'Downton Abbey cast to reunite for emotional "farewell" documentary after final film - but one major change is set to leave fans furious'
The Downton Abbey cast are reportedly set to reunite for an emotional 'farewell' documentary following the release of the third and final movie - but one major change is set to leave fans furious. To mark the grand finale, the cast will come together for a glossy new documentary titled Farewell Downton Abbey, according to The Sun. However, in a major blow to the millions who originally tuned in on ITV, the swan song is expected to land on a streaming platform - shutting out fans without a subscription. A TV insider told the publication: 'This will be bittersweet news for all the people who would be thrilled at the prospect of seeing all the stars of Downton Abbey coming together one last time. 'Because it means there's likely to be a bidding war between the streamers to get this, probably Netflix, who currently show all the TV episodes, and Prime Video, who have the first two movies. 'With the release of the third film it's 'Goodbye Downton Abbey'. But not everyone is going to be able to take part in that, as only those who have the right subscription will be able to see it.' MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment. The news comes after it was confirmed last year that creator Julian Fellowes and his team were working on Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The third and final film will see the return of Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern as the Earl and Countess of Grantham. As well as Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley and Jim Carter as Mr Carson - some of the beloved stars who rose to fame when the original series aired from 2010 to 2015. The upcoming movie will hit cinemas on September 12, and the documentary, produced by British company Monkey Kingdom, is expected to drop around the same time. It's said to include behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews, and emotional tributes from fans reflecting on the show's enduring legacy. The latest news follows the release of the brand new trailer for the final film - which left fans in tears and teased a major scandal involving Lady Mary. In the three-minute clip, Robert Crawley prepares to hand over his duties as head of the household to his daughter Mary. However, her plans to become her father's successor are thrown into jeopardy when news of her divorce reaches the newspapers. Set in the 1930s and written by Julian, the final chapter is directed by BAFTA and Emmy nominee Simon Curtis, who also helmed 2022's Downton Abbey: A New Era. Alongside returning favourites like Hugh, Jim, Joanne Froggatt, Laura Carmichael, and Michelle, new faces Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan will also join the cast. The trailer ends on an emotional high, as Lady Mary declares: 'Long live Downton Abbey.' Downton Abbey is available for streaming on several platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and ITVX Premium.

Now actor Layton Williams is returning to our screens, this time in the second series of the Netflix hit Geek Girl. It tells the story of awkward adolescent Harriet Manners, played by Emily Carey, who is suddenly plunged into the bizarre world of modelling. The first series of the comedy drama, which is an adaptation of the children's novels by Holly Smale, debuted last year, while the second is due to air in 2026. I am privileged , nay proud, to be involved in this fine institution and top-notch show.' Puppeteer Phil Fletcher is the man behind Hacker. Gill: Sex role was healing 5 SEX Education star Gillian Anderson has revealed how playing a therapist in the Netflix drama made her realise she hadn't always dealt with trauma in her own life. Speaking on Davina McCall's Begin Again podcast she said: 'We have a tendency to brush things under the carpet when traumatic things happen to us. 'I mean I know that I certainly have, I just kind of get on with my life. It's not until somebody with some objectivity says, 'Whoa wait a minute, what's going on here and you need to take care of yourself or you need to address this or you need to report this.'' She added: 'During MeToo, the degree to which women were encouraged to share how many times or how often they had been harassed or attacked or raped indeed. 'It's important we make a fuss. It's not nothing.'

However, news of her divorce from Matthew Goode's Henry Talbot might put her impending stewardship in jeopardy. As in the previous trailer, it appears the family's financial troubles might see them sell and leave the abbey for good, as Robert is seen kissing the wall of the building and walking away from it. Fans were sentimental as they remembered Dame Maggie Smith's iconic Violet Crawley, as a shot showed a portrait of Violet displayed on a wall inside the stately Yorkshire home. 'As a huge fan of Downton Abbey, it's incredibly hard to say goodbye. This show and the movies has been a part of my life for so many years, it truly became like a second family, with characters I've grown to love deeply. Every story deserves an ending, and though it's difficult, especially with the loss of the incomparable Maggie Smith, I'm grateful that Violet's chapter was beautifully closed while she was still with us. In many ways, it feels like the right time to let go,' one fan wrote on YouTube. 'Absolutely cannot wait to see this! Though I don't want it to end. Make a prequel with Maggie Smith's character as a young woman,' wrote another. Fans also appreciated the change in the once-contentious dynamic between sisters Mary and Edith (Laura Carmichael), which now seemed much warmer. if only sybil could see them now. #DowntonAbbey — val (she/her) 🇵🇸 (@edithcrxwley) June 30, 2025 'long live Downton Abbey.''amen to that.'i'm not crying you are. — lucy (@winonasfilm) June 30, 2025 The official synopsis for the film reads: 'When Mary finds herself in a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble, the household grapples with the threat of social disgrace. Downton Abbey first look at final movie as cast back for one last time
Downton Abbey is back for one final movie - with the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan and Joanne Froggatt all returning for the movie sequel Downton Abbey has given fans a first look at the final movie trailer. The cast of the hit ITV show, which was turned into a movie franchise, is back for one last time - with many of the famous faces gracing out screens again. Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern and Paul Giamatti are all back for the movie alongside Penelope Wilton, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Laura Carmichael and Harry Hadden-Pato. Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Robert James-Collier, Lesley Nicol and Sophie McShera complete the cast alongside Raquel Cassidy, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Dominic West, Arty Froushan, Joely Richardson and Douglass Reith. The grand finale of Downton Abbey will see the Crawley family and their staff navigate the 1930s. Mary is front and centre as she navigates a public scandal whilst the family face financial issues. Elsewhere, the whole household struggles with the fall out as the family must face change as they prepare for a new chapter - but what does the family face and how will it all end for the Crawleys and their staff? Simon Curtis has directed the movie, whilst creator Julian Fellowes has done the screenplay. He will also produce alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge and Nigel Marchant is executive producer. Joanne - who plays Anna Bates - previously admitted it was going to be hard to say goodbye to her character for good. "Oh my goodness, it's going to be hard! We've said goodbye a few times, thinking, 'This is the end', at the end of the seasons. Then we did one movie and we wondered if we'd get a second movie. "This really is, the third and final, so this really is goodbye. It's going to be emotional, but all good things must come to an end, I suppose," she said. Joanne also teased a "full circle" moment in the final film. She said: "We come to the core of the family and the servants, what the future will be and looking back at where the family have got to now. It's a beautiful full-circle moment that it comes to at the end. "There was a stage where reality TV came in and it was all the rage. There wasn't much drama being made in the UK. "That was sad but then eventually it came good again and Downton Abbey was one of the first shows to sort of bring back the eagerness for good drama. It's been amazing to ride it all out and still be around to tell the tale."
