Why General Mills discontinued cereals like Medley Crunch and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios

This week, cereal lovers everywhere spotted empty shelf space where beloved Cheerios once stood and must be wondering why. General Mills confirmed that Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios, and the 18‑oz size of Honey Nut Cheerios Minis have officially been discontinued, as reported by ABC News. While the smaller 10.8‑oz minis remain available, these full‑size options have been quietly phased out. On social media, disappointment surged. An anonymous cereal blogger first flagged the pull via Instagram, which spread quickly through Reddit and other fan forums. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo On their website, these products have nearly 200 five‑star reviews for Medley Crunch and some 50 for Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios. They have built strong niche followings, but not enough to keep the products afloat, especially as newer, more profitable lines are replacing them. Why did General Mills discontinue the popular breakfast cereals? Live Events Though the company hasn't pinpointed a single reason, its statement cites three key factors: demand declines, ingredient sourcing issues, and ongoing supply‑chain constraints. General Mills clarified it must maintain 'high quality and competitive pricing,' hinting that production costs or complexity may no longer justify these lines amid a shifting portfolio. That shift appears strategic. Recent commentary in Fast Company highlights General Mills' refocus on protein‑enhanced offerings like the new Cheerios Protein cinnamon, strawberry, and cookies‑and‑cream flavors, alongside the revived Frosted Lemon Cheerios for summer. In effect, the company is prizing innovative, health‑and‑wellness aligned cereals over legacy indulgent flavors. Another possible driver is broader dietary pressures. Rising awareness of sugar, fat, and sodium in breakfast cereals, which experienced an 11 % increase in sugar content and may exceed 45 % of the American Heart Association's daily limit in a single bowl, has prompted industry players to reevaluate indulgent SKUs. Discontinuing richer formulas like Chocolate Peanut Butter and Medley Crunch could be a response to healthier consumer trends, regulatory scrutiny, or internal nutrition targets. General Mills continues to reassure fans that discontinued items aren't gone forever. In response to ABC News' query, it stated that much like Frosted Lemon Cheerios, which returned by popular demand, they continue to listen to their fans as they evolve their offerings.

Problem Solved General Mills is pulling three specialty cereals from shelves, a representative for the company confirmed to USA TODAY. The company is discontinuing: Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch (introduced in early 2013) Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios (introduced in 2017) Honey Nut Cheerios Minis products (announced as a new addition in early 2024) Cereal enthusiast and social media user Kayla Simonsen, also known as the Cereal Queen on Instagram, first broke that the cereal was getting the axe in an Instagram post on June 4. "Of the 3, It baffles me the most that Cheerios would discontinue the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios," Simonsen said in the social media post, adding that people should "grab these while (they) can, because what's on shelves is what's left." Why is General Mills discontinuing the cereals? General Mills did not elaborate on why it discontinued the products, but said in a statement on June 17 that it is introducing new cereals for customers to try, like Cheerios Oat Crunch Chocolate. Frosted Lemon Cheerios will also return for a limited time this summer. 'Much like Frosted Lemon Cheerios, which returned by popular demand, we continue to listen to our fans as we evolve our offerings,' the company said. Discontinued cereal may have done better if it were more widely available, Simonsen says Simonsen said Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios were 'fantastic' in her June 4 Instagram post. She also offered her take on what could've helped the Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch cereal last longer. 'The medley (oat) crunch version of honey nut cheerios were so underrated,' she wrote. 'I feel if they had been more widely available from the start that the sales would have been great. It combined HN cheerios, multigrain based flakes that had graham flour in them, & the best honey clusters of granola w/almonds. It was perfection honestly.' According to General Mills, the company recently released a line of Cheerios Protein cereal, which comes in flavors such as cinnamon, strawberry, and cookies and creme. The line debuted this year. Popular cereal brand pulls fan favorite flavors from shelves — and fans are not happy about it: ‘I'm so sad'

If you noticed that some of your favorite Cheerios flavors have suddenly disappeared from shelves in the grocery store — you're not imagining things. The beloved General Mills cereal brand has decided to stop manufacturing three popular flavors: Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios Minis, according to an Instagram post by @the_cerealqueen. Advertisement While the Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios are OG flavors — first introduced in 2013 and 2017, the Honey Nut Cheerios Minis only came to fruition two years ago. The Post reached out to the brand for comment. As of now, it's unclear why these flavors have been pulled, especially since they each seem to have a following. Considering cereal is a breakfast staple in US households — 12% of Americans eat it daily, 18% enjoy a bowl three or four times a week and 23% indulge once or twice a week, according to CivicScience polling — many fans of the breakfast food are disappointed over this sad Cheerios news. Advertisement Some shared their thoughts in the r/cereal forum on Reddit: As of now, it's unclear why these flavors have been pulled, especially since they each seem to have a following. Bloomberg via Getty Images 'I don't think I've actually seen Honey Nut Cheerios Medley Crunch for over a year. But losing Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios is a bigger shock—I didn't buy it as often as I should have,' one user wrote. 'Why tf would they cancel chocolate peanut butter?!' another disappointed customer grumpily asked. Advertisement 'RIP Medley Crunch,' another comment read. Others took to the @the_cerealqueen Instagram post to share how bummed they are. 'Whattttttt I loved the minis!!!!' read a comment. Advertisement 'awww wait these flavors look awesome im sad they won't be around!!' shared someone else. 'I'm so sad chocolate peanut butter cheerios were my favorite. 😟 it's always sold out or low stock at the stores I buy it from. I can't imagine it's due to low sales. I wonder if they are considering making it into the protein variety. Regular Cinnamon cheerios did, so maybe this will too,' another person questioned. The silver lining here is that despite these flavors sounding and probably tasting delicious, they most likely weren't the healthiest options. It turns out that these days, many breakfast cereals have more fat, sugar and sodium — and less nutritional value, according to a new study. The amount of sugar in many cereals rose by nearly 11% — and reportedly one bowl of the breakfast food exceeds 45% of the American Heart Association's daily recommended limit for children.
