These songs were bigger than the originals they sampled
Ever heard a song so good you thought it had to be one-of-a-kind, only to later find out it was built on the bones of a classic? Sampling is the bridge that connects generations of music lovers—and some tracks have become so massive, they've completely eclipsed the originals they borrowed from. Here's a breakdown of chart-dominating hits that flipped legendary melodies into pop culture moments all their own. 'Nice For What' (2018) – Drake Built on Lauryn Hill's 'Ex-Factor' (1997), which itself samples Wu-Tang Clan's 'Can It Be All So Simple' and Barbra Streisand's 'The Way We Were,' Drake's anthem soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, replacing his own hit, 'God's Plan.' That switch-up made him the first artist ever to replace himself at No. 1 with a new release. 'Whatcha Say' (2009) – Jason Derulo Jason Derulo's debut took Imogen Heap's 'Hide and Seek' (2005) and pushed it into the mainstream. Though the original peaked at No. 37 on Billboard's US Digital Song Sales chart, Derulo's track climbed to No. 1 on the Hot 100 and sold over four million copies in five years. 'Whatcha Say' featured the now-iconic bridge from Heap, who earned her first Hot 100 No. 1 as a writer through the sample. '21 Questions' (2003) – 50 Cent Sampling Barry White's 'It's Only Love Doing Its Thing' (1978), 50 Cent delivered a softer side on this track—despite Dr. Dre's initial hesitation to include it on Get Rich or Die Tryin'. The gamble paid off. While White's track and its Simply Red cover barely cracked the Top 60, '21 Questions' flew to No. 1, staying there for four weeks and giving 50 his second Hot 100 chart-topper after 'In da Club.' 'The Show Goes On' (2010) – Lupe Fiasco 'Float On' by Modest Mouse (2004) laid the sonic foundation for this anthem, and Lupe Fiasco made it his own. The original hit No. 1 on the US Alternative Airplay list and No. 68 on the Hot 100, but Lupe's take reached No. 9 and received Grammy nods for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. 'Stronger' (2007) – Kanye West Inspired by Daft Punk's 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,' Kanye's fusion of French house and hip-hop not only pleased the original artists, it topped the Billboard Hot 100. 'Stronger' eventually dethroned 'Crank That (Soulja Boy)' and stayed on the chart for a whopping 27 weeks. 'Hung Up' (2005) – Madonna ABBA rarely allows their catalog to be sampled, but they made an exception for Madonna. 'Hung Up' transformed 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)' into a disco-pop juggernaut that introduced a new generation to the Swedish supergroup's magic. 'Bootylicious' (2001) – Destiny's Child Stevie Nicks' guitar riff from 'Edge of Seventeen' (1982) found new life in this Destiny's Child smash. Though Nicks' solo track peaked at No. 11 on the Hot 100, 'Bootylicious' became the girl group's fourth and final No. 1, and a cultural moment unto itself. 'Gangsta's Paradise' (1995) – Coolio Coolio's chart-topping single wasn't just a tribute—it was a full-on reimagining of Stevie Wonder's 'Pastime Paradise' (1976). It became the top-selling single of 1995 and earned accolades like a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance, and two MTV VMAs for Best Rap Video and Best Video from a Film. 'Stan' (2000) – Eminem A haunting vocal sample from the start of Dido's 'Thank You' (1998) helped cement Eminem's 'Stan' as one of the most impactful hip-hop tracks of all time. Dido's original peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, but 'Stan' carved out its own space in rap history and introduced Dido's voice to millions. 'California Love' (1995) – 2Pac feat. Dr. Dre Joe Cocker's 'Woman to Woman' (1972) laid the instrumental groundwork for this West Coast anthem. Originally a B-side to 'Midnight Rider,' the track finally cracked the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 56—decades before Dr. Dre and 2Pac flipped it into one of the most iconic beats in hip-hop. Some of these originals were already respected, others were hidden gems but in the hands of modern artists, they became supernovas. Sampling isn't just an art form; it's a cultural reset button, reminding us that the past still has plenty to say.

Madonna and Elton John make up after 20-year feud: ‘Forgiveness is a powerful tool'
Elton John has had a lot to say about Madonna over the years, but recently he offered the fellow pop icon two simple words: 'Forgive me.' Madge announced Monday on Instagram that she and the 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' singer have put an end to their public beef after more than two decades. The 'Hung Up' hitmaker shared a photo of John wrapping his arms around her backstage after his latest 'Saturday Night Live' gig. 'We Finally Buried the Hatchet!!!' she said in a lengthy caption for the photo. For years John has made his not-so-kind thoughts about Madonna very clear and very public. The 'Rocket Man' singer, 78, began throwing shade at Madonna as early as 2002 when he bashed her James Bond theme, 'Die Another Day,' as the 'worst Bond tune ever.' Over the years, John also has taken swipes at the 'Material Girl' artist's live singing abilities and in 2012 dubbed her a 'fairground stripper.' In her Instagram post, Madonna explained how she had revered John since her teenage years and never understood why 'someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist.' When she learned that John would be returning to Studio 8H in New York to promote his new music with Brandi Carlile, Madonna said she 'needed to go backstage and confront him.' 'When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, 'Forgive Me,' and the wall between us fell down,' the 'La Isla Bonita' singer, 66, continued. 'Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes. We were hugging.' In the comments, John echoed Madonna's enthusiasm for mending their relationship and thanked his fellow Grammy winner for paying him a visit and for 'forgiving me and my big mouth.' John admitted he is 'not proud' of his previous comments and praised Madonna for her 'groundbreaking' career and her legacy, which he said has inspired generations of female artists. He also commended her for her HIV/AIDS activism when she began her career in the 1980s. Like Madonna, John said he is 'grateful we can move forward' amid a time of divisiveness that he said has left him feeling 'distressed.' John continued: 'Both you and I have wholeheartedly been accepted and embraced by communities who are under threat around the world. By pulling together, I'm hopeful that we can make great things happen for those who really need support.' In her post, Madonna hinted that she and John would soon become more than just friends: They will be collaborators. She said the 'Tiny Dancer' singer-songwriter told her during her visit that he had written a song for her and wanted to collaborate. 'It was like everything came full circle,' Madonna said. Madonna and John's resolution comes months after the latter revealed his eyesight has been deteriorating after he had a severe eye infection last summer. He announced in September that the infection 'unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye' and said he has been receiving care for his condition. Months later, John said, 'I have lost my eyesight,' which made it difficult for him to watch a West End production of his 'The Devil Wears Prada' musical adaptation. Prior to 'Saturday Night Live,' John opened up about his condition to the London Times in an interview published Friday. 'I can't see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I'm used to soaking it all up,' he said. 'It's distressing. you get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I'm lucky to have the life I have.'

Madonna On Donald Trump Calling Himself A King: 'If This Is A Joke, I'm Not Laughing'
Madonna is calling out Donald Trump once again after the current President of the United States called himself a king. The 'Hung Up' singer took to social media to comment on Trump's Truth Social post, in which he likened himself to a king. In addition to the quote in the caption, Trump's team shared an image that channeled a Time magazine cover with the POTUS wearing a crown. 'Long live the thing,' read the fake illustration of the fake magazine cover. RELATED: Madonna, who has been vocal in calling out Trump, shared a message on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter, to express she didn't find any of this humorous. 'I thought this country was built by Europeans, escaping living under the rule of a King, to establish a New World governed by the people,' she posted on X. 'Currently, we have a president who calls Himself. Our King.' She continued, 'If this is a joke, I'm not laughing.' Madonna had recently spoken out against Trump for his anti-LGBTQ+ agenda since taking office earlier this year. 'It's so sad to watch our new Government slowly dismantling all the Freedoms we have been fighting for and WON over the years. Don't give up the Fight!' Madonna wrote on X. Madonna's message comes after the divisive Trump signed an executive order titled 'Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness that restricts transgender military service. The order reinstates a policy from Trump's first term that Joe Biden rescinded in 2021, which allowed trans people to enlist in the military and serve openly. When Donald Trump returned to the White House, his Inauguration speech was plagued by anti-trans rhetoric, saying it would be 'official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.' Trump would later make it official by signing an executive order that recognizes only two genders. Best of Deadline 'The White Lotus' Season 3 Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Arrive On Max?
