In brief: My Favourite Mistake; Homeseeking; The Meteorites: Encounters With Outer Space and Deep Time

Marian KeyesPenguin, £9.99, pp624 (paperback) Anna Walsh swaps her high-flying PR job in New York for a small Irish coastal town to help her friend Brigit launch a luxury wellness centre against local opposition. There, she faces ghosts from her past: ex-flame Joey and estranged best friend Jacqui. Keyes's brilliance is in tackling thorny issues – the invisibility of fortysomething women, perimenopause, bereavement, female desire – with empathy and wit, in engaging prose. This latest novel is another reminder why she is the doyenne of modern fiction. Karissa ChenSceptre, £18.99, pp512 Chen's debut novel tells the story of two families against the backdrop of Chinese history over six decades. Haiwen and Suchi meet as schoolfriends in Shanghai and fall in love in their teens. They are separated in 1947, when Haiwen joins the Nationalist army. Political events send them further afield – Suchi to Hong Kong, Haiwen to Taiwan – until their paths cross in Los Angeles in 2008. Chen skilfully interweaves the personal and the political to produce a kaleidoscopic and affecting work. Helen GordonProfile, £20, pp288 Gordon's highly readable book is an engrossing blend of the scientific and the human. As she visits meteorite landing sites across the globe, the author meets people who have an intimate connection to these billion-year-old objects: those who study them, collect them (at vast expense), have found them, or are simply fascinated by them. We learn about the history of meteorite study and the clues revealed about deep time. To order My Favourite Mistake, Homeseeking or The Meteorites go to Delivery charges may apply

New books we can't stop thinking about

New books we can't stop thinking about Hi booklovers! It's Clare Mulroy here, USA TODAY's Books Reporter. Here's this week's news in books. Recently, I read a book that stopped me in my tracks. More specifically, it had me in tears within four pages, a feat that no other book has accomplished in my long journey as a reader. I'm talking about 'This is a Love Story' by Jessica Soffer, which traverses a couple's decades together in the backdrop of Central Park. It's an exquisite ode to New York, dripping with vignettes of city life and love. If that doesn't entice you (though I hope it will), we've got plenty more reads to recommend. Our monthly recap of January new releases includes 15 novels across genres for you to dive into, from contemporary romance to fantasy to historical fiction. Some of my favorites are: ' Homeseeking ,' a story of childhood friends who fall in love, lose each other and reconnect across the Chinese diaspora and U.S. over sixty years. ,' a story of childhood friends who fall in love, lose each other and reconnect across the Chinese diaspora and U.S. over sixty years. ' We Could Be Rats ,' a heart-wrenching (but also hilarious) tribute to sisterhood, queerness and mental health. ,' a heart-wrenching (but also hilarious) tribute to sisterhood, queerness and mental health. 'Good Dirt,' from the author of 'Black Cake,' which follows a wealthy Black New England family and the public spectacle that surrounds them after their son is murdered. Also on our list is 'Onyx Storm,' which is still holding strong at the top of the USA TODAY Best-selling Booklist. Freida McFadden's latest, 'The Crash,' also joins the ranks this week at no. 3. And if you haven't started reading for our Winter Book Challenge – there's still time! We're raffling off a $100 gift card to those who submit a completed bingo card.
