Cricket, connections & courtship: How Rinku Singh met SP MP Priya Saroj

LUCKNOW: Cricketer Rinku Singh and Samajwadi Party MP Priya Saroj first crossed paths through one of Priya's friend's father, who is also a cricketer. The connection eventually blossomed into a relationship, supported by both families. According to Priya's father, Tufani Saroj, SP MLA from Kerakat in Jaunpur, the two had known each other for some time before formally announcing their intent to marry. The couple's engagement is scheduled for June 8 in Lucknow, followed by a wedding ceremony on November 18 at Hotel Taj in Varanasi (Kashi). Confirming the dates, Tufani Saroj said on Sunday that preparations are already underway to host grand celebrations. Prominent political leaders, especially from the Samajwadi Party, along with cricket stars, film personalities, and industrialists are expected to attend the events. In January, Tufani Saroj publicly announced the upcoming marriage between his daughter and the T20 cricket sensation after the two families held initial discussions to formalise the alliance. Like Rinku, who rose to fame by smashing five sixes in the final over during an IPL 2023 match against Gujarat Titans—completing the highest-ever last-over chase of 29 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders—Priya too had a spectacular rise. She became one of the youngest parliamentarians in the country by winning the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Machhlishahr (reserved), a constituency previously represented three times by her father before he shifted to contest from the Kerakat assembly seat in 2022. With Rinku focusing on the T20 series against England and the IPL, and Priya involved in her political campaign, both families agreed to decide the wedding dates only after the couple could sit together post-elections and tournaments. Now, with the dates set, the families are preparing to celebrate the union of two rising stars in cricket and politics.

Hyderabad man detained, served notice for flying drone near Taj hotel in Colaba

The Mumbai Police on Tuesday detained a 22-year-old man from Hyderabad for allegedly illegally flying a drone near Taj hotel in Colaba early Monday morning. Police said an FIR has been registered against the man and he has also been served a notice. On Monday early morning, a patrolling team from Colaba police was alerted by the staff of Taj hotel about a suspicious object that he spotted in the air on P. Ramchandani Road. When police carefully inspected it, they found it to be a drone. The police team immediately launched a search action and eventually tracked down the remote access control point of the drone to a vehicle stationed at jetty number 5 near the Gateway of India. The police team found that the man, identified as Armalla Lincoln, was flying the drone from the car. He was taken to Colaba police station. 'During inquiry, he revealed that he is from Hyderabad and had come to Mumbai for a tour. He was staying at a hotel in Worli and visited tourist points in south Mumbai and was flying a drone for viewing structures. He claimed that he did not know that flying drones is banned in Mumbai. Since he was flying a drone without due permission and violated prohibitory orders of Mumbai police commissioner, a case has been registered against him and he was subsequently served a notice,' said Pramod Bhovte, senior inspector at Colaba police station. Police have also seized his drone worth around Rs 70,000. Hotel Taj was targetted by the Pakistan borne Lashkar-E-Taiba fidayeen militants on November 26, 2008, in which 167 people were killed and more than 250 injured. The popular five-star hotel is one of the most iconic hotels in the country near the Gateway of India and had been in the terrorist's top target list. The hotel sees round the clock external as well as internal security cover as its a vital installation for Mumbai police. On Monday, the Powai police also detained a boy for illegally flying drones in the area. He was testing his drone after repairing it, but it crashed after the device developed a technical glitch. As police received information, police detained the boy and booked him. Ban on drones, flying activities till June 3 Mumbai police DCP (operation) Akbar Pathan on Tuesday reiterated that flying drones in Mumbai has been banned till June 3 as many areas in the city have been declared as red zone (where flying drones is strictly prohibited), by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). 'By the orders of Mumbai Police Commissioner, from May 5 to June 3, flying drones, remote control micro-light aircraft, paragliders, para motors, hand gliders, hot air balloon, etc., and other flying activities (without due permission from the police) are banned in Mumbai, due to security reasons,' said DCP Pathan. Police may extend the ban after a security assessment. Security forces in Mumbai are already on alert amid India-Pakistan tension, and there has been a strict ban on flying activities in the city as Pakistan has also used drones for attacks on India.
