But the Meath man struggled following an ankle injury and fell out of favour once Fabian Hurzeler took over.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham but made just eight appearances and failed to score.
The Roma fans are certainly excited about his capture with more than 100 of them turning up at Rome Ciampino Airport to welcome the attacker.

‘Irish Harry Kane' - Roma fans hail Ferguson as Ireland striker scores again

He's barely at the club a few days, but already fans of AS Roma are gushing over Evan Ferguson. The Ireland striker could hardly have asked for a better start when he scored four goals and produced one assist in a 9-0 thumping of Serie D side UniPomezia, which was played behind closed doors at the club's training ground. But Saturday's pre-season friendly away to Kaiserslautern, at a full Fritz-Walter Stadion, was always going to provide a much tougher test for the on-loan star. However, it didn't take Ferguson long to deliver. His 16th minute goal was enough to earn the Serie A side the win. And his overall performance, where he led a high press that new boss Gian Piero Gasperini brought with him from his former club Atalanta, brought him much love from the club's fantatical support base. Many took to social media to give their verdicts on the Irishman's display. Here are some of the highlights: 'Athletically not at their sharpest, as is expected at this stage of preparation, but man, I love the style of play. That man-to-man pressure, the compactness, etc ... Few risks conceded, interesting passing patterns. Ferguson is just a joy to watch!' 'Keep it up, Rome! Great job Ferguson' 'Our Irish Harry Kane' One fan even referenced the loan deal from Brighton, which has a €40million option to buy at the end of the season, writing: 'Sooooooooooooooo can we just buy him outright now?!' Another kept it simple, just posting, 'Evan', followed by 28 love heart emojis in Roma colours. Many Roma fans were producing Irish flag emojis - and after years of heartache, one wrote: 'Another goal from Ferguson. Is it already okay to get our hopes up?' Ferguson's arrival could spell bad news for Roma's 28-year-old Ukraine striker Artem Dovbyk. 'At 20 years old, (Ferguson) already shows character and desire. Honestly, it's very promising. The only doubt I have is that after a year of Dovbyk, seeing a striker who moves into spaces, attacks, and holds up the ball feels incredible. It's still too early to get carried away. But he looks promising.' Another posted: 'This year will be tough for Dovbyk. This guy (Ferguson) is really strong.' One asked: 'When is he being presented with the golden boot?' Other posts included: 'Mark my words, this season Evan Ferguson will make the difference in Italian League! Rt if you agree!' 'Evan Ferguson is in some the best hands for production and maximising attacking talent playing under Gasperini' 'Evan Ferguson bout to win serie a golden boot calling it now' 'I'm buying all the available Evan Ferguson stocks' 'I love Evan Ferguson in this team so much' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

Arsenal confirm Viktor Gyokeres signing as transfer saga finally ends

Arsenal have sealed the deal for Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, splashing out £63.7million on the Swedish striker who is set to join the squad on their pre-season tour in Asia. Gyokeres, set to don the No. 14 shirt at the Emirates, was widely expected to depart Sporting after an impressive goal-scoring stint in Portugal and even skipped pre-season training to push through a move. The North London club had initially eyed Benjamin Sesko, but his wage demands led them to make Gyokeres their prime target. After some haggling over add-ons, Arsenal and Sporting have finally come to terms. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said: "We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club. The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves. "Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat. (Image: PA) "We're excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to start working with him. We welcome Viktor and his family to Arsenal." Gyokeres said: "I always want to score. To be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters, I can't wait. It will be an amazing feeling. "I started here [in England], it feels like a long time ago. I think I've improved a lot since then. Now I want to prove myself for real and perform together with the team." Gyokeres will return to England, where he previously played for Brighton and Hove Albion, Swansea City and Coventry City. It was his performances with the Sky Blues that saw Sporting, then led by Ruben Amorim, sign the striker. Gyokeres' competitive debut for Arsenal is likely to come against Manchester United at the start of the Premier League season on August 17 - which will see him come up against his former manager. Arsenal knew that their priority this summer was on adding an out and out striker with Arteta having to find makeshift solutions. That has seen Kai Havertz often lead the line over the past 18 months when fit, whilst Gabriel Jesus has struggled for fitness and consistency. Gyokeres takes Arsenal's spending to around the £200m mark with the Swede joining the likes of Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke in bolstering the club's squad ahead of another attempt at ending their wait for a Premier League title.
