Why Kieran Culkin Is Perfect As Caesar Flickerman
Tributes! There is a new advancement in the casting for the upcoming prequel, Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping casting — Kieran Culkin has been cast as Caesar Flickerman! This prequel takes viewers back 24 years before the events of the original Hunger Game series, and centres around the 50th Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell — where the rules were more cruel and brutal. Flickerman was previously played by the iconic Stanley Tucci. To match that level of sass, wit and energy, casting Culkin was a brilliant choice! Kieran Culkin is having his moment in Hollywood — winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain, and playing the unfiltered middle child, Roman Roy in HBO's Succession, which has a cult following. All in all, he is doing very well. We are waiting to see his own spin on this legendary character in one of the greatest franchises ever. Culkin has been cast alongside a star-studded ensemble cast — Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Joseph Zada as young Haymitch Abernathy, Ralph Fiennes as young President Snow, Jesse Plemmons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee Latier, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Lili Taylor as Mags Flanagan, Molly McCann as Louella McCoy, and Iona Bell as Lou Lou. Behind the cameras, in November 2024, Francis Lawrence, the Hunger Games franchise director signed a first-look producing deal with Lionsgate through his company, about:blank. Francis Lawrence has directed four of the Hunger Game films: Catching Fire, Mockingjay 1 and 2, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Those films were absolute bangers, so I can't wait to see what this film holds for us. Speaking about the decision to cast Culkin, the co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Erin Westerman said: "Kieran's scene-stealing presence and undeniable charm are perfect for Caesar Flickerman, the sickeningly watchable host of Panem's darkest spectacle. Stanley Tucci made Caesar unforgettable — and now Kieran will make the role entirely his own." Furthermore, Producer Nina Jacobson clarified the thought process behind this casting. She stated, "Kieran's magnetism, wit and unpredictability make him a perfect fit for Caesar Flickerman. A host like Caesar transforms brutality into entertainment, and an actor as layered as Kieran makes sure we don't look away." Coming back to the OG Caesar — Stanley Tucci's take on the character was to make him flamboyant, flashy, and uber charming! In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he spoke of his involvement with the character, saying, "I'd like to try teeth. I'd like to try some noses. I want him to have a tan. We have to really make it look like he has plastic surgery." Needless to say, he delivered. Culkin has established himself as an actor with an unpredictable mindset—a blend of sarcastic and dark humour, charming wit, and bursts of vulnerability that consistently draw the viewer's attention. It's this very approach to his craft that will make his portrayal of Caesar eccentric and electric. His co-star and director of the film A Real Pain, Jesse Eisenberg revealed on the Graham Norton Show, that he had cast Kieran for the part, not having watched ANY of his past work, but simply because of his essence. Culkin's naturally chaotic demeanor in interviews and award shows is more than well-documented. Like this wholesome interaction between him and Colman Domingo on Actors on Actors which had fans envious of the contagious energy he possesses. I would say his 'controlled chaotic' mannerisms will challenge the suave and entertaining version of Tucci when playing this character. But since it is the younger version of Flickerman in one of the most brutal hunger games, chaotic is fitting for the mood of Panem. / Via Culkin has talked about his 'free-associative acting style' in the past. He said in an interview with Vulture, " It's written, and I understand the character, and then some shit comes out sometimes; that's it. And I don't force it." And it is this very energy... which is what makes me so excited to see him wear those wigs as Caesar. The Voice Season 26 will build on over ten years of the show and 25 seasons' worth of talent. The reality singing competition will feature a new grouping of coaches for Season 26, two of whom are completely new to the red chairs. Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé will join veteran coaches Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani for their turn in the blind audition singing show, which has produced artists like Cassadee Pope, Brynn Cartelli, and Carter Rubin who all won their respective seasons. Live Nation Adds Trump Confidant, Kennedy Center Head Richard Grenell To Board Amid DOJ Antitrust Lawsuit
Giant Live Nation has named Richard Grenell, an close confidant and ally of President Donald Trump recently in the headlines for slamming Les Misérables actors and Lin Manuel Miranda, to its board of directors. The ticketing and concert promotion juggernaut and venue owner unveiled its latest director in the midst of landmark antitrust lawsuit against it by former President Joe Biden's Department of Justice a year ago. The DOJ and 30 state and district attorneys general filed the civil suit against Live Nation Entertainment and its wholly-owned subsidiary Ticketmaster for 'monopolization and other unlawful conduct that thwarts competition in markets across the live entertainment industry.' The lawsuit includes a request for 'structural relief,' meaning forcing the company to break up. Live Nation said Grenell 'brings decades of experience in diplomacy and negotiations, having served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Acting Director of National Intelligence, Presidential Envoy for Kosovo-Serbia Negotiations and Presidential Envoy for Special Missions. Mr. Grenell also currently serves as the President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where he oversees operations and programming at one of the nation's premier cultural institutions. 'His career experience will help support Live Nation's mission to bring more live music to the world, while also advocating for industry reforms that protect both fans and artistss,' Live Nation's announcement read. 'We are pleased to welcome Ric to our Board,' said Randall Mays, Chairman of the Board of Live Nation Entertainment. 'His background will bring a valuable perspective as Live Nation continues to contribute to a growing live music industry around the globe.' Trump named Grenell interim president of the Kennedy Center, where he also installed himself as chairman and fired half of the board members, shortly after taking office. Grenell has blasted entertainers who won't perform at the venerable Washington, D.C. venue due to Trump's newfound involvement with the venerable arts institution. 'The power of live performances to bring people together while boosting local economies is transformative,' said Grenell. 'I'm proud to join the board and support Live Nation's efforts to grow this positive impact of concerts around the world.' ‘Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping', The Big-Ticket Project At Cannes Market With One Huge Territory Ask Sparking Chatter — The Dish
EXCLUSIVE: While it's not uncommon for buyers to gripe, here at the Cannes market buyers have lamented the lack of big-canvas must-have projects. As we reported coming into the event, the big-ticket movie was always going to be Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which we heard was being budgeted in the $150M range. That's a big number in today's market. But the franchise's record speaks for itself. The movies deliver and Lionsgate is gathering a strong cast for the latest installment, with Ralph Fiennes the latest addition as villainous President Coriolanus Snow, joining Joseph Zada, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor and Ben Wang. There's plenty of youth appeal, you'd think. Germany, we've heard from multiple sources, has an ask of north of $20M. That's pretty much a record single international territory ask. One German source even told us it was closer to $30M. In both instances the deal would come with other movies in the package. Chris Pine actioner Run The Night and John Wick spinoff Caine were two rumoured to be part of any deal. Lionsgate declined to comment. Not that the ask will be the final purchase price, but who could afford close to that? Leonine took the last Hunger Games movie and is the natural answer. The company has done package deals with Lionsgate before. That's where most bets are that the movie lands in Germany. Could Amazon pick up multiple markets? That might put indie noses out of joint. It seems unlikely that Constantin would pay that price at the moment. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire made $43M in Germany in 2013. Multiple other movies in the franchise have made $20M in the market, including the last installment. There's clearly an appetite. There are other big asks. Italy we heard was in the $7.5M range, Scandinavia in the $3-4M range, Middle East North Africa around $2M. All those are at the high end for asks in those markets so have generated plenty of chatter. It'll be fascinating to see how the project is put together at such a budget in this climate. Maybe the budget will come down. We'll see. Ultimately, it's good for indie buyers to have a shot at a tried and tested franchise. Many are taken off the table by streamers and studios.
