IMS-BHU uses Made-in-Indiatech to improve patient care

Varanasi: After six months of successfully running an indigenously developed Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) integrated with a robust Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), one of India's largest level-one trauma centres at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), BHU is terming it a technological renaissance in public healthcare. This highly cost-effective innovation, which combines cutting-edge technology with grassroots accessibility, is currently exclusive to the IMS-BHU trauma centre. It is the first and only govt institute in India to provide e-X-Ray services free of charge, said the centre's 'professor in-charge' Prof Saurabh Singh. He compared the cost efficiency of the PACS being used by many other top govt institutions like RML Hospital New Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur and KGMU Lucknow. While other institutes spent crores with recurring annual maintenance, IMS-BHU implemented the entire PACS HIMS ecosystem for Rs 2.5 crore with zero maintenance cost for 10 years, said Singh. He mentioned that the base cost of PACS HIMS being used at RML Hospital New Delhi and AIIMS Jodhpur is Rs 16.5 crores each and the comprehensive maintenance contract for 10 years is Rs 4.12 crores each. The base cost of PACS HIMS being used at KGMU Lucknow is Rs 8.30 crores and the CMC cost for 10 years is Rs 2.07 crores. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This year's most comfortable shoes are a hit with the over-40 crowd Ultra-Comfortable Shoes Undo The move is expected to save over Rs 2 crores annually, freeing critical funds that can now be redirected toward life-saving infrastructure. The trauma centre commissioned its Made in India PACS HIMS on Feb 6. Singh said, "This initiative has not only transformed clinical workflows but redefined what accessible, efficient and patient-empowered trauma care looks like in the digital age." The seamless digital ecosystem of this PACS HIMS has made bulky X-ray films and paper-based records a thing of the past. Now, every patient walking into the trauma centre is enveloped in an end-to-end digital health environment. Medical imaging is now captured, stored, analysed and transmitted entirely through PACS, ensuring zero data loss, instant accessibility and lightning-fast diagnostic turnaround. Surgeons, physicians, and radiologists access high-resolution X-rays, CTs, MRIs, and ultrasound scans in real time from their authorised devices, eliminating the need for physical reports and enabling faster clinical decisions. This results in reduced patient waiting time, lower operational costs, enhanced diagnostic precision and an unprecedented boost in institutional efficiency. This facility, comprising India's first free e-X-Ray over WhatsApp, is proving to be a game changer in this sector. In a country where digital access can mean the difference between life and death, IMS-BHU has pioneered a patient-friendly mobile PACS interface that delivers radiology reports directly to patients' WhatsApp inboxes at zero cost. Singh said in the past six months alone over two lakh patients, many from rural areas, have benefited from this service. "Our patients are now empowered, our doctors are faster, and our institution is leaner and greener while the trauma centre, IMS-BHU has dared to democratise it and succeeded spectacularly," said Singh. Make doctor's appointments, get lab reports on one platform: Delhi CM rolls out hospital management system

Patients can now make doctor's appointments, get lab reports, view and pay their medical bills at Delhi's government hospitals — all through a single digital platform, said Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta as she digitally inaugurated the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) on Thursday. 'Appointments can be scheduled from home, eliminating long queues. Once a patient presents their health card, treatment can begin immediately,' she said. Along with the HIMS, Gupta also launched 34 new Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and 8 new Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs). Addressing the event at the Delhi Secretariat, the CM said over 93 lakh ABHA IDs (Ayushman Bharat Health Account IDs) have also been created, providing every resident with a digital health card. 'This card will allow citizens to access medical services in any hospital, anywhere, based on their medical history,' she noted. She also said the digitisation of hospitals is a reflection of the Capital's progress and commitment to quality healthcare. While inaugurating the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, the CM said, the new centres will soon be dedicated to the public by MLAs in their respective constituencies. The government is planning to open 15 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in every constituency operating as primary health centres, offering multiple lab tests and essential services, she added. The event also saw Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh announcing the government's plans to establish 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the Capital. The CM also claimed that corruption in medicine procurement has been effectively eliminated. 'All purchases are now processed digitally. We addressed the issue of overpriced medicines earlier by opening Jan Aushadhi Kendras. To strengthen healthcare delivery, we have also initiated permanent recruitment. Over 1,350 nursing positions that had remained vacant for over a decade have now been filled,' she added.

CM launches health initiatives to offer patients timely care

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday launched a slew of initiatives, including 34 new Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and eight Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs), to build a 'digital, affordable, and accessible' healthcare system in Delhi. Speaking at the launch event at the Delhi Secretariat, Ms. Gupta said these steps would ensure patients receive timely and efficient care. The Chief Minister also launched the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), which will allow patients to book OPD appointments, access lab and radiology reports, view medical records, billing and more — all through a single digital platform. 'True progress' 'Appointments can now be scheduled from home, eliminating long queues. Once a patient presents their health card, treatment can begin immediately. This is true progress,' Ms. Gupta said. Officials said training for HIMS-based OPD registration has already been conducted across hospitals, with implementation under way. The system, developed with support from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, will also complement the existing HIMS used for monitoring national health schemes and programmes. The CM said over 93 lakh Ayushman Bharat Health Account IDs were issued in the Capital, giving every resident a unique digital health identity. Ms. Gupta said corruption in medicine procurement has been curbed with end-to-end digital processing. 'To tackle overpriced medicines, JAKs were opened. Permanent recruitment has also been initiated and over 1,350 nursing posts lying vacant for over a decade have now been filled,' she said. Three-tier model On the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Ms. Gupta said they will serve as community-level health centres, offering multiple lab tests and basic services under a three-tier healthcare model covering primary, general, and super-speciality care. 'Our goal is to open 15 such centres in every constituency,' she said. She also criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, saying her administration was 'still searching for their so-called health model'. 'Despite all the hype, people of Delhi continued to suffer without basic care. Not even one hospital was completed. Their Mohalla Clinics couldn't offer basic services like a tetanus injection,' she said. AAP said in a statement that 'the L-G did not start the process of hiring doctors and paramedic staff for new hospitals and blocks despite multiple reminders'. Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the government plans to set up 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across Delhi. With the additions, 67 centres are now operational. Each facility offers a package of 12 essential health services, including vaccination, antenatal and postnatal care, mental health, TB and leprosy elimination, screening for non-communicable diseases, along with in-house lab tests, yoga sessions, and telemedicine. While some Mohalla Clinics have been rebranded and upgraded as Urban-Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, the government is scouting for more vacant spaces for expansion.

Delhi CM to inaugurate 34 new AAMs, 8 Jan Aushadhi Kendras

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will inaugurate 34 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) and eight Jan Aushadhi Kendras across government hospitals on Thursday. Last month, the government launched 33 AAMs across the city and is planning to launch a total of 1,139 in phases, with the aim of delivering primary services such as prenatal and postnatal care, immunisation, mental health counselling, among other services. While some of Aam Aadmi Party's mohalla clinics have been upgraded and rebranded, the Delhi government has scouted for new locations for others. Ms. Gupta will also launch the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), which is developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. HIMS will include Outpatient Department (OPD) and Inpatient Department (IPD) registration, laboratory and radiology integration, electronic medical records, inventory and operation theatre management, and centralised hospital dashboards. Training for OPD and IPD modules has been completed across all Delhi government hospitals, with the remaining modules set to be implemented in a phased manner, the CM's office said in a statement on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the new Jan Aushadhi Kendras will be launched across government hospitals in the city on Thursday. These centres will offer over 2,000 generic medicines and 300 surgical items at prices 50-80% lower than market brands.
