People are getting the ick after discovering what 'Hyrox' stands for

The world can be split into two camps: those that love Hyrox, and those who would rather do literally anything else. The fitness challenge is not for the faint-hearted. It sees competitors run an 8km race, split up by eight fitness stations where you complete functional movements, such as burpees, sled pulls and wall balls. You can compete alone, in a pair, or group, or if you need an even bigger challenge (because apparently it's just not hard enough already) you can do it all while wearing a weighted vest. While it might sound like hell to some, Hyrox is incredibly popular. The German founded company now holds events across the world. According to their website, some races see 8,000 people participate and 10,000 watch, making it the largest mass participation fitness event in the world. Hyrox challengers love nothing more than posting a sweaty selfie of themselves post race (and who can blame them) but this latest discovery has seen some proclaiming on social media that they've got the ick. Taking to TikTok, PT Ella Rose, who goes by @tattooedgymgirl shared that Hyrox is actually a portmanteau of two words. 'Don't get me wrong, I don't want to do a Hyrox, they look really hard, hats off to you if you've done one, but this makes me want to do one even f*cking less. Hyrox is short for Hybrid Rockstar.' In between chuckles, Ella said 'I've got the ick' adding: 'Any video I see of Hyrox from now on I'm just going to cringe.' The video has amassed over 280,000 views, with comments equally disturbed by the information. 'I thought it looked pretty cool until you said that,' wrote commenter. While another added: 'That made me unwell.' Other creators have posted similar comments, equally shocked to discover the meaning. Online coach Harry, who goes by @regurgent_harry on TikTok, posted a video, calling the new-found meaning 'the biggest ick ever'. In an interview on the Head Start podcast back in February 2023, Hyrox Chief Growth Office, Douglas Gremmen, explained: 'Christian and Mo [Hyrox founders] wanted to do something with the name 'rockstars'. They really felt that people who have come across the finish line are rockstars.' More Trending Unfortunately, as Red Bull sponsors Hyrox, they were against using the full word Rockstar, as it's the name of a competing energy drink. So instead, the founders chose the name Curox, inspired by the Latin word 'curr' which means 'to run', along with their word of choice, 'rockstar'. However, they ran intro trouble again due a trademark infringement, which led to the need for a name change, and they opted for Hyrox instead. 'They literally tried to figure out the best two letters to come before ROX,' says Christian. Considering that Hyrox is a form of hybrid training, Christian added that 'HYROX became a natural extension'. View More » 'I think is a great name,' he added. 'It's universal. It's global.' It turns out the brand name Durex has a hidden meaning. The iconic name is actually a portmanteau of three words: durable, reliable and excellent. It seems pretty self-explanatory and it does what it says on the tin (thank goodness) but we'd never realised the true meaning. And it's not the only acronym out there that we use on the daily. In fact, there are words you probably never knew were an abbreviation. Read our full list here. Do you have a story to share? Fitness fanatics are only just realising what HYROX stands for

Fitness competition HYROX has become highly popular years – but have you ever stopped to think about what it stands for? The truth has left some cringing Hyrox is a global fitness racing competition that combines functional fitness and endurance. It is often described as a fitness race for "every body," designed to test participants' strength, power, speed, and endurance. The event format combines running with functional fitness exercises, making it appealing to a wide range of competitors – from trained athletes to recreational individuals. Hyrox is structured as a set course, where participants complete 8 kilometers of running (divided into 1 km loops) interspersed with 8 functional fitness stations. Athletes must complete a fitness station immediately after each kilometer of running. The goal is to finish the entire course as quickly as possible, and the results are ranked based on performance. ‌ One of the unique aspects of Hyrox is that it welcomes athletes from a wide variety of fitness disciplines, including runners, CrossFitters, gym-goers, and functional fitness enthusiasts. However, you must be over the age of 16 to participate. ‌ But what does Hyrox actually stand for? One fitness fan recently took a closer look at the name HYROX, and jokingly said finding out what it actually stood for made him "want to puke". Taking to TikTok, online fitness coach Harry Mackarness revealed that HYROX stands for Hybrid Rockstar. In the caption of the video, he wrote: "HYROX - Huge fan of hybrid training, been doing it my whole life and coach in that way too - but finding out that HYROX means Hybrid Rockstar makes me want to puke. Can't unhear that now." In response, one commenter said: "Is that true? Oh lawd." Another remarked: "HAHAHAHHA I could've gone my whole life without knowing that." A third commented: "I'm just going to forget you ever said that." But others didn't see a problem with the name. One asked: "What's wrong with that? Sounds quite cool." And another argued: "I like it, it's fun."

People are only just realising what HYROX stands for and joke it makes them 'want to puke'

Fitness competition HYROX has boomed in popularity over the last few years, but some people are only just now realising what it stands for - and it's giving them the 'ick' Fitness fans have been getting the 'ick' after realising what HYROX actually stands for. HYROX is a fitness competition which has gained international popularity in recent times. It's designed to test the participants' strength, endurance and overall fitness. ‌ The event itself is a circuit-style race, consisting of eight functional movement stations, as well as 1km of running before each. HYROX can either be completed individually or with a partner, and you don't need any fitness qualifications - you just need to be at least 16 years old. ‌ One fitness fan recently took a closer look at the name HYROX, and jokingly said finding out what it actually stood for made him "want to puke". Can't unhear that now." In the comment section people were equally baffled after only just realising what HYROX stands for. "Is that true? Oh lawd," said one person. "HAHAHAHHA I could've gone my whole life without knowing that," commented another. "I'm just going to forget you ever said that," added a third. However, others don't mind the name at all. "Wha"'s wrong with that? Sounds quite cool," commented one person. "I like it, it's fun," said another. HYROX was launched in Germany in 2017 and quickly established itself as the fastest growing fitness sport in the world. Now fitness competitions take place in 11 countries in over 30 different cities. ‌ It was created by founders Christian Toetzke and three-times Olympic Medallist and World Champion Moritz Furste. Toetzke wanted to create a strength and endurance event that would be open to everyone. Speaking to The Hybrid Letter, he explained: "I wanted to create a sport based on exciting competitions with the most fun and the most variety. I did research. There are 200 million or more people who are going to the gym three or four days a week or more. When you ask people: what's your sport? Over 50% say 'fitness.' Every other sport has gamification, benchmarking, and competition. So we thought there must be a way to create a competition that is exactly designed for these millions of people. "This is a group of people, I believe, that is as big as the running community. We really believe this is the healthiest way of training." As well as a 1km run before each exercise, participants do 1km on a standing ski machine, 50m of sled push, 50m sled pull, 80m burpee jumps, 1km indoor rowing, carrying a kettlebell 200m, 100m lunges carrying a sandbag, as well as 100 throws and catches of a medicine ball off a wall.
