Ravens sign three undrafted rookies, including kicker John Hoyland

On Monday, the Baltimore Ravens signed three undrafted rookies, bringing their roster to 89 players. The three signed were Wyoming kicker John Hoyland, Army offensive tackle Lucas Scott and Louisiana-Lafayette defensive back Keyon Martin. Hoyland finished his five-year college career going 73-of-92 (79.3). In 2024, he completed 15-of-19 attempts (78.9). According to Ryan Mink, 'Hoyland only missed twice in 54 attempts during his career from under 40 yards. Three of his four misses last season were from 50 or more yards.' Advertisement Hoyland joins sixth-round pick Tyler Loop as competition for the open kicker position on the Ravens' roster after the team released Justin Tucker on May 5. Scott joins the Ravens as another versatile offensive lineman. He began his career at Army as a right guard and right tackle before transitioning to fullback/tight end. Interestingly, he played for Army Head Coach Jeff Monken, cousin of Ravens' Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken. Martin was ranked as one of top undrafted rookie free agents. He was ranked as The Athletic's Dane Brugler's No. 70 cornerback in the draft on 'The Beast.' He exceled in his Pro Day, running a 4.38 40-yard dash and a 6.89 three-cone, which would've ranked No. 13 among all prospects at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. More from

Sale of Barnsley military properties 'dishonours' war hero

A former army veteran has spoken out over the decision by an armed forces charity to sell off military cottages built in honour of his brother in bungalows, known as the McKay VC Memorial Cottages, in Hoyland, were built in 1988 and dedicated to Sgt Ian John McKay, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria being built to house disabled military veterans the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) sold the properties in 2024 to Mountview Estates. While veterans still living on the site have been told they can stay for the rest of their lives, Mr McKay's brother-in-law John Vickers, 58, said he did not want his relative's memory "tainted". Sgt McKay, from Wortley, served in the Falklands and died aged 29 during the Battle of Mount Longdon in 1982 while trying to save his fellow soldiers from enemy was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), the UK's top military Vickers said: "He was obviously a fair bit older than me but he was a magnificent calm individual, warm and loving""He was the reason I joined the army" he served with the Queens regiment on tours in Gibraltar and Northern Ireland before leaving the force in 1991 after suffering an injury in Cyprus. Veterans currently living in the bungalows on Pine Close in Hoyland told the BBC last year how unsettling the sale had been for September SSAFA said they had a "binding stipulation" that all current residents could live in their properties for as long as they wished but that the sale "would free up more financial resources to help more people through the charity's core work".Mr Vickers described the approach by the military charity as "commercial short-termism dishonouring my brother-in-law's name"He added: "If you dedicate a series of buildings to the care of veterans in the name of someone who was a veteran it is behoven on the organisations involved to maintain that legacy "I'm exceptionally disappointed that this has not happened."SSAFA had an obligation to maintain them as memorial cottages, not just for one generation or just the existing residents but for a legacy of at least 125 years." In a statement a spokesperson for SSAFA said:"We understand the strength of Mr Vickers' feelings, and would like to make clear that the lifetime protected tenancies the residents of the McKay VC Memorial Cottages signed nine months ago are just that: protected and for life."They continued, "Further, the sale of the Pine Close properties is leaving a legacy of help and support to many in the military family past, present, and future, not only the residents of those properties."A spokesperson for Mountview PLC said they did not wish to comment. Hoyland: Bogus asylum seeker letter refuted by Barnsley Council

A bogus letter claiming 60 asylum seekers were soon to be housed in Hoyland has been refuted by Barnsley Council. The false information was recently put through local residents' letterboxes and shared online in two local Facebook community groups. It stated an agreement had been made for asylum seekers to move into apartments at Hoyland Town Hall within the next few weeks. However, after liaising with the Home Office, the local authority confirmed the letter and social media posts were "completely untrue". In a statement, Barnsley Council said: "A letter sharing false information about asylum seeker accommodation has been posted through letterboxes in Hoyland and shared by Facebook accounts. "We can confirm that the information in both the letter and social media posts is completely untrue." Over 24 hours, the Facebook posts attracted hundreds of comments from local community pages later removed the posts with an acknowledgement the information was published in good faith but was incorrect. A council spokesperson said it was "totally irresponsible" for material to be posted and shared without fact-checking."It's crucial that community pages take the time to verify information before sharing it on social media to a large audience - not everything you read is true, and it's sometimes created to cause the spread of hate or to promote people's personal agendas," they added. Baltimore Ravens face major kicking shakeup as John Hoyland joins Tyler Loop in post Justin Tucker era to fill the void

Rookies John Hoyland and Tyler Loop are now competing to fill Justin Tucker's shoes (Image via AP) In a stunning shift that few saw coming, the Baltimore Ravens are entering a new era without the leg of Justin Tucker—one of the most iconic and reliable kickers in NFL history. The team released Tucker on May 5, marking the end of a 14-year tenure during which he became the league's most accurate kicker with an 89.1% success rate. Now, Baltimore is turning to fresh faces and open competition to find their next special teams cornerstone. Hoyland and Loop: two rookies, one shot at replacing a legend Baltimore Ravens signed former Wyoming standout John Hoyland on Monday following a strong showing at a recent tryout. He'll now go head-to-head with rookie Tyler Loop , a sixth-round pick out of Arizona, in what promises to be one of the most closely watched position battles of Ravens training camp. Hoyland brings a strong collegiate résumé, especially in short-range consistency—missing only twice in 54 career kicks from under 40 yards. His long-range game is still developing, with most of his misses coming from beyond 50 yards. But his calm under pressure and work ethic made him an attractive candidate for the Ravens, who may be seeking the next undrafted success story—much like Tucker himself once was. Loop, on the other hand, enters the competition as the first kicker the Ravens have ever drafted. He made 6 of 9 field goals from 50-plus yards at Arizona, including a booming 62-yarder that showcased his leg strength. Both kickers had strong showings in rookie minicamp, earning praise from head coach John Harbaugh. 'Both kickers, I thought, looked really good today. So, we got them out there behind the line with the snap and everything, and I think they made them all, didn't they? So that's good to see. It's a good start that way.' Tucker's release wasn't just about age or performance. The move came amid an ongoing NFL investigation involving 16 massage therapists accusing him of inappropriate behavior, as reported by the Baltimore Banner. The Ravens called it a 'football decision,' but the timing raises questions about the franchise's internal calculus. Also Read: Who is Rich Eisen? Inside the sportscaster's legacy and his much-anticipated return to ESPN Regardless of why the decision was made, it has opened the door for a major shakeup at a position that's long been one of the team's few constants. Ravens' kicker competition is the biggest thing to watch ahead of OTAs, training camp

Ravens' kicker competition is the biggest thing to watch ahead of OTAs, training camp Baltimore is preparing for training camp, and the Ravens' kicker competition will be the biggest battle to watch Perhaps it was Rich Eisen who said it first. Kickers are people, too. Never in a million years did anyone see this coming. How did the exit by the all-time leading scorer in Baltimore Ravens history lead to a battle between placekickers becoming one of the more intriguing offseason conversations of the summer? We wouldn't have believed it had we not seen it ourselves. Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen shared a congratulatory embrace to wish each other well as the Buffalo Bills moved on to the AFC Championship Game and the Ravens began their offseason protocol weeks earlier than anyone wanted them to. The NFL Draft came. Baltimore selected a kicker for the first time in franchise history, signaling the end of Justin Tucker's 13-year run with the organization. His release was announced on May 5th. Little did we know that the conversations about his replacement were about to get more interesting. Justin Tucker's replacement, Tyler Loop, earns his first taste of life in the NFL. Ravens rookie minicamp has come and gone (May 3-5). A surprise signing was announced: former Wyoming Cowboys kicker John Hoyland was one of three roster additions made by Baltimore on May 12 after impressing during a rookie minicamp tryout. Hoyland connected on 79.3% of his field-goal attempts and 99.3% of his extra-point tries during his five-year run at Wyoming. His 22 successful field goals during the 2022 Cowboys football season set a single-season school record. Three of Hoyland's four misses during his final season at the collegiate level were from 50 yards or further. Only two of 54 attempts from under 40 yards resulted in misfires. He is attempting to do what Justin Tucker did 13 years ago: make the team as an undrafted rookie free agent, but it won't be an easy endeavor. Loop is no slouch either. He enters the NFL after being named a 2024 Lou Groza Award semifinalist, an honor given annually to college football's best placekicker, so let the games begin. For the first time in forever, Baltimore's special teams unit has a real-deal kicker battle, and believe it or not, it's one that everyone would be wise to pay attention to.
