CarPlay Evolves with iOS 26: All the New Features Explained
According to Apple, its CarPlay feature is being used worldwide 600 million times a day (except in some American vehicles). It has evolved from being a bonus feature for vehicle-owning iPhone users into an essential feature for car drivers with updates to the system coming with every major iOS rollout. During its keynote at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in Cupertino, California, several updates were revealed for the newly minted iOS 26. An evolved version of the Apple CarPlay was also shown, and here's a brief breakdown of every crucial new feature, including the brand-new CarPlay Ultra. Chief among the Apple CarPlay updates that go with the iOS 26 is the system-wide refreshed visual design, featuring icons that adapt seamlessly to light and dark modes. Those who receive a call while on the road will see a compact display, allowing users to continue seeing screen content like navigation while taking calls. Apple also introduced Tapbacks for messages, which are instant emoji-style reactions to messages, presumably so the driver won't have to take their eyes off the road. Pinned conversations are also available for quick access while driving. Meanwhile, Apple also added widgets to CarPlay, which are designed to be quick, glanceable, and informative without distracting the driver. These widgets also employ live updates to help drivers stay informed of important activities (e.g., a friend's flight status), without losing focus on the tiller. These Apple CarPlay updates are expected to go live as soon as iOS 26 rolls out to users this fall. The tech company didn't disclose an exact date for the public launch of the new system, but a public beta is expected to roll out in July, according to reports. Apart from the generic Apple CarPlay, the company also reintroduced CarPlay Ultra, which was announced last month. The new system is touted as the "ultimate" CarPlay experience, offering a unified, consistent interface across all driver-facing screens in the vehicle. Customizable layout and design of dashboard information are among the key features of CarPlay Ultra, adding vehicle controls such as radio and climate settings directly within CarPlay. Apple said that this is just the beginning, as more features are coming for CarPlay Ultra. Aston Martin vehicles were the first to get the CarPlay Ultra upgrade, with the DBX and Vantage, among others, getting first dibs on the feature. The tech giant said that it is collaborating with multiple auto brands to bring CarPlay Ultra to more cars, with the Hyundai Group reportedly next in line. Each system looks unique depending on the brand's styling theme. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Hyundai's new hybrid – a promising step toward electrification
As Hyundai Group navigates the slowdown in global Electric Vehicle (EV) demand, the company has started to refocus its efforts on its existing xEV technology — the hybrid vehicle — to drive growth. Even Genesis, the group's luxury brand, has shifted from a strategy of full electrification to include hybrid configurations in its product line-up in response to the rising popularity of such vehicles. In 2011, Hyundai introduced its first full hybrid system, known as the 'Transmission Mounted Electrical Device' (TMED), with the Sonata model in Korea. This proprietary series-hybrid system features an electric motor positioned between the engine and transmission — referred to as the P2 configuration — and utilizes a dual-clutch mechanism to manage power distribution. Additionally, this system can operate solely on electric power under certain conditions. Over the past decade, Hyundai has integrated this hybrid system into several of its models. Sales of its Full Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FHEVs) surged from over 222k units in 2020 to more than 770k units in 2024, with an average growth rate of 36% and accounting for approximately 14% of its global Passenger Vehicle (PV) sales. However, Hyundai's hybrid system began to lag in fuel economy and driving performance compared to the latest models from competitors. As a result, in April 2025, the group unveiled its new Full Hybrid powertrain, known as TMED-II, which will debut in the latest Hyundai Palisade. The enhanced hybrid system not only retains the P2 motor at the transmission input but also integrates an additional motor at the engine output, known as the P1 configuration. The group claims that this innovation significantly improves fuel economy over the previous generation. Furthermore, Hyundai plans to incorporate the new hybrid system into three vehicle categories: Large, Midsize, and Compact. The same system architecture is also set to be implemented in the longitudinal powertrains of Genesis models. It is anticipated that the next-generation Hyundai hybrid system will enhance performance and fuel efficiency across various segments. The group asserts that this new hybrid system offers a 45% improvement in fuel economy and a 29% increase in power compared to Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) of the same category. We expect increased FHEV market penetration in the B and E segments, particularly in the B segment within emerging markets like India, where FHEVs are likely to replace diesel vehicles. Meanwhile, growth in the E segment is expected to be driven by Large SUVs from the Hyundai and Kia brands, as well as Genesis models. By 2030, our projections indicate that the group will expand its FHEV presence to approximately 1.3 mn units worldwide, representing over 21% of its global sales. However, as global demand for EVs rises due to technological advancements and stricter emission regulations, the growth of FHEVs is expected to slow in the latter part of the decade and eventually be surpassed by pure EVs. Nevertheless, FHEVs will continue to play a crucial role in the group's strategy to achieve its goal of full electrification. How Trump's tariffs might impact sport
"It's potentially the difference between life and death."The words of a "hugely frustrated" Lynn Calder - the head of Ineos Automotive, the car company owned by Manchester United minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe - when talking about the impact that United States tariffs would have on the its manufacturing based in Germany, the company now faces the prospect of 25% tariffs being imposed on vehicles exported to the crucial American market, with Calder admitting it was "vulnerable to tariffs" and needed "direct and urgent political intervention"., externalHer stark warning was a reminder of the effect that the duties introduced by US President Donald Trump will have on the wide range of industries linked to sport through investment or sponsorship. Global stock markets have fallen as investors reacted amid fears of inflation, but beyond the wider economic turmoil, how else could the ripples of a trade war affect the world of sport? Sponsorship The US is set to stage some of the world's biggest sports events over the next few years, including the 2026 World Cup and 2028 LA Olympics and Paralympics. These events are meant to provide overseas businesses with a key opportunity to raise their profile and boost sales in the US. Korean car manufacturer Hyundai Group, for instance, will look to take advantage of its sponsorship deal with football governing body Fifa during the Club World Cup this year, and then the World Cup in 2026. But could Trump's aggressive trade policies make such businesses think again?"I suspect some sponsors are now re-assessing how they 'activate' such deals in the US, given the trade barriers that have now been imposed," says John Zerafa, a sports event bid strategist."Why would a sponsor spend millions of pounds doing so if it is now prohibitive to sell in America?"Many sports teams and athletes are also sponsored by sportswear brands. With most of these companies relying on materials and manufacturing in Asia - where Trump has directed some of the highest tariffs - it is no surprise that shares in the likes of Nike, Adidas and Puma have all fallen sharply, with fears that higher importing costs would be passed on to sports finance expert Kieran Maguire says the impact should be limited. "For a $100 (£76.36) replica sports jersey sold in the US, manufacturing costs are likely to be in the region of $12-15 dollars at source, and maybe even lower," he says."So even if there's a 40% tariff when the goods are imported to the US, that'll only be around $4 more."Consumers are used to paying premium prices in sports retail. The manufacturer and retailer should absorb some of this, and it shouldn't impact on the amount being sold - or the commissions being earned by clubs that sell merchandise."The European Sponsorship Association told BBC Sport that it was "monitoring the situation closely and will actively seek the views of the sport sponsorship community"."As a representative body we will respond accordingly if there proves to be any sign of a material negative impact on the industry," it said. Bad blood at major events? Amid talk of a trade war, Trump's tariffs have also raised questions over the atmosphere at the various sports events it is due to host, not least the Ryder Cup in the US later this year. With European Union leaders highly critical of the policy, it would be little surprise if anti-European sentiment among the American fans is then there's the 2026 World Cup, which the US is co-hosting alongside Mexico and January, Trump vowed to impose tariffs of 25% on imports from the neighbouring countries - America's two biggest trading partners - in a move he said was designed to address the entry of opioid drug fentanyl to the US, the large amounts of undocumented migrants that have come across US borders, as well as trade month Trump claimed the political and economic tensions between the US and its World Cup co-hosts would be good for the tournament. "I think it's going to make it more exciting. Tension's a good thing," he also announced the formation of a World Cup taskforce, external which he will chair to ensure the tournament runs smoothly. Fifa has been approached for comment on their response to the US President's Trump's protectionist policies raise serious questions over the three countries' willingness and ability to work together on security for instance, or to ensure fans can gain entry visas, and then pass easily across borders. With imported materials such as steel and aluminium more expensive, there may also be concerns about the development of infrastructure for the has also spoken provocatively about making Canada 'the 51st state', leading to the US anthem being booed by Canadian fans at NBA and NHL fixtures. Could the additional tensions over tariffs mean such scenes are repeated at the World Cup or even the Olympics?"Nations and cities host global sports events for a variety of reasons, from enhancing reputation and driving global investment, to sending a message to the world that you are open, welcoming and ready to do business. It seems nothing could be further from the truth in terms of Trump's America," says Zerafa."It's not just tariffs. From forced repatriations, and hostility to the EU and Nato, to a possible takeover of Greenland and bad blood with Canada. All this makes it a very challenging backdrop for the World Cup 2026 and LA Games in 2028 to promote that narrative."The IOC has been approached for comment. Insiders told BBC Sport they are confident that Trump's love of sport - and his desire for LA 2028 to be a successful global platform towards the end of his second term in office - will ensure that preparations for the Olympics are not derailed by geopolitics. Sports products and services With retaliatory tariffs being imposed by other countries, a trade war could impact any person, team or league buying sports equipment that is made in the US, as well as American consumers of products manufactured overseas of Premier League exports its content to the US via its lucrative £2bn TV deal with NBC, but because this is deemed a service rather than a product, the tariffs do not apply."As such there should be no consequences, unless there is some form of escalation in the trade relationship between the UK and the US," says Maguire. "So the Premier League won't have to come to some sort of compromise with its broadcast partner."A bigger concern for the UK football industry will be consumers having less money to spend on tickets and TV subscriptions if fears of a recession come to pass.

Owner families in midsized firms need 3.8 yrs to rise to executive roles
Family members of owners of midsized companies in South Korea take less than four years on average to be promoted to executive management positions, a market tracker said Wednesday. A survey of the top 100 medium-sized businesses with total assets of less than 5 trillion won ($3.4 billion) each as of 2023 revealed that 101 out of 237 executives were members of the owning families, according to CEO Score. These individuals began their careers at their family-run companies at the average age of 30.7 and were promoted to executive roles at 34.5. In comparison, family members in large corporations reached executive positions slightly later, at the average age of 34.8, after joining their companies at 30.4. On average, it took 12.3 years for family members in midsized firms to advance to the position of president, slightly less than 12.9 years in large corporations. Notably, 33 family members in midsized firms were appointed to executive positions immediately upon joining the company. Hur Jin-soo, president of food company SPC Group, parent of bakery brand Paris Baguette, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun are some of the examples. On the other hand, Ottogi Chairman Ham Young-jun had the longest journey to an executive position, taking 22 years to be promoted. (Yonhap)

New Kia EV4 to join EV3, EV6 and EV9 in Kia's growing electric car line-up
Kia has revealed the first pictures of its new EV4 model ahead of the brand's EV Day, when more details of more all-electric models are set to be released. The Kia EV4 is unusual among electric cars in that it's available with two body styles: a hatchback and a saloon. Kia's design boss, Karim Habib explained the thinking behind the two different flavours of EV4, saying, 'by offering both saloon and hatchback variants, we are bringing to our customers, the unique experience of modernity and practicality that defines the Kia EV family, in a way that suits their varied lifestyles and needs. 'Offering a fresh take on the saloon, the EV4 saloon features a sleek, low nose and long-tail silhouette. The EV4 hatchback is a nimble, versatile all-rounder. Distinctive and clean, it is built to excel in any situation.' The Kia EV4 follows the design theme that Kia calls 'Opposites United', first seen on the award-winning Kia EV9 SUV. That car's bold combination of sharp lines and beefier body mouldings was carried over to the new EV3 hatchback, while some of that style was also introduced into the facelifted EV6 large hatch. The latest incarnation of Kia's 'Tiger Face' also features on these models. Now the Kia EV4 follows in a car that is less SUV-like than the EV3, but will also slot into the Kia EV range beneath the bigger EV6 hatchback. There are no details yet on the tech for the EV4, other than it's expected to sit on the Hyundai Group's E-GMP platform like the other EV models, which should mean a choice of battery sizes of 58kWh and 81kWh, with potential for an even greater range than the EV3's maximum of 375 due to the EV4's more slippery shape. Kia's EV Day is also expected to reveal more about two other new members of its EV family, a small EV2 and another crossover/SUV model, the EV5. More details on Kia's new PV5 van, also recently revealed, will be released then, too. The Kia EV4 is likely to beat the other new models to market, going on sale later in 2025.
