Sudanese student stabbed to death in Phagwara while protecting women students from harassers: police
Two Sudanese students of a private university in Punjab's Phagwara district were attacked with knives by other students of the university in the early hours of Thursday, leading to the death of one of the duo, police said.
The incident took place around 4 am in the Green Valley area near Law Gate in Maheru village — a locality known for housing international students, particularly those from African countries. The Satnampura police identified the deceased as Mohammad Wada Bala Yousuf Ahmed, 25, and the injured student as Ahmed Mohammad Nour Ahmed Hussen.
From his hospital bed, Hussen provided the police with the names of the six alleged attackers–Abdul Ahadh from Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka, and Kuwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoib, Sushank alias Shaggy, and Yash Vardhan Rajput–all reportedly hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and paying guests in Phagwara.
Hussen told the police that he and Ahmed were returning from the morning prayer along with two women students (both Sudanese) when a group of men started harassing the women asking for their contact details.
When the duo tried to stop the men, who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol, they turned violent and started stabbing them, the police said. The men attacked both of them in the chest and other parts of the body and fled when a local, Prabhat Dubey, came to help the victims after hearing their screams.
When rushed to Johal Hospital in Jalandhar's Rama Mandi area, Ahmed was declared dead on arrival and Hussen was in critical condition.
Within hours of the crime, the police arrested the six men from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on charges under sections 109 (common intention), 103(1) (murder), 190 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 191(3) (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Prabhjot Singh Virk confirmed the arrests. It is learnt that CCTV camera footage helped the police trace all the accused. The investigation was led by Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, Superintendent of Police, Phagwara; Virk; and their teams.
Students from African countries are in shock, with one of them telling The Indian Express they were worried about their security. The police must enhance patrolling in their area, as a large number of students live there, the student added.
The police are investigating whether there was any previous enmity between the two groups of students.

RCB fully responsible for stampede, K'taka govt tells high court
The Karnataka government on Wednesday told the High Court that IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bore full responsibility for the deadly stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which left 11 people dead and several others injured. Opposing the bail plea of RCB's head of marketing, Nikhil Sosale, who was arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on June 6, the state submitted that RCB's last-minute social media posts, including announcements about free passes and open invitations to the team's victory celebration, triggered the massive and unmanageable crowd buildup. The submissions were made before Justice SR Krishna Kumar, who has reserved orders on Sosale's bail application and is expected to pronounce the verdict on June 12. Terming the entire celebration 'illegal,' the government argued that RCB neither sought the requisite permissions nor implemented necessary safety measures to manage an event that ultimately drew lakhs of people. 'There was no permission taken. What they submitted was an intimation—not a formal request seeking approval,' Advocate General (AG) Shashi Kiran Shetty told the court. 'They tweeted to the world, inviting lakhs of fans without specifying who could enter or what protocols applied. The entire event violated legal norms,' he added. The AG cited multiple posts made from RCB's official handle on X (formerly Twitter) between 11:30 pm on June 3 and 8:55 am on June 4. These posts announced a victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium but offered no details on ticketing, crowd control, or security arrangements. When Justice Kumar asked whether the state's position was that RCB was 'completely responsible,' the AG replied: 'Yes. They have tried to shift the blame to the State, but the entire responsibility lies with them. The event was illegal under the Karnataka Police Act and Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with disobedience to lawful orders. This has criminal consequences.' Defending Sosale, senior advocate Sandesh Chouta argued that the marketing head was being unfairly targeted. 'He is merely an employee, not a decision-maker. He cannot be held vicariously liable for actions taken by the company,' Chouta told the court. Chouta also pointed out that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had publicly invited people to the event, but the AG refuted this claim. When the bench sought clarity on Sosale's personal responsibility, Justice Kumar observed: 'He is not even a director; just a marketing official. You cannot conflate the company with the individual. Show us a document where it's his responsibility to seek permission.' In response, the AG cited a tri-partite agreement between RCB, BCCI and KSCA to underline RCB's obligations but admitted that the document did not directly implicate Sosale. However, Shetty maintained: 'We have identified the right person for arrest based on the investigation so far.' Chouta further argued that the arrest was procedurally flawed, pointing out that it took place on June 6, even though the investigation had been officially transferred to the CID on June 5. The AG, however, countered that local police were well within their rights to act until the handover was formally completed and insisted the arrest was lawful. Sosale has also challenged the legality of his arrest, alleging that it was carried out at the behest of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah -- an act he contends exceeds the CM's constitutional authority in criminal investigations.

Man's mother kidnapped, assaulted by 11 of wife's relatives
Surat: A middle-aged woman was kidnapped and beaten unconscious in the Pal area of the city by seven men and four women — relatives of the woman her son married and eloped with. The victim's younger sister, Asha Makwana (44), filed an FIR at Pal police station against the eleven accused persons for kidnapping, assault and criminal intimidation. Makwana said her elder sister, Sumita, lives with her two sons and daughter. Sumita's son, Aniket (23), married Naina Od in court on June 1, 2024. After staying at their own houses for a few months, the two eloped and began living together. They presented themselves at Rander police station on May 28, declaring that they were married and would live together. After that, Naina began staying at Aniket's house. On June 10, Sumita's son Vansh called Makwana saying his mother had been kidnapped in a car from near Care and Cure Hospital on Gaurav Path. Another relative, who lives in Ambikanagar Society, called to say that Sumita was being assaulted by members of Naina's family. Makwana rushed to the spot with some relatives and found the accused assaulting Sumita. They included Naina's relatives Rajesh, Jagdish, Dipak, Jatin, Nikhil, Sahil, Shubham, Urmila, Usha, Rekha and Vasanti. Makwana said Jatin and Nikhil were hitting Sumita with sticks while Rajesh was using a plastic pipe. She added that the women were hitting Sumita in her private parts. Vasanti was screaming that Sumita would be burned with kerosene. After Makwana called 181 and 108, paramedics arrived and took an unconscious Sumita to hospital. Pal police inspector K L Gaadhe told TOI: "We have arrested the seven men; they are between 18 and 48 years old. We have booked them for kidnapping, criminal intimidation and other offences under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 140 (4), 189 (2), 190, 351 (3) and 54 and Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act. Fake police steal gold worth 6L from elderly woman
1 2 Pune: Two conmen, posing as police personnel, stole gold jewellery worth Rs6.24 lakh from an elderly woman in Warje after telling her to remove it for her safety. Under the pretext of helping her keep the jewellery safely in her handbag, the duo diverted the woman's attention and fled. The incident occurred at Warje on Tuesday around 5.30pm when the woman was on her way to a temple in the area. The woman later approached the Warje Malwadi police and lodged a complaint. The police registered a case under sections 204 (personating a public servant) and 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An officer from the Warje Malwadi police told TOI that on Tuesday evening, the woman, aged 61, was walking towards a temple near her house to offer prayers. "While walking on the footpath, a man approached her and told her one person was calling her. There was another man standing near the entrance of a hall along the road," the officer said. He said that the duo told the woman that they were police constables. The duo also told the woman that a murder happened in the area and she should remove her gold jewellery for safety. "Believing them, the woman removed her four gold bangles, gold chain, and Mangalsutra, all collectively worth Rs6.24 lakh. She was trying to keep it in her small purse. As the bangles were not fitting in the purse, the duo offered her help to keep it 'safe' in her bag," he said. The officer said that one of them took the purse and bangles from the woman's hand, pretended to keep it in the bag, and left. "The woman then went to the temple. When she checked her bag, she did not find her purse and the jewellery. She realised that she was duped and came to us," the officer said. He said that the police have collected the CCTV footage from the area. "Our investigations are on," he said.
