Jailed ‘Real Housewives' star Karen Huger denied in bid for work release
Like many jail inmates, Karen Huger raised her hand when she became eligible for work-release. And for good reason. In Montgomery County, Maryland, where she was sentenced to 12 months for drunken driving, that meant transfer to a highly regarded facility geared toward rehabilitation and treatment that looks more like a college dorm than a jail. It would be a (very) small step toward normality for Huger, 61, who'd come to incarceration from a sprawling $2.2 million home appropriate for scenes in the TV show in which Huger starred: 'The Real Housewives of Potomac.'

The reality star repeatedly asked officers if they knew who she was and appeared to slur her words as she said she is "really rich" and "Thomas Jefferson's concubine." The footage also showed Huger telling an officer he would be "ashamed" when he Googles her. "Real Housewives of Potomac" star sentenced to a year in prison for DUI crash
Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger was sentenced to one year in jail Wednesday for a drunk-driving arrest in March 2024, according to the Baltimore Banner. In December, Huger was convicted of seven charges related to her DUI after she crashed her car in Montgomery County. She was acquitted of reckless driving but found guilty of negligent driving, failure to control her speed to avoid a collision and other charges, court records show. The 61-year-old has faced three traffic cases between 2006 and 2011. "The defendant's four drunk driving offenses have spanned a 17-year period," Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Terrence J. McGann told the Banner. "Can we believe that she's only driven while intoxicated four times in the last 17 years, or is it more likely that she's been very lucky and her inebriation has gone undetected?" Huger was also ordered to pay more than $2,000 in fines and is prohibited from driving her car for a year after she is released from jail. According to the Baltimore Banner, video footage taken inside the police station at the time of Huger's arrest show her refusing to take a breathalyzer and captured her saying, "Oh God, I'm lit." "The body cameras definitely prove that they were right and I was wrong," Huger said at her sentencing. "I should've handled the situation differently." The Banner reported that Huger's defense attorney said she was "at peace" with the ruling. Huger has 30 days to file an appeal. "Real Housewives" stars face legal trouble Huger is not the first "Real Housewives" star to face legal trouble in Maryland. In December, former "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star and businessman Peter Thomas was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for failing to pay more than $2.5 million in employment taxes. Thomas owned several bars in Baltimore and Miami, Florida, including Bar One Baltimore. According to court documents, between 2017 and 2023, Thomas's businesses failed to pay more than $2.5 million in employment taxes. Court records show he instead used the funds to make cash withdrawals, make real estate and travel purchases totaling $370,000 and make retail purchases from luxury stores totaling more than $250,000. He is known for his appearances on the Bravo show alongside his ex-wife, Cynthia Bailey. In 2023, he was found not guilty of attacking a customer at his Harbor East restaurant, the Baltimore Banner reported.

Police body camera footage was shown during the trial — and later was released to news outlets, and shown on Bravo as well — which showed the 'Housewives' star appearing to slur and be very intoxicated, all while speaking at length about the show and producer Andy Cohen to the arresting officer, who was not interested. She was found guilty in December of five of the six charges, including driving under the influence and negligent driving. Huger was acquitted of reckless driving. Huger was absent from the recent Season 9 multi-episode 'Potomac' reunion, as she was in a rehabilitation center following her verdict, which many of her co-stars said they considered to be a play for sympathy before the sentencing. The day after the crash, Huger released a lengthy statement to TMZ, which read, 'Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes during this very frightening experience. I am still in shock from last nights incident, but grateful to be alive today. With the passing of my Beloved Mother, Grief comes and goes in waves, and with Mothers Day approaching it has felt more like a tsunami. 'Last night I met a girlfriend for dinner, we talked and brought up some very emotionally sensitive topics. I was crying on my way home and saw a car heading right for me. I swerved to avoid the head-on collision, hit the divider and then a tree. I'm hurt, bruised up a bit, but so grateful I am alive! I did receive citations, one of which was unrelated to the incident which is understandable, but what was most surprising is that the car that almost hit me just drove away! 'I would like to stress, it's important to understand your emotional state when driving and may this be a reminder to all to use their seatbelts, my Mother may be my Guardian Angel but the seatbelt saved my life.'
