Glasgow mentor up for Mentor of the Year at UK mobility awards

Kieran Foy, who mentors at Hyndland Secondary School with the charity MCR Pathways, has been nominated for Mentor of the Year at the UK Social Mobility Awards. These awards celebrate individuals and organisations that prioritise social mobility. Kieran Foy and Russel Kerr (Image: Supplied) Kieran has mentored his young person for three years, consistently supporting his mentee and preparing him for life beyond school. He has helped with various activities, from exploring job search platforms to encouraging meetings with the school's careers advisor. He said: "I've found the experience of mentoring to be incredibly rewarding. "Once you scratch below the surface with your mentee, and get a real insight into their aspirations and how determined they can be, it's both amazing and inspiring. "I feel extremely privileged to have been nominated for the award, knowing that there's been value in the support I have contributed means a lot to me. "I do however think the most important element here isn't about me, but instead this is a real reflection of how vastly important mentoring relationships can be, and the incredible work MCR Pathways does." Kieran, who is head of compliance at SecuriGroup, has been supported by his employer to mentor with MCR Pathways. Russel Kerr, chief executive of SecuriGroup, said: "Kieran has demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment in his role as a mentor at MCR Pathways. "His ability to connect with and inspire care-experienced individuals is truly commendable. "We are thrilled to see him recognised as Mentor of the Year, as it reflects not only his hard work but also the positive impact he has made in the lives of those he supports." The charity is calling on adults to volunteer as mentors in Glasgow. Kieran said: 'Quite simply do it - don't hesitate. "You don't have to feel like you have all of the answers to put yourself forward, the most important thing you can do is be there. "Having a willingness to simply listen can make a profound difference in the life of a young person, and I have no doubt that you will find that it makes a positive difference for your own life too.'

Glasgow headteacher is only Scots winner at school awards

Louise Edgerton, headteacher at Hyndland Secondary School was crowned Headteacher of the Year (State) at the Tes School Awards in London. The event celebrtaes the UK's most inspiring schools and teachers, for the 17th time this year. Ms Edgerton said: 'I'm incredibly touched to receive this. Leading a school is never a solo effort, and I've been lucky to work alongside staff, pupils, and families who care deeply and give so much.' Commenting on the Awards, Rod Williams, CEO of Tes, explained: 'A special congratulations to all the winners and finalists at this year's Tes Schools Awards. "The remarkable achievements of state and independent schools, teachers, and trusts that were celebrated this evening are a powerful demonstration of the excellence and dedication driving UK education.' The Tes Schools Awards, which have been dubbed the 'Oscars of education', is a prestigious awards programme which celebrates the best of education across the UK. The awards recognise the very best teachers and schools from UK state and independent schools, across early years settings, primary and secondary. The schools and teachers they chose showcase the best of UK education within 22 award categories, covering all areas of school education. The categories for the schools shortlisted in Scotland included Headteacher of the Year (State) (Louise Edgerton – Hyndland Secondary School, Glasgow), Pupil Mental Health Initiative of the Year (Firrhill High School, Midlothian), Secondary School of the Year (Hyndland Secondary School, Glasgow), Subject Lead of the Year (Secondary) (Ian Vosser - Braes High School, Falkirk).
