Special Mumbai court acquits two in gangster Ravi Pujari extortion case due to involuntary confession
Mumbai: A special MCOCA court on Tuesday acquitted two accused in an extortion case allegedly connected to gangster Ravi Pujari. The court observed that the confession was a result of threat and inducement, and involuntary, as the parents of the accused were kept in police custody and police officers were present in the confessional room.
The case relates to alleged extortion threats made by gangster Pujari to a builder and his family members, demanding Rs 2 crore between Nov 26, 2018, and Jan 18, 2019. However, acquitting the duo, William Rodrigues (30) and Akash Shetty (40), the judge said, "On testing the truth of the confession, it appears that it is not made voluntarily and it is not free from threat and inducement. Therefore, no presumptive evidential value is attached to the confession and it cannot be the basis of conviction of the accused."
In the 53-page judgement copy made available on Thursday, the judge pointed to the presence of police officers in civil clothes and the investigating officer inside the confession room. The judge said that the evidence of the police was not genuine. The judge noted that two police officers who departed did not deny the presence of the parents of the accused in their office. "Under such circumstances, as per arguments advanced by the defence counsel, the possibility cannot be ruled out that the parents of William were kept in the custody of the police and thereafter by use of threats about the action against the parents, William was sent for recording of confession.

On this ground also, the confessional statement of William is not looking… to be a voluntary one," the judge said.
The victim's family was involved in the building construction business. The extortion threats were related to their construction projects. The prosecution alleged that Rodrigues and Shetty were involved in collecting information about the victims and providing it to the then-wanted accused Pujari.
It was also submitted that Pujari attempted to threaten the victim's brother and explicitly threatened to kill his son as part of the extortion.
The prosecution's case alleges that Pujari obtained the phone numbers of the victim's family through Shetty. Pujari was deported in 2020 and the trial against him was separated.

The prosecution submitted that Rodrigues expressed his willingness to confess on Feb 1, 2019.
Subsequently, the DCP was appointed to record the confessional statement, and Rodrigues was held in separate police custody at Azad Maidan before the statement was taken. The confessional statement was documented in two parts. The Special Public Prosecutor argued that the confession was "free and voluntary, without any threat," and that it "established the guilt of both the accused and their involvement in the organised syndicate crimes with gangster Ravi Pujari".
The prosecutor further stated that Rodrigues was given a sufficient 24-hour opportunity and was kept separately, with the confession corroborated by the victim's evidence.
However, the defence lawyer strongly challenged the voluntariness and admissibility of the confession. It was submitted that the mandatory 24-hour period was not properly given to the accused and alleged that the confession was recorded under duress. The defence submitted that the confession was "manipulated" and "retracted at its earlier opportunity," therefore arguing it "cannot be relied upon".

UAE fines bank Dh3.5m, bans accepting new customers for 6 months over Sharia, AML breaches
The UAE Central Bank fined a bank Dh3.5 million and banned new customers for six months due to violations of Sharia governance and anti-money laundering regulations/(File) A UAE-based bank has been penalised by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) for failing to comply with Sharia governance requirements. The disciplinary action includes a six-month ban on accepting new customers and a financial penalty of Dh3,502,214. According to a statement from the CBUAE, the sanctions stem from supervisory examinations that uncovered the bank's non-compliance with the Sharia Governance Framework governing Islamic banking services. These examinations also found violations of other legal provisions applicable to financial institutions in the country. Legal Basis and Regulatory Context The penalties were imposed under Article 137 of Decretal Federal Law No. (14) of 2018, which outlines the role of the Central Bank in the regulation and oversight of financial institutions within the UAE. This law also covers the organisation and supervision of financial activities, including Islamic banking, and allows the CBUAE to take necessary action in cases of misconduct or non-compliance. The CBUAE has not disclosed the name of the bank involved but made clear that the violations relate specifically to Sharia compliance, a core requirement for institutions offering Islamic financial services in the country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Install the Perfect Pool at Home – Start Here Backyard Pool | Search Ads Learn More Undo Central Bank's Commitment to Integrity and Transparency In its official statement, the Central Bank reaffirmed its commitment to upholding transparency, integrity, and regulatory compliance in the UAE's financial system. Two held after youth duped by ‘cheaper' cab ride offer from Bengaluru airport
Bengaluru: Two cab drivers duped a youth here on the pretext of providing him a cheaper ride home from the airport. The incident, which was reported to the police on June 23, happened when the victim arrived at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from Japan on June 20 and was looking to book a taxi to his J P Nagar home. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Following the complaint, KIA police have arrested the two accused identified as Santosh, 46, and Kabiruddin, 33. They were remanded in judicial custody. According to the complaint filed by Pradeep Penakalapati, a builder from Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh, his son Sandeep, an undergraduate student, had returned from his trip to Japan and walked out of airport Terminal 2 around 1 am. While he was trying to book a taxi, Santosh approached him, offering a ride for Rs 1,000 – cheaper than what cab aggregators would usually charge. Once Sandeep agreed to the fare, the trip started with Kabiruddin, a native of Assam, behind the wheel. However, just a few metres into the ride, Kabiruddin passed his phone to Sandeep, saying there was a ride confirmation call that he needed to respond to. Soon, Sandeep realised it was Santosh at the other end of the call, claiming that the base price for the trip would be Rs 899, with Rs 50 charged for every km. Additionally, 1.9% of the total fare would be levied as night surcharge. Overall, a much higher amount than what was initially agreed upon. Sandeep disagreed with the amount and told Kabiruddin to stop the vehicle so that he could get down, but Kabiruddin continued to drive. He locked the doors and was speeding. He drove till Esteem Mall, turning a deaf ear to Sandeep's insistence to stop the car. Kabiruddin then stopped the car and demanded Rs 4,220. Realising he had been trapped, Sandeep made the payment without a fuss. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kabiruddin then dumped the baggage on the road and sped off. Upon reaching home, Sandeep narrated his ordeal to his father, who lodged a complaint with KIA police. A senior police officer confirmed that there have been complaints about drivers picking up passengers, offering cheaper rides from the airport, but eventually coercing them into paying much higher amounts. He even said that this particular name, Santosh, had figured in some of the other incidents as well, though no one had filed any official plaint against him.
