Guardiola's Man City verdict on Celtic target Simpson-Pusey

The Parkhead club have reportedly made a loan offer for Simpson-Pusey, who made his first English Premier League appearance for City back in November 2024. The youngster started and played the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 loss away to Brighton and Hove Albion. Despite the result, Guardiola was rather complimentary of Simpson-Pusey post-match. He said [One Football]: "The guy [Simpson-Pusey] played really good, the young lad again, with this composure and duels and everything was good. It's not easy for him. Read more: "Normally the young lads, they must come in with support from the team, with Rodri in front of them, right? With the best Kyle [Walker], and defenders, and now we support him. "Now he's playing in a position that is difficult for him but he performed unbelievable. "We have a central defender to help us for the future, for the next years. I'm really pleased. Always there is good news when the situation goes bad, and this is one of them." Brendan Rodgers already has the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Auston Trusty, Dane Murray and Stephen Welsh available to him in the centre of defence, although he appears keen to bolster his options before the end of the summer transfer window.

Evan Ferguson makes incredible impact with huge goal haul at in-house Roma game

Evean Ferguson has got off to a fast start in Rome as he scored FOUR goals in a training game on Thursday. The Republic of Ireland international has moved to Roma on a season-long loan as he looks to get his career back on track after an underwhelming 18 months. Previously touted as one of the hottest prospects in world football, a run of injuries and lack of playing time saw Ferguson's progress halted, and his parent club, Brighton and Hove Albion, have deemed him surplus to requirements this season. But after an injury-free run and a full pre-season to work, the hope is that Ferguson can get back to his best. And the early signs are good with videos circulating of Ferguson looking sharp in training as he banged in four goals in training. The 20-year-old Ireland striker admits it was hard to turn down the opportunity to join one of European football's giants after his season-long move was confirmed earlier this week. "It's a big club and we want to finish as high as we can," said Ferguson, who has passed a medical. "When I came in, we were talking about Champions League targets and getting back up there, that's the expectation of this season." "When you have a club like Roma, one of the biggest in Europe that are interested, it's hard to turn down – especially when you feel like they want you to come here, saying how good it could be for you and your career. For me it's a good opportunity. "When I landed you could tell the culture straight away, how big the club is, from landing you can hear the fans, people and cameras and interviews. "It's a big honour to come and play in front of people who want to see you do well. I can do a few different things but the main thing I want to do is score goals, prove myself and get back out there. I just want to get out there, play football and score goals." Aged just 20, Ferguson has time on his side and already has 22 caps to his name with Ireland.

Watch: Evan Ferguson receives hero's welcome in Rome as Brighton boss confirms loan deal

Brighton and Hove Albion have not ruled out Evan Ferguson returning to the club next year despite loaning the Irish striker to Roma with a €38m purchase option. The 20-year-old travelled with his delegation on Sunday by private jet Ciampino Airport, where he was greeted at by droves of excited fans. 🔴 Ecco Evan #Ferguson a Ciampino accolto da un centinaio di tifosi. Domani le visite mediche. Prestito oneroso da 3 milioni con diritto di riscatto da 38. — Checco Oddo Casano (@CheccoCasano) July 20, 2025 Ferguson hardly featured for the Seagulls following the arrival of Fabian Hürzeler as manager just over a year ago, gradually reintegrating him following injury before sanctioning a loan to West Ham United in January. That change of scene didn't spark a revival for the man from Bettystown in Co Meath. He struggled for game-time under David Moyes and despite Brighton recently losing João Pedro to Chelsea, the German manager didn't view Ferguson as a reliable option to spearhead their attack when the Premier League season begins on August 16 at home to Fulham. He's allowed him to join the Serie A giants for the season – believed to be based on a loan fee of €3m – with the option available to make the transfer permanent. As Ferguson arrived in the Italian capital to complete the formalities of the switch, Hürzeler provided his reasoning behind the decision, talking up the traits which led to a notional price tag of €100m after he'd scored a Premier League hat-trick against Newcastle United in September 2023. 'For us, it is always important that the individual player has an environment where they can develop,' he said. "We decided the loan was the best option (but) Evan is still a player of us. "He still brings us quality with him. He is a target player and I am sure when he gets more game-time he will one day be back and be an important player for us.' Time will tell whether that's doable as the Italian club have factored in first refusal on his future into the package. Ferguson will work under legendary head coach Gian Piero Gasperini during a pre-season programme that includes friendlies against Aston Villa and Everton in England three days apart in early August. The league opener for I Giallorossi is against Bologna on August 23.

Evan Ferguson lands in Rome ahead of Serie A loan move

Republic of Ireland striker Evan Ferguson landed in Italy on Sunday evening to complete a loan move to Serie A giants Roma from Brighton and Hove Albion. Ferguson's club career has plateaued at the Seagulls, with a short spell at West Ham in the second half of last season falling disappointingly flat. A mooted move to Roma has been in the works but they could not reach an agreement with Brighton on a fee for the player should the Italians wish to sign Ferguson permanently. A compromise has now seemingly been reached, with the 20-year-old jetting into Ciampino Airport on Sunday where he was welcomed by roughly a hundred Roma fans. Roma finished fifth in the league last season under Claudio Ranieri, who was subsequently replaced by former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini on a three-year contract.
