Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 1999 epic Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam , starring Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Ajay Devgn, isn't just remembered for its grandeur—it's also renowned for a special kind of on-set magic. In a heartfelt interview marking the film's 26th anniversary, Bhansali opened up about the deep bond that shaped both the romance onscreen and off it. 'It wasn't only between Salman and Aishwarya—there was a sense of family among all of us,' Bhansali shared. He fondly recalled how actors like Zohra Sehgal, Helen, Vikram Gokhale, Smita Jaykar, alongside Salman and Aishwarya, formed a close-knit unit during shooting. That warmth, he says, brought an authentic emotional resonance to the film—something rare in today's more clinical, professional shoots. Chemistry that went beyond the script Even after all these years, the emotional chemistry between Salman and Aishwarya remains palpable. Their romantic pairing wasn't merely scripted—they were reportedly seeing each other off-camera as well. Bhansali attributes the silence surrounding their on-set rapport to the 'innocence' of the time—unobtrusive, natural, and impactful. Not a remake—A masterpiece made Bhansali revealed that there was intense pressure to change the film's heartbreaking climax—many argued that Sameer (Salman) should end up with Nandini (Aishwarya). But the director stuck to his creative vision. It paid off: Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam went on to sweep the 45th Filmfare Awards, bagging Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress among its eight wins. With sweeping visuals, evocative music, and soul-stirring performances, it became Bhansali's definitive declaration of cinematic intent. The legacy lives on For Bhansali, this film remains one of his most fulfilling experiences. 'I don't think I've felt such a connection on any other set,' he said, noting that today's shoots lack the same emotional intimacy. Like a perfect fusional blend of fairy tale and reality, Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam still resonates—its off-screen warmth transcended into the celluloid, crafting a tale of love, sacrifice, and a bond that went beyond the script. Twenty-six years later, its emotional legacy and unforgettable songs remain etched in the hearts of fans.

How Was Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai's Chemistry On Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam Sets? 'Love Was In The Air'

Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai's De Chuke Sanam was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film hit theatres in 1999. When Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai worked together on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 1999 movie Hum…Dil De Chuke Sanam, their on-screen chemistry impressed everyone. But do you know what their equation like behind the camera? In a recent interview, Bhansali opened up about the same and revealed that 'love was in the air' when they all were shooting for his iconic film. 'Yes, there was love in the air. But not just between them; there was a lot of affection among all of us. Zohra Sehgalji, Helen Aunty, Salman, Aishwarya, Vikram Gokhale, Smita Jayekar—we were like one big family. I don't think I've had such a fulfilling experience shooting any other film," the filmmaker told ETimes. Bhansali further remarked that he does not see such equations between actors now. 'Today, it's purely professional. And honestly, I'm fine with that. Times have changed," he added. Interestingly, Salman was dating Somy Ali during that time. Last year, Sony was speaking to Times Now, when she claimed that the closeness between Salman and Aishwarya grew while they were shooting for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. 'The shoot (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) was going on when I called up Salman but he didn't pick up. Then I called Sanjay Leela Bhansali and he said, 'He can't speak to you right now because he's in a shot'. I was like 'If he's in a shot, why aren't you directing it? Why are you picking up my phone call?' The logic defied me. He was cornered by me and didn't know what to say," she said. 'Later, Aish started coming to Salman's gym where we were living. Salman and I used to live on the ground floor of Galaxy where we had a gym also," Somy continued and then added, 'Aishwarya and Salman fell in love during the shooting of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. I was getting information from the servants inside who favoured me. I knew in my heart that their relationship was something that's gonna blossom. I knew it was time for me to leave." Reportedly, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai broke up in 2002 and did not work together again after that. In a 2012 interview with Simi Garewal, Aishwarya addressed her tumultuous break-up with Salman and said, 'I think I have quite shut it out. I think I wouldn't want to get into looking at it any which way and especially on a public platform. I really wouldn't want to." Aishwarya Rai married Abhishek Bachchan in April 2007. They welcomed their daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan, in 2011. First Published:

From creative battles and casting perfection to the deep emotional energy that powered the film, Bhansali speaks to Etimes with rare honesty about the innocence of that era, his unshakable artistic convictions, and why Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam remains one of the most heartfelt creations of his career. Many fans consider 'Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam' to be your finest work. Do you agree? It's certainly my gentlest film. There's a certain innocence in the way the romance unfolds. After my first film ( Khamoshi: The Musical ) didn't do well, I wanted to create something without compromise. Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam was that film. What do you mean by compromise in 'Khamoshi'? I was forced to shoot an alternate, happy ending due to pressure from distributors who didn't want a tragic conclusion. But with Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam , I stood firm on the ending I had envisioned from the beginning. Was there pressure to have Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's character end up with Salman Khan instead of Ajay Devgn? Yes, there was pressure. But that's a story I'd prefer to save for another day. What was it like working with Aishwarya for the first time? She was my perfect Nandini. I couldn't have asked for a better embodiment of the character I had in mind. She matched my vision exactly—and that's a rare experience in my filmmaking journey. The chemistry between Salman and Aishwarya felt very real. Was there love in the air off-screen too? I like the way you put it—yes, there was love in the air. But not just between them; there was a lot of affection among all of us. Zohra Sehgalji, Helen Aunty, Salman, Aishwarya, , Smita Jayekar—we were like one big family. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now I don't think I've had such a fulfilling experience shooting any other film. Do you think that kind of camaraderie on sets still exists? Not at all. Today, it's purely professional. And honestly, I'm fine with that. Times have changed. If you were to remake Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam, would you change anything? I wouldn't remake any of my films—except maybe Khamoshi , and only because of the altered ending. Otherwise, I prefer to leave my stories as they are. Did Salman try changing 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' climax?
