Annual Dance Show rocking the stage at BHS on Thursday
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The normally quiet and reserved Helen Foley Theater at Binghamton High School will be rocking Thursday night as the school's dance students put on their end of year performance. The annual Dance Show is known for its high energy, professional lighting, sound and props and audience engagement. The concert features multiple styles of dance including jazz, lyrical, contemporary and hip-hop. Students from all four levels of dance that are taught as electives at the school will be featured along with selections from the school's competitive dance team. Sophomore Efrain Masso-Ramos and Senior Kamora Trevino say an entire year's worth of practice pays off when they step out onto the stage. 'We worked really hard on it. We've been working all year. Some dances we even started in the summer. We just put a lot of work and effort into them,' said Masso-Ramos. 'You learn so much here, it could open up so many opportunities outside of here from Binghamton High School dance. It has for me,' said Trevino. The competitive team will also be bringing their dances to US Tournament of Dance competitions in Syracuse and at Binghamton University this year. Thursday's Dance Show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for general admission. They can be purchased at the door or online by clicking here. Ticketing is cashless, so you will need to purchase them on your phone or online. South Central New York's Hygiene Fund Drive now collecting donations
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local nonprofit just launched the second year of its five county-wide hygiene drive. Monday was the start of the Community Foundation of South Central New York's Hygiene Fund Drive. The organization's development officer, Shawn Graham, says last year, the campaign raised nearly $10,000 dollars in just two weeks. And then, distributed grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 to 13 different organizations. One of which is this period pantry in the main vestibule of the Broome County Public Library. The pantry offers period products like tampons, pads, and diapers completely free of charge for anyone. 'If you can maintain that level of like base necessity, then it's a hand-up and not a handout. Because you're able to go out and look for jobs and present yourself in a way that employers would like,' said Graham. Graham hopes to raise more than $10,000 in this year's Hygiene Drive. It runs through April 30, and contributions can be made online by visiting SUNY Broome students win big at robotics competition OFA students get up close and personal with local livestock South Central New York's Hygiene Fund Drive now collecting donations Annual Dance Show rocking the stage at BHS on Thursday BPD body cam footage refutes homeless accusation Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. OFA students get up close and personal with local livestock
OWEGO, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Chickens, cows, bees, plants; students at Owego Free Academy got to see it all during today's Ag Career Day. OFA held its Agriculture Career Day on Tuesday, which featured live, interactive exhibits, including a petting zoo, and demonstrations from local farms and businesses. The school's animal science teacher, Derek Hill, says some of these students have never been up close and personal with livestock until today. Hill says ten different local ag businesses were at the school giving presentations to the students. 'We have so many businesses that need help and need to hire employees. And the only way we're going to do that, is trying to get our youth knowledgeable about the different areas. Ag's no longer that traditional pitchfork and farmer, we're talking about drones, clones,' said Hill. Hill says the career day was actually the students' idea and he was just happy to be facilitating. One business had newborn chicks in an incubator while another gave the students a free plant to take home and care for. The Children's Home presents at Rotary
HILLCREST, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A 112-year-old non-profit continues to grow in our area as it finds new and innovative ways to support children and their families. George Dermody, President and CEO of The Children's Home, was the guest speaker at the Binghamton Noon Rotary Club on Monday. The Children's Home maintains its headquarters at its main campus in Hillcrest but has expanded over the years to add numerous offices and programs across our region. What started as an orphanage has now grown beyond residential treatment for children with mental health and behavioral issues. Dermody says The Children's Home continues to increase its focus on in-home and community supports as the field of behavioral healthcare evolves. 'We have been developing more programs and services and opportunities to support children and families living in their own homes, to give them the skills and strength they need to remain in their communities,' said Dermody. Dermody says The Children's Home serves close to 1,000 families each year with 675 employees and growing. In 2020, it opened the Southern Tier Community Center in Endicott at the site of the former Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome in order to preserve the recreational and childcare programming that the area relied on.
