, as an example of what not to do behind the mic. 'If you are a personality, like a Bill Simmons, or a Pat McAfee or a Stephen A. Smith… part of their schtick is kind of that… That's why Ohio State fans probably don't care for me, I treat Ohio State like any other team,' Herbstreit said during the interview. Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images 'It might be different if you're in the studio, but if you're calling games and let's say you're an Alabama fan — and I'm calling an Ohio State-Alabama game — how the hell can you take what I say seriously if I'm saying, 'We, almost caught…' I would never do that. I don't think you can cheer when you do games on a national level… You watch 'SportsCenter' and Elle Duncan is sitting there cheering for Georgia, openly cheering. I'm not a fan of that personally. I think it hurts your credibility…' Duncan, who has been a 'SportsCenter' anchor since 2016, was seemingly caught off guard by Herbstreit's comments. Advertisement 'Didn't have this on my bingo card for today but my fandom doesn't impact in any way what or how we talk about teams on air. Ever. I… Also **whispers** I'm not the only one. So why I get singled out?' Duncan wrote on X on Friday. Elle Duncan is seen leaving her hotel on the way to the Disney Upfronts 2025 on May 13, 2025 in New York City. GC Images Despite his views on objectivity in sports media, Herbstreit admitted that he got emotional after his alma mater, Ohio State, won the football national championship in January. Advertisement 'Don't start with me,' Herbstreit said when Scott Van Pelt asked him a question on 'SportsCenter' after the Buckeyes' win over Notre Dame. 'I'm a little emotional. I'm just fired up for these guys. When I call these games, I'm incredibly objective. I love all of these Ohio State teams, but this team, because of what they went through to get to this point, you're just happy.' Herbstreit has also recently been defensive over Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and the football program, which has previously struggled to get over the hump on the big stage.

Kirk Herbstreit reacts to Lee Corso's last GameDay being at Ohio State

Perfect setting for one last ride!Coach's 'First Love' as he says!! If you've tuned into ESPN's College GameDay through the years, there's one thing that has become pretty apparent. Former Ohio State quarterback and current GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit has a very good relationship with host Lee Corso. The two have a chemistry and mutual regard for each other that has gone on for almost three decades. In fact, when Corso has been absent from the show for health reasons, Herbstreit has always been right there wishing his friend well and expressing his gratitude for what he means to him and college football. So it will be with great respect and reflection that Herbstreit and the rest of the College GameDay crew pay tribute to Corso when the show hits Columbus for the massive collision between Texas and Ohio State on Aug. 30. It's the same location that Corso started the headgear tradition by donning the Brutus head in a game between OSU and Penn State on Oct. 5, 1996. But not everyone is happy about it. Dan Corso, Lee's son, expressed his desire that his father's last ride be in Tallahassee on the same date for the matchup between Alabama and Florida State, where Corso played quarterback and cornerback and was also on the baseball team. Herbstreit, though, responded to the confirmation that Ohio Stadium as the last location for his buddy as a perfect ending, showing support for his friend and for what it'll mean for GameDay fans and college football fans in general. Not only should the game be much-anticipated, but you can bet the GameDay crew is putting together plenty of moments and reflections from what Corso has meant to college football through the years. What a poetic ending to Corso's career in front of the camera for ESPN and GameDay. Now it's part of his public persona, on big game days or behind-the-scenes glimpses. Fans often spot one of his loyal dogs nearby. This past weekend, he decided to include his dog Pete in a simple Father's Day message. The post seemed to attempt to shame Herbstreit for including a pet in a sentimental message. Yet, instead of lashing out or ignoring it, Herbstreit responded with a brief, cutting two-word reply that instantly turned heads: 'Poor fella.' Kirk Herbstreit responds to fan critique with class The fan's jab might have aimed to paint Herbstreit as immature or off-base for his post, but the former Mertin College footballer's reaction won the internet instead. His reply, though short, reflected a calm defiance and confidence that spoke volumes. Herbstreit didn't defend or explain himself, nor did he escalate the conversation. His answer, 'Poor fella,' implied sympathy more than anger. This suggests that the critic might be missing the point entirely; his restrained response reminded many why he's respected not only for his football IQ. Kirk Herbstreit names Georgia Bulldog as best defender in the draft

Kirk Herbstreit names Georgia Bulldog as best defender in the draft When Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Jalon Walker was selected 15th overall by the Atlanta Falcons, fans were excited because of the impact he can make off the bat. Walker was everywhere on defense for the Georgia Bulldogs, totaling 89 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks as an edge rusher/linebacker hybrid. Many experts believe he can have a similar role for an Atlanta Falcons defense that is in desperate need for edge rushers and linebackers. The Falcons had the second-fewest sacks in the NFL last season and have not had an individual player record over 10 sacks since 2016. The Falcons hope that Walker can break this streak. ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit has high hopes for Jalon Walker. "I think he will be the best defensive player in this draft when he gets a chance to play," Herbstreit said after Walker was selected in the draft. Walker played in front of Herbstreit and ESPN's "College GameDay" three times in 2024 (regular season vs. Alabama and Texas and SEC Championship vs. Texas). In two games against Texas, Walker earned a combined 10 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks. As a result, Herbstreit has confidence that Atlanta could get a lot of production out of Walker as a rookie.

Ohio State Legend Kirk Herbstreit Facing Backlash for Wearing Michigan Logo

Former quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Kirk Herbstreit, faces criticism after being spotted wearing the Michigan logo. He was present in the stands to watch his son, Chase Herbstreit, play in the Michigan spring game. The ESPN analyst was wearing what seems to be a lanyard with the Michigan logo and not specifically their merch. Given the rivalry and his ties to the Buckeyes, fans didn't seem to like it at all. Advertisement "Terrible look for a Buckeye player to wear TTUN gear," A fan posted on social media. "And don't give the excuse of his kid. He knows the rivalry and what it means. It's not a good look at all." "In case no one can bother to do a little research …. That's NOT Michigan gear," He said. "Although he did wear M when his son committed - this is just a lanyard for access to spring practice under a jacket - colors? Possibly. But not true M gear." One fan posted a funny meme, lightening up the situation. Some other fan recognised it as a fatherly duty towards his son. He said that Herbstreit was just trying to be a supportive dad. Advertisement "He is being what a Dad should be - supportive. Considering he played on that field as a rival and worked as a broadcaster, I am sure lots of memories come up in the Big House." Fans were divided, with some passionately speaking up about it while others supported his fatherly intentions to support his son.
