Maycee Barber: ‘I owe an apology' to UFC after seizure, late dropout

June 2 - In an Instagram post Sunday, Maycee Barber commented on the last-minute cancellation of her UFC Fight Night main event against Erin Blanchfield due to a medical event. Barber did not confirm in her post that she suffered a seizure, but a video showed her being wheeled out of the arena on a stretcher. One of the photos she posted displayed her with medical sensors attached across her body. "Not what I had planned for a Sunday post," Barber wrote. "Thank you to everyone for the prayers & support I owe an apology to @ufc @mickmaynard2 @danawhite @seanshelby & @blanchfield_mma." In an interview with ESPN, Blanchfield said she was waiting for her walkout music Saturday night at UFC Vegas 107 when UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell told her backstage that Barber was medically unfit to fight. "No one said anything until Hunter came in and told me she was having a seizure and that she wouldn't be able to compete," Blanchfield said. Blanchfield blasted Barber, who had missed weight by half a pound the previous day. "She needs to look at another division," Blanchfield said. "She needs to fix her life. She needs to just fix herself. I think she's a complete mess in every aspect of her entire life." Barber, in her social media post, acknowledged Blanchfield's dig. "PS my life is not messy this is just a bad hand," Barber wrote. "We will get to the bottom of it all and be back." Barber was attempting to compete in a UFC fight for the first time since March 2024, in part due to other health scares. She was hospitalized for nine days in 2024 due to a combination of pneumonia, strep throat and a staph infection. Barber vs. Blanchfield was billed as a fight between top-five flyweight contenders. Blanchfield told ESPN she would not consider accepting another fight with Barber. --Field Level Media

UFC's Erin Blanchfield rips Maycee Barber after opponent pulls out of fight over reported medical issue

Erin Blanchfield was set to fight Maycee Barber in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas over the weekend, but the bout was canceled moments before the bell was set to ring. Barber, who competes in the women's flyweight division, hadn't fought since March 2024 because of an illness that she said led to a near-two-week hospital stay. Barber missed weight on Friday by a half pound and was already set to give up 20% of her purse to Blanchfield, according to ESPN. Things took another strange twist Saturday night. Blanchfield said in the post-UFC Fight Night press conference that UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell told her Barber suffered a seizure minutes before she was set to walk to the Octagon, according to MMA Junkie. ESPN broadcasters said Barber suffered a medical issue. "I feel like I'm still in pretty much disbelief right now," Blanchfield added, via MMA Junkie. "I feel like I was in disbelief yesterday when she missed weight because we knew about this fight since January. You could've been 50 pounds overweight and still missed weight. "So, she missed weight, then she gets to Saturday. She gets to the locker room. I'm fully ready to go. She's supposed to be ready to go. Supposedly now she has all these health issues right when we're supposed to fight. I think it's pretty crazy. I think it's pretty unprofessional. I wouldn't want to fight her again." Barber posted and re-shared videos on her Instagram page hyping up her return to the Octagon. But she did not address any alleged medical issues on social media. Fox News Digital reached out to the UFC for comment. Blanchfield was asked if she had advice for Barber. "I don't know, she needs to look at another division," she said. "She needs to fix her life. She just needs to fix herself. I think she's a complete mess in every aspect of her entire life." Blanchfield is 13-2 in her MMA career. She defeated Rose Namajunas in November via unanimous decision. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

UFC main event cancelled just moments before the first bell as fighter is rushed to hospital

A UFC main event was cancelled just minutes before it was scheduled to take place on Saturday night. The world's largest MMA promotion hosted a UFC on ESPN card from the promotion's Apex hub. The main event was set to see women's flyweight prospects Maycee Barber and Erin Blanchfield do battle over five rounds with the winner expected to stake their claim for a title shot. However, after the pre-fight promotional video was broadcast to viewers at home the commentators announced that Barber was 'not ready' to make the walk to the Octagon, before subsequently revealing that the fight had been cancelled. Blanchfield later claimed that Barber had suffered a seizure minutes before the fight was set to take place, with reports suggesting she had been taken to hospital. 'Hunter [Campbell - UFC executive] came in and was saying that she was having a seizure and having medical issues and that she's not going to be able to fight,' Blanchfield said. 'I knew once I saw him that it wasn't something good, because he was being serious.' 'I'm just in a little bit of disbelief. We were already told six minutes until workouts, I had already warmed up and hit pads. I was literally ready to go - then we got the news.' The fight had been set to mark Barber's return to action, more than a year since she had extended her win streak to six by defeating Katlyn Cerminara at UFC 299. Since then however, the 14-2 star had been dealing with ongoing health issues that had delayed her comeback. On Friday, the 27-year-old missed weight for the flyweight contest, tipping the scales at 126.5lbs, half a pound over the non-title limit for the weight class. Prior to the ultimately cancelled return, UFC commentator Laura Sanko commented on Barber's recent struggles. 'I can't emphasise how much she's been battling with her health this last year,' she said. 'We don't know what happened, but clearly it was something serious enough where she's not cleared.'

UFC Vegas 107 main event canceled after Maycee Barber suffers possible seizure minutes before fight

Maycee Barber's main-event fight against Erin Blanchfield was canceled at the last possible moment. (Mike Roach/Zuffa LLC) The main event of the UFC Vegas 107 card was canceled at the last possible moment. Maycee Barber and Erin Blanchfield were set to face off in a clash of ranked flyweights Saturday in Las Vegas, to the point that the ESPN stream aired their pre-fight feature with interviews from both fighters. Once the video was done, a somber booth of broadcasters explained Barber wasn't ready to fight. Advertisement One commercial break later, they announced the fight had been canceled due to a "last-minute medical issue" for Barber, who couldn't receive medical clearance to enter the Octagon. Blanchfield later said in an interview that UFC executive Hunter Campbell told her Barber had suffered a seizure. Blanchfield added she was "a little in disbelief" before explaining just how late the fight was called: "We were told six minutes to the walkout. We already warmed up, I had pads, I was warming up with my training partner. I was literally ready to go. I feel like I could already smell the cage. I was ready, and then we just got the news." The day before the fight, Barber missed weight by a half-pound and was forced to forfeit 20% of her purse to Blanchfield, part of a host of weight-related issues on the card. Blanchfield had said repeatedly this week she was skeptical Barber would even make the fight, but admitted Saturday she thought they were in the clear once Barber reached the scales. When asked if she would entertain a new fight date against Barber, she quickly shot it down: "No, my coaches right away were like, 'Don't entertain her, she's not on your level, super unprofessional.'" Advertisement Barber entered the bout on a six-fight win streak, while Blanchfield was coming off a rebound win over former champion Rose Namajunas after suffering her first UFC loss to Manon Fiorot in March 2024. Both fighters are ranked in the top five of the UFC's women's flyweight division and would have been a step closer to a title shot with a win. Blanchfield indicated she would like a new fight set up against a different top-five opponent. It's unclear what Barber will be able to do in the short term.
