Warmer, brighter Thursday in Philadelphia area; nice summer weekend ahead. See the weather forecast.

Thursday is shaping up to be brighter in the Philadelphia area as high pressure slides in from the northwest. With more sunshine breaking through, temperatures will begin a warming trend that carries us toward the upper 80s by the weekend. It's a return to more classic early August weather, but without the oppressive humidity — at least for now. Rain chances will be limited, with only a stray shower, mostly south of the city. Otherwise, we're in for a fairly quiet and dry stretch to kick off end of the first week of August. This weekend looks sunny and warm, with highs in the mid- to upper-80s. With no major storm systems in the forecast, it's a good time to enjoy the milder air while it lasts. All in all, it's a refreshing midweek break from the July heat, and a calm, gradual warm-up into the weekend. Thursday: Partly cloudy. High 83, Low 67. Friday: Mostly sunny. High 83, Low 64. Cooler temps Friday in Philadelphia area, beautiful summer weekend ahead. Here's the weather forecast.

August starts Friday with breezy northeast winds, mostly cloudy skies and stray showers in the Philadelphia region. But the big story is the much cooler air that arrives. Highs on Friday will hover in the mid-70s, about 10-15 degrees below average and almost 20 degrees cooler than Thursday. The last time our high temperatures were in the 70s was more than a month ago on June 27. We had 21 90-degree days this July. That ties the most 90-degree days ever recorded for Philadelphia in the month of July. So far, we have seen 30 90-degree days since June 1. All that stifling heat is behind us now, and there are no NEXT Weather Alerts in the next seven days, so make you plans for what is going to be an incredibly nice weekend. Both days will be in the low to mid-80s with sunny skies. Nights will be cool and pleasant with clear skies and low 60s. The first week of August begins with sunny skies and highs in the mid-80s. However, by Wednesday clouds move in, and rain returns Thursday. Friday: A.M. shower, cool. High 75, Low 66. Saturday: Beautiful. High 83, Low 64. Sunday: Sunny, nice. High 84, Low 62. Mostly sunny Sunday with an isolated shower or storm in the Philadelphia region. Here's the forecast.

After a more gray day on Saturday, the Philadelphia region is seeing the best chances of overnight showers and storms to our south. There was a lot of lightning associated with the storms across Maryland, so we'll be watching for perhaps one or two of those making their way closer to Delaware. Sunday will give us mixed skies with a trend for much more sunshine than Saturday. With the instability in the air, we cannot rule out an additional shower or rumble, especially in the late afternoon. Severe weather is likely to stay mainly north and east of the region, but we'll keep an eye on it. Monday through Wednesday, much drier, cooler and more pleasant conditions arrive behind the cold front. Skies will be sunny, humidity will be low, and highs will only reach the low to mid-80s. These may be some of the nicest days so far this summer. By Thursday, we warm to the 90s again, and on Friday, another chance of storms is in the forecast. Sunday: Shower, storm. High 91, Low 74. Monday: Much nicer. High 87, Low 71. Tuesday: Sunny and dry. High 83, Low 65. Wednesday: Sunny skies. High 86, Low 65. Thursday: More humid. High 91, Low 67. Friday: Partly cloudy. High 95, Low 73. Saturday: Partly cloudy. High 94, Low 77. NEXT Weather Radars Hourly Forecast
