Religious leaders oppose women's I-Day marathon
The leaders from various religious parties of Hyderabad have expressed strong concern over the planned women's marathon to mark Independence Day, demanding that the Sindh government and district administration withdraw the decision. Speaking at a joint press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club, they warned that if the event is not cancelled, they will go to any extent to stop it. The press conference was addressed by Jamaat-e-Islami district chief Hafiz Tahir Majeed, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Taj Muhammad Nahiyon, JUP central vice president Nazim Ali Arain, Shia Ulema Council leader Syed Moazzam Shah Jehanian, Central Muslim League's Umar Farooq, Tehreek Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nubuwwat's Saif-ur-Rehman, and others. They said Pakistan was founded in the name of Islam, which strictly prescribes modesty for women, and that a public women's marathon was not only un-Islamic but also against Sharia.

Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattareya urges BCs to unite and work towards achieving political power
Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Monday stressed the urgent need to address social inequalities, calling them more dangerous than economic ones. Speaking at the launch of Bahujanaganamana, a long poem by renowned Telugu poet and former Telangana Sahitya Akademi chairman Juluru Gowri Shankar, he urged Backward Classes (BCs) to unite and work towards achieving political power. The event was held at the Hyderabad Press Club. Dattatreya also noted that the Central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has decided to conduct a nationwide caste census along with the next population census — a long-standing demand of BC communities. 'This will pave the way for their political empowerment,' he said. He urged for BC ideology to be widely disseminated and said Bahujanaganamana should reach every village to help the younger generation understand its significance. Speakers praised the poem for blending philosophical depth with verse, addressing key issues like the caste census, BCs' socio-economic status and legal rights. They described it as a powerful ideological text and a 'new epic' for India, serving as a tool for empowerment and social justice. The event was presided over by former Media Academy chairman Allam Narayana. Other speakers included former High Court judge Chandrakumar, retired IAS officer Chiranjeevulu, BC Welfare Association national president Jajula Srinivas Goud, writer Jwalitha, former professor Tirumali, literary critic Sangisetty Srinivas and Hyderabad Press Club general secretary R. Ravikanth Reddy.

Seminar focuses on population challenges
HYDERABAD: In connection with World Population Day, a seminar was organized by the District Population Office Hyderabad at Hyderabad Press Club. The event aimed to highlight key issues including the challenges posed by rapid population growth, the importance of education, health and employment opportunities for youth, women's reproductive health, family planning, and prevention of child marriage, pre-marital counselling, and the integration of reproductive rights awareness into the educational curriculum. Speakers emphasized that over 65% of Pakistan's population comprises youth, and empowering them with knowledge and opportunities is essential for the country's progress. The seminar highlighted that unchecked population growth puts immense pressure on national resources, and public awareness is vital to tackle this challenge. Pakistan's current Total Fertility Rate (TFR) stands at 3.6, while the target is to bring it down to 2.6. It was noted that family planning is not only essential for the health and well-being of parents and children but is also critical for national development. The need to promote gender equality, reproductive rights, pre-marital counselling, and involvement of religious and community leaders was stressed to ensure a balanced and healthy family system. The role of the media in sensitizing the public was also deemed crucial. Pakistan: One killed, dozens injured after police action on anti-canal protestors in Sindh
One person died and several others were injured after police resorted to a baton charge and reportedly opened fire to disperse anti-canal demonstrators in Pakistan's Sindh province, local media reported. The unrest erupted in the city of Moro, in Sindh's Naushahro Feroze district, where protesters, demonstrating against the construction of proposed canals over the Indus River, had blocked the motorway bypass road. Police, attempting to restore traffic, prompted the use of force. As the situation escalated, reports of gunfire added to the chaos, according to local media. Amid the crackdown, a planned roundtable conference by the Sindhi nationalist organisation Sindh Sabha was thwarted following a heavy deployment of security forces and road blockades near the Hyderabad Press Club, as reported by The Express Tribune. Police detained several individuals, and multiple Sindh Sabha leaders were confined within the conference hall. The group later confirmed that a team of lawyers intervened and safely escorted their leaders out of the premises. Sindh Sabha, which has long raised its voice against the enforced disappearances of Sindhi nationalist activists, had organised the conference under the theme "Let's Join Hands to Take Steps for the Survival of Our Natural Homeland Sindh." The event was meant to gather various nationalist parties to strategise against the exploitation of Sindh's natural resources by the Sharif-led government. Local media, Dawn, reported that over four dozen activists affiliated with the Sindh Sabha Party, led by Ashfaq Malik, had initiated the road blockade to protest against corporate farming and the construction of canals as part of the controversial Cholistan project. The Cholistan irrigation project, inaugurated on February 15, has sparked widespread unrest in Sindh, where residents fear it will divert precious water resources from the Indus River to benefit agricultural lands in South Punjab. In March, the Sindh Assembly passed a unanimous resolution opposing the initiative, echoing long-standing regional concerns. In recent months, several political factions, including the ruling coalition's key partner PPP, have staged protests demanding the project's cancellation. Public opposition has intensified following what many see as the federal government's disregard for Sindh's water rights. The situation has been further complicated by the diplomatic fallout between India and Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed by four heavily armed terrorists, two of whom were Pakistanis. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Pakistan-based terrorist organisation, Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) as part of a broader response to Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism. The Sharif government, under increasing pressure, announced last month that it would halt the canal construction until consensus was achieved through the Council of Common Interests. However, the legal fraternity in Sindh has refused to end its sit-ins across the province, demanding a formal and permanent cancellation of the Cholistan project.

Sindh Sabha barred from holding conference
Sindhi nationalist organisation — Sindh Sabha — was unable to hold a roundtable conference after deployment of a heavy contingent of police and closure of roads leading to the Hyderabad Press Club. The police took several people into custody, while several leaders of Sindh Sabha were trapped in the conference hall due to the police presence. According to Sindh Sabha, a group of lawyers reached there and escorted the Sindh Sabha leaders out of the premises. Sindh Sabha is known for its active struggle against the disappearance of Sindhi nationalist workers. It had called a roundtable conference under the title 'Let's Join Hands to Take Steps for the Survival of Our Natural Homeland Sindh'. Various nationalist parties had been invited to participate in the conference. Sindh Sabha claimed that the police arrested their leaders including Shabbir Sindhi, Raja Chandio, Waheed Mustafa, and several workers from outside the club. Police sources, however, said that only two workers of Sindh Sabha were in custody for their involvement in raising anti-Pakistan and anti-army slogans on Sunday. Sources said that the conference was also prevented due to the planned Sindh March by the newly formed nationalist party, Sindh National Congress, notorious for raising anti-Pakistan and anti-army slogans, and tearing banners related to Operation Banyanum Marsoos. Following the incident, the police registered a case against eight named and 250 unknown individuals, including men and women.
