Sudanese student stabbed to death in Phagwara while protecting women students from harassers: police

Two Sudanese students of a private university in Punjab's Phagwara district were attacked with knives by other students of the university in the early hours of Thursday, leading to the death of one of the duo, police said. The incident took place around 4 am in the Green Valley area near Law Gate in Maheru village — a locality known for housing international students, particularly those from African countries. The Satnampura police identified the deceased as Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed, 25, and the injured student as Ahmed Mohammad Nour Ahmed Hussen. From his hospital bed, Hussen provided the police with the names of the six alleged attackers–Abdul Ahadh from Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka, and Kuwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoib, Sushank alias Shaggy, and Yash Vardhan Rajput–all reportedly hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and paying guests in Phagwara. Hussen told the police that he and Ahmed were returning from the morning prayer along with two women students (both Sudanese) when a group of men started harassing the women asking for their contact details. When the duo tried to stop the men, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol, they turned violent and started stabbing them, the police said. The men attacked both of them in the chest and other parts of the body and fled when a local, Prabhat Dubey, came to help the victims after hearing their screams. When rushed to Johal Hospital in Jalandhar's Rama Mandi area, Ahmed was declared dead on arrival and Hussen was in critical condition. Within hours of the crime, the police arrested the six men from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on charges under sections 109 (common intention), 103(1) (murder), 190 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 191(3) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Prabhjot Singh Virk confirmed the arrests. It is learnt that CCTV camera footage helped the police trace all the accused. The investigation was led by Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, Superintendent of Police, Phagwara; Virk; and their teams. Students from African countries are in shock, with one of them telling The Indian Express they were worried about their security. The police must enhance patrolling in their area, as a large number of students live there, the student added. The police are investigating whether there was any previous enmity between the two groups of students.

PI Gudlar arrested in meat bribery scandal

Panaji: The directorate of vigilance's anti-corruption branch (ACB) on Tuesday arrested PI Sunil Gudlar and constable Mohammad Hussen Haryar, both of the Konkan Railway police station, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a meat trader from Belagavi. Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that action would be taken against those police personnel involved in corruption. 'He (Gudlar) will be permanently out of the service,' said Sawant. A meat trader approached the ACB on Monday, filed a complaint, and provided a voice recording of a conversation between Hussen and him regarding the demand for a bribe. ACB SP Nelson Albuquerque said, 'We received the complaint on April 21 that there was a demand for Rs 2 lakh and a monthly payment of Rs 25,000 to be paid to the Konkan Railway PI.' Albuquerque said that the demand was conveyed through Hussen. 'Accordingly, we registered the complaint by going through the transcript recorded by the complainant. Then, we laid a trap and caught both the people red-handed with the advance amount received by them for Rs 25,000. Accordingly, both have been arrested. The transaction took place in the office of the PI.' Albuquerque said that they would move an application to place the PI and constable under suspension. Albuquerque said that the complainant has a licence to supply goat meat. 'All the transcriptions recorded by us before the trap and after the trap was by Hussen. At the time of the receipt of the money, Gudlar's voice and conversation were also recorded,' said the SP. On March 30, Konkan Railway police seized over 347kg of abandoned red meat, which was declared as goat meat worth over Rs 1 lakh, transported from Belagavi to Goa through a parcel on the Goa Express. The ACB said that an FIR was registered against an unknown person, and Konkan Railway police contacted the complainant and told him that the abandoned meat belonged to him, and they would arrest him. The ACB said that the complainant tried to convince the Konkan Railway police that he stopped trading in beef and only dealt with goat meat. The ACB stated that even after making it clear that it was not his consignment, Konkan Railway police personnel continued to be in touch with the complainant and asked him to come and meet them. 'They convinced the complainant that they would not take any action against him if he paid Rs 2 lakh to settle the case. They told the complainant that he would fix Rs 25,000 per month so that he could continue transporting meat to Goa without any hurdles. They told the meat trader that they had fixed a similar amount for other meat traders,' a senior ACB officer said. The ACB said that the complainant initially agreed with them and decided to meet them, but considering the long weekend, he convinced them that he would come to the police station on Monday. The ACB mentioned that the complainant was scared that Konkan Railway police might arrest him in connection with the abandoned meat case, and when he learned about the ACB, he decided to approach them for relief. In 2011, the CBI arrested Gudlar, then an anti-narcotics cell PSI, in connection with the police-politician-drug mafia nexus. The CBI then filed a chargesheet against him for corruption charges, and a local court acquitted him of corruption charges in the case of the infamous Israeli drug dealer David Driham alias Dudu. Gudlar was caught on camera selling drugs to foreign women. The allegation was that Gudlar demanded and accepted illegal gratification and valuables from Ayala Driham, Dudu's sister.
