Sudanese student stabbed to death in Phagwara while protecting women students from harassers: police
The incident took place around 4 am in the Green Valley area near Law Gate in Maheru village — a locality known for housing international students, particularly those from African countries. The Satnampura police identified the deceased as Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed, 25, and the injured student as Ahmed Mohammad Nour Ahmed Hussen.
From his hospital bed, Hussen provided the police with the names of the six alleged attackers–Abdul Ahadh from Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka, and Kuwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoib, Sushank alias Shaggy, and Yash Vardhan Rajput–all reportedly hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and paying guests in Phagwara.
Hussen told the police that he and Ahmed were returning from the morning prayer along with two women students (both Sudanese) when a group of men started harassing the women asking for their contact details.
When the duo tried to stop the men, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol, they turned violent and started stabbing them, the police said. The men attacked both of them in the chest and other parts of the body and fled when a local, Prabhat Dubey, came to help the victims after hearing their screams.
When rushed to Johal Hospital in Jalandhar's Rama Mandi area, Ahmed was declared dead on arrival and Hussen was in critical condition.
Within hours of the crime, the police arrested the six men from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on charges under sections 109 (common intention), 103(1) (murder), 190 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 191(3) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Prabhjot Singh Virk confirmed the arrests. It is learnt that CCTV camera footage helped the police trace all the accused. The investigation was led by Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, Superintendent of Police, Phagwara; Virk; and their teams.
Students from African countries are in shock, with one of them telling The Indian Express they were worried about their security. The police must enhance patrolling in their area, as a large number of students live there, the student added.
The police are investigating whether there was any previous enmity between the two groups of students.

With the help of the Mane Manege initiative, the Electronics City police unearthed an inter-State drug racket and arrested two Congolese nationals and recovered 2.15 kg of MDMA crystals worth ₹5 crore from them. The accused, identified as Joel Kabong, 28, an MBA dropout and an alleged full-time peddler, used to source the drugs from his contacts in Delhi and sell them to his customers, a majority of whom private firm employees and college students. The racket came to light when the police who were part of the Mane Manege initiative, got a tip-off about African nationals operating in the area suspiciously. The police team in mufti kept a watch on the accused for two weeks before zeroing in on him, officials said . The police said they recovered 110g of MDMA along with an electronic weighing machine and a few plastic pouches from him. He was taken into custody, and based on the details provided by him, police arrested his partner, Joy Sunday, 22, a resident of Vidyaranyapura. Probe revealed that Joy used to take orders from customers and send Joel to deliver the drugs, the police said. Joy's husband, identified as Angolano, 30, who is also part of the network is presently on the run, the police said. The accused have been operating in the city for many years, having links with a Delhi-based network to get supplies, Mr. Narayana said . Joel had acted in a Kannada movie, Bheema, in a side role as a peddler and addict, police officials said. A special team has been formed to track down the other accused . In a separate incident, the CCB officials arrested D'Costa John, 36, from Senegal, and recovered 255g of MDMA worth ₹40 lakh from him. The accused, according to the police, came to the city in 2024 on a tourist visa and started peddling drugs.

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Online Gaming Bill, which aims to regulate betting apps and put strict checks on gambling, sources Bill seeks to bring online gaming platforms under a legal framework and introduce penalties for gambling through digital apps. Woman, lover nabbed for killing husband in Rajasthan; body found in blue drum
Last Updated: Jaipur, Aug 19 (PTI) A woman and her lover were arrested in connection with the murder of her husband in Kheirathal Tijara district here, police said on Tuesday. Laxmi Devi, the wife of Hansram, and her lover Jitendra Sharma, the son of the married couple's landlord, were nabbed Monday night, they said. The two, who had decamped after dumping Hansram's body in a plastic tank, confessed to the crime during questioning, police said. The incident that took place in the Kishangarhbas Police Station area came to light on Sunday. Superintendent of Police Manish Chaudhary said the two were detained from a brick kiln in Alwada village of Alwar district. 'Initial investigations indicate that Laxmi and Jitendra plotted the murder in a bid to conceal their affair. The victim, Hansram, was killed on the night of August 15. The body was later found inside a blue plastic drum on the roof of their rented accommodation," he said. Laxmi had borrowed the drum from her landlord, saying she needed it to store water. The couple's three children, whom Laxmi and Jitendra had taken away with them, were restored to their grandfather, the SP said.
