Meet Chrysalis: The starship that could take 2,400 humans to Alpha Centauri, nearest star system in 400 years

Chrysalis spacecraft : A spaceship capable of transporting 2,400 humans on a multigenerational, one-way trip to Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system to our own, got the first prize in the Project Hyperion Design Competition, as per a report. The theoretical vessel, named 'Chrysalis', would take approximately 400 years to cover its 25-trillion-mile journey, according to the engineers who designed it, as reported by Livescience. What Is Chrysalis and How Far Will It Travel? Although no one living today would ever step foot on its terminus, the design conceives of a future in which generations would live and die upon a spaceship, a moving civilization in transit, as it would take 400 years to reach Alpha Centauri, according to the report. Live Events What's Inside Chrysalis? The vessel will potentially be 36 miles (58 kilometers) long, and Chrysalis will be designed as a gigantic Russian nesting doll, with encasing habitats that envelop a core, as per the Livescience report. These encasings would house all of the necessities of human existence: homes, schools, parks, farms, and even forests, where every segment would be powered by theoretical nuclear fusion generators, according to the report. At the center of the ship are shuttles and all the communication equipment, the heart of this mobile world, as per the report. The layer closest to the core is expected to be used to produce food, everything from crops and fungi to animals and insects, keeping a delicately balanced ecosystem, as per the Livescience report. The second level would accommodate communal living, with libraries, hospitals, and space for study and play, according to the report. The residential level follows, planned with ventilation and climate control for each home, as per the Livescience report. Beyond that are the areas for industry, recycling, and production, as per the report. The outer shell would contain the gear, raw materials, and machinery, probably maintained by robots, according the Livescience. Chrysalis would only be sustainable for a population of about 1,500 individuals, and births would be planned accordingly, as per the report. The project engineers said that, those responsible for the ship's governance would collaborate with artificial intelligence, "allowing for resilience of the whole social system, better knowledge transfer between the different generations of inhabitants and a deeper vision of the overall dynamics of the Chrysalis spaceship complex," as quoted in the Livescience report. However, the entire plan is purely hypothetical, as some of the required technology, like commercial nuclear fusion reactors, doesn't yet exist, but projects like this one can still add to the existing knowledge base and help engineers improve upcoming designs, as reported by Livescience. FAQs Why do the first travelers spend time in Antarctica? To prepare mentally for the isolation and challenges of space life. How will food be grown on the ship? In controlled environments with plants, fungi, insects, and livestock.

Special Mumbai court acquits two in gangster Ravi Pujari extortion case due to involuntary confession

Mumbai: A special MCOCA court on Tuesday acquitted two accused in an extortion case allegedly connected to gangster Ravi Pujari. The court observed that the confession was a result of threat and inducement, and involuntary, as the parents of the accused were kept in police custody and police officers were present in the confessional room. The case relates to alleged extortion threats made by gangster Pujari to a builder and his family members, demanding Rs 2 crore between Nov 26, 2018, and Jan 18, 2019. However, acquitting the duo, William Rodrigues (30) and Akash Shetty (40), the judge said, "On testing the truth of the confession, it appears that it is not made voluntarily and it is not free from threat and inducement. Therefore, no presumptive evidential value is attached to the confession and it cannot be the basis of conviction of the accused." In the 53-page judgement copy made available on Thursday, the judge pointed to the presence of police officers in civil clothes and the investigating officer inside the confession room. The judge said that the evidence of the police was not genuine. The judge noted that two police officers who departed did not deny the presence of the parents of the accused in their office. "Under such circumstances, as per arguments advanced by the defence counsel, the possibility cannot be ruled out that the parents of William were kept in the custody of the police and thereafter by use of threats about the action against the parents, William was sent for recording of confession. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Price for a 1-Day Walk-in Shower In 2025 Homebuddy Learn More Undo On this ground also, the confessional statement of William is not looking… to be a voluntary one," the judge said. The victim's family was involved in the building construction business. The extortion threats were related to their construction projects. The prosecution alleged that Rodrigues and Shetty were involved in collecting information about the victims and providing it to the then-wanted accused Pujari. It was also submitted that Pujari attempted to threaten the victim's brother and explicitly threatened to kill his son as part of the extortion. The prosecution's case alleges that Pujari obtained the phone numbers of the victim's family through Shetty. Pujari was deported in 2020 and the trial against him was separated. Subsequently, the DCP was appointed to record the confessional statement, and Rodrigues was held in separate police custody at Azad Maidan before the statement was taken. The confessional statement was documented in two parts. The Special Public Prosecutor argued that the confession was "free and voluntary, without any threat," and that it "established the guilt of both the accused and their involvement in the organised syndicate crimes with gangster Ravi Pujari". The prosecutor further stated that Rodrigues was given a sufficient 24-hour opportunity and was kept separately, with the confession corroborated by the victim's evidence. However, the defence lawyer strongly challenged the voluntariness and admissibility of the confession. It was submitted that the mandatory 24-hour period was not properly given to the accused and alleged that the confession was recorded under duress. The defence submitted that the confession was "manipulated" and "retracted at its earlier opportunity," therefore arguing it "cannot be relied upon".

ChatGPT goes down: Internet erupts with hilarious reactions and memes

Image credits: X When it was launched in 2022, ChatGPT was like an unwelcomed and unannounced guest that nobody really cared for except tech enthusiasts. Over the years, the AI platform has become a vital part of everyone's lives. From work emails to personal messages, from relationship advice to family arguments, there's not much people don't ask ChatGPT about. While other AI platforms like Grok and Gemini have made their entrance into the world, they have not been able to capture the hearts of the people like their predecessors. Thus, when the AI platform that people use mostly the entire day went down, there was surely havoc but also a lot of free time. According to Downdetector, 88% of the reported issues were linked to ChatGPT's web platform while 8% were related to the app and 3% were associated with the API. This meant that the creative minds of social media were put to good use to uproar with a meme fest. From sarcastic one-liners to sad GIFs and images, people left no way out to show their disappointment in the AI bot taking a break. Image credits: X One social media user interestingly apologised to the platform writing, "Sorry we overused and made you sick !!! 🥹🤕" Many posted photos of early humans trying to strike a fire with stones, citing it as the activity they were doing when ChatGPT was down. Image credits: X A trend to be seen was people claiming to be a particular surgeon and asking if ChatGPT was down as they were in the middle of a surgery and needed it. "is ChatGPT down for anyone else? i'm a cardiac surgeon in the middle of heart surgery" and "Is ChatGPT down for anyone else? i'm a neurosurgeon in the middle of brain surgery"

Life more imp than playlist: KP reminds citizens

n A 28-year-old woman, Rina Bauri from Kacharipara off Science City, died after being run over by a govt bus near the Milan Mela stop while trying to cross the road when she had earphones on. Cops even found evidence of the bus driver applying brakes, indicating the accident could have been averted if the woman had used the underpass or had been able to hear the bus horn as well as pedestrians' shouts. n Three children were seriously injured near the Scottish Church School playground on Saraswati Puja after a biker — riding a high-end bike in a rash, negligent, and haphazard manner — lost control of his two-wheeler and crashed into them. He was using headphones and did not listen to warnings from passersby. Lalbazar has coined the slogan, "Your life is more precious than your playlist" and has begun a campaign across the city — both online and offline — on the use of earphones by pedestrians and motorists that is contributing to accidents. Citing the state transport department notification on Feb 1, 2018, classifying phone use while driving under "dangerous driving" — following a bus accident in Murshidabad that claimed 44 lives when a driver, reportedly on his phone, drove off a bridge — the cops said this distraction can prove costly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's What a New Walk-in Shower Should Cost In 2025 Homebuddy Learn More Undo At least four such accidents have been reported this year, three involving bikers, though no death has been reported so far. The amended Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, now imposes stricter penalties, with fines ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000, up from the previous Rs 100-Rs 300. Repeat offenders may face licence suspension. However, the notification's silence on Bluetooth devices and earphones has created a legal grey area. "With Bluetooth devices and earphones, it's challenging to determine if a motorist is on a call or listening to music. Either way, it's a distraction," said a senior Lalbazar police officer who requested anonymity. Section 218(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act explicitly prohibits earphone use while driving. Section 218(3) further bans the operation of various audio and video devices, including radio sets, video displays, and sound amplification systems. Traffic safety experts argue that any audio distraction, whether through phone calls or music, compromises driving safety. "The brain focuses more on the audio input and less on driving, increasing accident risks," explained a senior traffic officer. The ambiguity has left both law enforcement officers and motorists seeking clarity. While the basic prohibition on handheld phone use is clear, the application of the law to hands-free devices remains subject to interpretation. Legal experts suggest that until specific guidelines are issued, motorists should err on the side of caution and avoid using any audio device while driving. The police have indicated that enforcement will consider the broader safety implications rather than focusing solely on the method of communication.
