Maharashtra to bring holistic progress cards for school students

Students in schools under the Maharashtra state board will get Holistic Progress Cards (HPCs), which will also include their achievements in extra-curricular activities, as opposed to the existing report cards which assess only the academic performance. The state plans to bring HPCs from the ongoing academic year, starting with Class 1 students. This was announced in a fresh Government Resolution issued by the state's school education department on Monday detailing various aspects of the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the school education sector. Apart from informing restructuring of school education, the GR also states that the new curriculum implementation will start with Grade 1 from the ongoing academic year 2025-26. Under the sub-head of evaluation, the GR mentions the introduction of HPC. 'The HPC, as the name suggests, will include information on holistic development of a students, which is more than marks obtained in different subjects, as per the structure of a conventional report card issued for students in existing practice,' said an official from the school education department, adding that National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a model HPC for different stages of school education. Based on this, the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will prepare HPC format for Maharashtra. The official added, 'Under the NEP, there is equal importance to extra-curricular activities from sports to arts and even skill education. A student's achievement in all these non-academic activities will also be part of this report card to provide a more holistic evaluation of a student.' The GR reiterates commencement of the 5+3+3+4 structure of school education, as recommended under NEP 2020 wherein first five years (3 years of pre-primary and classes 1 and 2) will be foundational stage, Classes 3 to 5 will be preparatory stage, Classes 6 to 8 will be covered under middle school and final four years (Classes 9 to 12) will be secondary education. As per the phase-wise implementation plan for the new structure, the GR mentions that it will start with Class 1 from academic year 2025-26. According to the official, a revised GR was issued on Monday following revocation of earlier two GRs on NEP implementation in school education which initially included introduction of a three-language formula.
