Netflix just got a hilarious new adventure movie with 93% on Rotten Tomatoes — stream ‘Paddington in Peru' now
After James Bond, you could argue that a very polite brown bear could these days be the U.K.'s most recognizable big-screen star — and his most recent adventure just came to Netflix. Having starred in two family classics, Paddington Bear made his long-awaited return to movie theaters with 'Paddington in Peru', which saw him swap his new home for an action-packed, overseas jaunt. Yes, this highly-rated third feature sees the national treasure going all 'National Treasure' in his former home of Deepest Peru, and if you missed this latest caper in theaters, as of May 15, you can now watch 'Paddington in Peru' on Netflix. The move didn't seem to come with a ton of fanfare. Netflix tweeted it out, but I can't help but feel like perhaps the movie's arrival got overshadowed by the huge amount of Netflix news we got recently, be that all the recent show updates or the news that Lady Gaga would be coming to Tudum 2025. Nevertheless, that's not stopped viewers from checking it out; it's already crashed into the streamer's top 10 movies list mere days after arriving on the streaming service. If you'd spotted 'Paddington in Peru' climbing the Netflix charts and were wondering whether to check it out, you can find a little more info about the new movie below. 'Paddington in Peru' was everyone's favorite marmalade-loving bear's third big screen adventure and saw him — unsurprisingly, given the title — heading back home to Peru. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. He intends to visit his Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. Upon arrival, he discovers that Aunt Lucy has gone missing, prompting Paddington (voiced again by Ben Whishaw) to lead the rest of the Brown family on a thrilling adventure through the rainforests and up to the mountain peaks of Peru to find her. In addition to Whishaw, 'Paddington in Peru' also stars Hugh Bonneville, Hugh Grant, Emily Mortimer, Imelda Staunton, Olivia Colman, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Antonio Banderas, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin and Carla Tous. If you're looking for a heart-warming, light-on-its-feet family-friendly adventure, 'Paddington in Peru' is the movie to stream. It's not quite as perfect as its predecessor, but 'Paddington 2's' reputation amongst cinephiles of all ages made it a near-impossible act to follow. Need I remind you that Nick Cage and Pedro Pascal summed up why it's so good so succinctly in this scene from 'The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent?' The 'Paddington' threequel still has lots going for it, though; bags of charm, hilarious hi-jinks, and is still a charming watch, It also follows in 'Paddington 2's' footsteps by featuring more all-time comic turns from amazing new stars, this time in the form of Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas. If you'd like to take a break from Netflix's many high-octane releases, have some young ones to entertain, or just need a soothing watch, I absolutely recommend streaming 'Paddington in Peru' on Netflix now. Need a second opinion? Well, 'Paddington in Peru' still comes highly recommended. At the time of writing, the movie holds a 93% critics score on the review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes, and the Popcornmeter score is not far behind, either (91%). The site's critical consensus reads: 'Paddington in Peru' whisks away cinema's politest bear to a fresh setting under new creative stewardship, delivering a most agreeable adventure for the whole family', and most of the 180+ reviews logged reflect that summary. For example, Empire's Nick De Semlyen gave the movie a 2-star review, writing: 'while all of the signature elements are present and correct, right down to the soul-shrivelling hard stare, some of the warmth and wit and dashes of brilliant eccentricity we've become used to are absent. Meanwhile, Vulture critic Alison Willmore said, 'even if it's the weakest of the Paddington movies, it succeeds,' adding: 'The innate sweetness of the series carries it past figurative and literal rapids and into shenanigans involving bear carvings, a bear temple in the mountains, and a secret bear community.' Finally, Variety's Guy Lodge said it 'lacks the anarchic sparkle of its instant-classic predecessors,' writing: 'Wilson [...] directs it all with smooth, pacy aplomb and precise tear-milking instincts. But the result isn't as formally or tonally characterful as the previous films, just as the script, more than before, feels bound to a well-worn template. Paddington belongs to everyone these days, as well he should. But he's become a little less peculiar in the process.' In short? 'Paddington in Peru' is still more than bearly-tolerable, and deserves a spot on your Netflix watchlist… even if it isn't quite an all-timer as Paul King's first two features. Not sold on 'Paddington in Peru,' but need more help finding your next Netflix watch? We can still help. Does Paddington in Peru have a post-credits scene?
Paddington and his marmalade are finally back in Paddington in Peru, which is streaming on Netflix UK now. The beloved bear has become a national treasure after affecting several generations of children – and let's face it, adults – with his heartwarming demeanour and optimistic outlook on life. The threequel sees Paddington returning home to darkest Peru, only to discover that his beloved Aunt Lucy is missing. To find her, he must set off on a trek deep into the wild wilderness with his foster family, the Browns. The new film – helmed by director Dougal Wilson – marks the bear's cinematic comeback following 2017's Paddington 2. He did, however, make a memorable brief appearance at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. Paddington in Peru includes tributes to the late monarch and author Michael Bond, as well as a post-credits scene featuring a surprise A-list cameo. Here's your spoiler-filled guide to the ending... Netflix users should watch Paddington in Peru until the very end, because Hugh Grant reprises his villainous role from Paddington 2 in a post-credits scene. Paddington visits Grant's character, Felix Buchanan, in prison. Watch the trailer for Paddington in Peru below: The plot synopsis for Paddington in Peru reveals: "The highly anticipated third Paddington film brings Paddington's story to Peru as he returns to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. "With the Brown family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and to the mountain peaks of Peru." Ben Whishaw returns as the voice of Paddington, while The Crown star Imelda Staunton reprises her role as Aunt Lucy. Hugh Bonneville is back as Paddington's foster father Henry Brown, while Emily Mortimer takes over the part of matriarch Mary Brown from Sally Hawkins. The couple's children Judy and Jonathan are played once again by Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin. Harry Potter's Julie Walters portrays housekeeper Mrs. Bird, and Bridget Jones actor Jim Broadbent plays antiques dealer Samuel Gruber. Oscar winner Olivia Colman joins the franchise as the Reverend Mother, a guitar-playing nun who runs the Home for Retired Bears. Puss in Boots' Antonio Banderas plays riverboat captain Hunter Cabot, and newcomer Carla Tous plays his daughter Gina. She replaced Rachel Zegler on the film after the West Side Story star was unable to take part due to the Hollywood strike. Paul King, who helmed the first two Paddington films, stepped out of the director's chair for Paddington in Peru. He handed the reigns to Dougal Wilson, who is best known for directing several John Lewis Christmas adverts, and music videos for artists such as Coldplay, LCD Soundsystem and Jarvis Cocker. In a statement, King said: "Dougal's work is never less than astounding: funny, beautiful, heartfelt, imaginative, and totally original. Aunt Lucy once asked us to 'please look after this bear.' I know Dougal will do so admirably." Wilson admitted taking over from King was a "massive responsibility", adding: "As a huge fan of the first two films, I am very excited (if not a little intimidated) to be continuing the story of Paddington." King served as executive producer and wrote the story with his collaborators Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton. The screenplay was penned by Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamont, who scripted Paddington's Jubilee sketch with the late Queen Elizabeth II. Paddington in Peru is out in UK cinemas now

Paddington in Peru to G20: the seven best films to watch on TV this week
A South American immigrant in London has to return to home. But this isn't a Reform political broadcast, and the marmalade-addicted bear in question has a shiny new British passport. Aunt Lucy has gone missing from her Home for Retired Bears in the Peruvian rainforest, so Paddington and the Browns (with Emily Mortimer taking over as Mrs Brown) fly off to find her. Less a fish-out-of-water comedy than a fish-back-in-water quest, Dougal Wilson's film gives Paddington a few slapstick pratfalls but it's more of a spoof Indiana Jones tale, revolving round the myth of El Dorado, with Antonio Banderas as a boat captain and Olivia Colman as a nun joining the fun. Tuesday 8 April, Netflix An interesting study in contrasts could be made between Gary Oldman's performance as a slovenly MI5 operative in the acclaimed TV series Slow Horses and his serious-minded, tight-lipped George Smiley in Tomas Alfredson's superbly finessed 2011 drama. John le Carré's thriller novel about the hunt for a Soviet mole in MI6 must have been difficult to squeeze into a two-hour film but the plot here is almost seamless. And Oldman is magnetic alongside a top-notch cast including Tom Hardy, Colin Firth and Kathy 6 April, 10pm, BBC Two After the global success of Your Name (showing on Saturday), Makoto Shinkai doubled down on the teen romance angle in this delightful animated fantasy. Hodaka is a runaway 16-year-old boy in a permanently rainy Tokyo who comes across 'sunshine girl' Hina. She has the magical ability to banish the stormclouds, so they go into business conjuring blue skies for weddings, sports days and the like. But Hina's skill comes at a heavy cost. A film worth watching just for the play of light, clouds and rain, but as a tale of first love it is just as illuminating. Sunday 6 April, 1.20am, Film4 This devious psychological thriller about a marriage is based on an original idea by Daisy Ridley and written by her husband, Tom Bateman, so it's possible the couple are working out some stuff here. Ridley plays Annette, whose daughter Matilda (Hiba Ahmed) wins a role in a movie. However, it's her writer spouse Ben (Shazad Latif) who gets to chaperone the child on location – and lust after its Italian star – while Annette is stuck at home with their new baby. Latif is on point as a self-entitled, sexist fool, while Ridley is mesmeric and edgy as the vengeful Annette. Thursday 10 April, Paramount+ Sign up to What's On Get the best TV reviews, news and features in your inbox every Monday after newsletter promotion In a bit of a career switcheroo, Tony-winning actor Viola Davis joins Hollywood's long line of US presidents turned action heroes in Patricia Riggen's thriller. Danielle Sutton is attending a G20 summit of world leaders in Cape Town, South Africa, when the venue is taken over by terrorists led by Rutledge (Antony Starr, AKA Homelander in The Boys). It's down to Sutton, who's pretty nifty with a firearm, to save her family, Douglas Hodge's British PM and, inevitably, the free world. Thursday 10 April, Prime Video A product of the hippy era in the same vein as Yellow Submarine, French director René Laloux's extremely trippy 1973 cartoon feature follows the Draags, blue-skinned, red-eyed inhabitants of the planet Ygam. They have taken humans, who are tinier than them, from Earth to use as pets – but the 'Oms' have escaped and now constitute a wild population to be controlled and culled. An allegory of our treatment of animals, the film's principal pleasures come from the weird and wonderful flora, fauna and far-out fashions on display, rendered in exquisite cutout animation. Thursday 10 April, 10.45pm, Sky Arts Christopher Zalla's 'inspirational teacher' drama leaves the likes of Dead Poets Society in the dust – not least because it's set in a Mexican border town mired in poverty, corruption and gang violence. Eugenio Derbez is Sergio Juárez, who takes over a sixth-grade class at an institution nicknamed Punishment School. The kids are nonplussed by his unconventional methods – as is the principal – but they quickly become engaged and reveal their hidden potential. Based on a true story, the film's setting guarantees heartbreak as harsh realities intrude on them all. Thursday 10 April, 11.40pm, Film4

‘Paddington in Peru' VFX Studio Reveals Secrets of Bringing the Lovable Bear to Life, From Human Stand-Ins to 4K Fur (EXCLUSIVE)
With 'Paddington in Peru' now on its second week of adventures in U.S. cinemas and having hit a global box office of $125 million, VFX powerhouse Framestore has lifted the lid on how it brought the entirely CG bear — and much of his surroundings — to life. In a VFX breakdown video exclusively given to Variety, the company has unveiled the work that went into not just creating Paddington Bear, but the vast array of other animals that feature in film, the exotic Peruvian locations, including the Home for Retired Bears (mostly shot in a U.K. studio), and a scene in which Paddington takes control (badly) of a riverboat careering down a chopping jungle river (again, shot in the U.K.). The video shows Ben Whishaw — who voices Paddington — in the studio, recording the lines and also embodying the bear emotionally so his face can be used as reference for VFX, others (including animation director Pablo Grillo) standing in for the bear for the CG to be added later and also the shoot that took place in the real life Machu Picchu. More from Variety 'Peter Hujar's Day' Releases First Look Following Sundance Sale Ben Whishaw's Banner Year: The 'Black Doves' and 'Peter Hujar's Day' Star on Refusing to Be Pigeonholed and Playing Characters Whose Sexuality Isn't Their 'Defining Characteristic' Box Office: 'Captain America: Brave New World' Inaugurates a $40 Million Opening Day Alongside the video, Framestore has also provided a few facts about making 'Paddington in Peru,' which was produced by StudioCanal and released by Sony in the U.S. In the film, Paddington's fur was multiplied by 4 times as much as on the 'Paddington 2' to make sure the design translated into 4k resolution. Everything Paddington touches is CG, so the VFX team had to build digital versions of any prop he interacts with. The llamas in the film were all CG. In order to create them, the team first had to visit a llama sanctuary to 'cast' their hero llama (a 'fine specimen' named Diesel). Paddington's duffle coat was recreated, to achieve greater movement, drape, and texture, using a new cloth solver called Carbon. For reference, they used stand-ins wearing the coat to see how it would move, react and interact. For Paddington's roar, they needed to create specific facial shapes and pay closer attention to the inside of his mouth. On set, leaf blowers generated 'wind' to interact with the roar, to make it more realistic. Machu Picchu was not closed off for filming, so the original background plates contain other visitors and tourists that had to be removed using digital matte painting. The rig for the riverboat was suspended 10-12 feet from the ground, in order to be able to simulate the movement on the rough water. Capturing the background plates for the riverboat scene required a 5 camera array, all shooting in 4k. The total render time for 'Paddington in Peru' reached an incredible 88,884,749 hours (or 10,146 years), across Framestore's studios in London, Montreal, and Mumbai.
