the grand tapestry of Indian cinema, few films have etched themselves into the cultural consciousness quite like

As the film completes 26 years, the filmmaker reflects on what made this sweeping love story timeless. From creative battles and casting perfection to the deep emotional energy that powered the film, Bhansali speaks to Etimes with rare honesty about the innocence of that era, his unshakable artistic convictions, and why
Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam
remains one of the most heartfelt creations of his career.
Many fans consider 'Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam' to be your finest work. Do you agree?
It's certainly my gentlest film. There's a certain innocence in the way the romance unfolds. After my first film (
Khamoshi: The Musical
) didn't do well, I wanted to create something without compromise.
Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam
was that film.
What do you mean by compromise in 'Khamoshi'?
I was forced to shoot an alternate, happy ending due to pressure from distributors who didn't want a tragic conclusion. But with
Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam
, I stood firm on the ending I had envisioned from the beginning.
Was there pressure to have Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's character end up with Salman Khan instead of Ajay Devgn?
Yes, there was pressure.
But that's a story I'd prefer to save for another day.
What was it like working with Aishwarya for the first time?
She was my perfect Nandini. I couldn't have asked for a better embodiment of the character I had in mind. She matched my vision exactly—and that's a rare experience in my filmmaking journey.
The chemistry between Salman and Aishwarya felt very real. Was there love in the air off-screen too?
I like the way you put it—yes, there was love in the air. But not just between them; there was a lot of affection among all of us. Zohra Sehgalji, Helen Aunty, Salman, Aishwarya,
, Smita Jayekar—we were like one big family.

I don't think I've had such a fulfilling experience shooting any other film.
Do you think that kind of camaraderie on sets still exists?
Not at all. Today, it's purely professional. And honestly, I'm fine with that. Times have changed.
If you were to remake Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam, would you change anything?
I wouldn't remake any of my films—except maybe
Khamoshi
, and only because of the altered ending. Otherwise, I prefer to leave my stories as they are.
Did Salman try changing 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' climax?

Fire trio reunites: Shabana Azmi recalls how Farhan Akhtar's input changed the ending

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi recently reunited with director Deepa Mehta and co-star Nandita Das, celebrating 25 years of their landmark film Fire. Along with a photo where the trio is seen in matching black outfits, Azmi reflected on the film's legacy, surprising creative decisions, and Farhan Akhtar's small contribution to the film."The #Fire trio! 25 years later the film continues to be a point of reference all over the world," Azmi captioned the post, emphasising the impact of the 1996 film, which was part of Mehta's Elements revealed that 'Fire' originally had a different ending, which was eventually changed on the advice of a young Farhan Akhtar. 'Few know that it had a different ending. It was young @faroutakhtar who advised that the ending should be changed to what is finally kept,' she wrote. Another interesting detail involved the film's language. Azmi shared that 'Fire' was initially intended to be shot in Hindi. However, the dialogues didn't resonate authentically in translation. 'So literally two days before the shoot, Deepa Mehta decided to keep the original English, greatly approved by producer Bobby Bedi. Thank god the actors were bilingual and could rise to the challenge,' she which told the story of two women navigating desire and freedom within the confines of a patriarchal household, stirred controversy upon release but has since achieved cult status. Lauded for its bold narrative and emotional depth, it remains a seminal work in Indian independent cinema and LGBTQ+ at a masterclass session during the Mumbai Film Festival 2024, where Azmi was in conversation with actor Vidya Balan, she had discussed the ending and how Farhan Akhtar's advice changed the film's climax."What's interesting is that Farhan is younger than Zoya and I had discussed this film with him back then. He was very young, and I told him to read the script. And he loved it. He said, 'I don't like the end because this woman (Radha) dies. It will ruin the whole purpose of the film, and people might think, you did something wrong'. He said, 'She must survive'," Azmi said, adding that she shared the feedback with by Deepa Mehta, 'Fire' starred Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi, Jaaved Jaaferi, Vinay Pathak and Kulbhushan Kharbanda..
