GS Caltex becomes first oil refiner to win Red Dot awards for app innovation
South Korean oil refiner GS Caltex said Monday that it has won two main honors at the 2025 Red Dot Design Award for its Energy Plus app, recognizing the company for its continued efforts to improve the customer experience at gas stations through digital innovation. The company became the first oil refiner to win the industry honor. The Energy Plus app received accolades in two categories — Apps and Interface & User Experience Design — under the Brands & Communication Design segment. Entries are evaluated on criteria including creativity, innovation, design completeness and emotional impact on users. Launched in 2021, the Energy Plus app has introduced new features to enhance the fueling experience, such as the Quick Refuel service, which allows customers to pre-register fuel types, amounts and payment methods for faster transactions using a barcode or PIN. This year, GS Caltex became the first Korean oil company to integrate its app with Car Play and Android Auto, enabling drivers to locate gas stations, access discounts and manage rewards directly from their car dashboards. The company also rolled out the Shake & Pay service for quick app access and updated its widget design so it can be easily used without launching the app. In recognition of these efforts, GS Caltex has held the top spot in the gas station segment of the National Customer Satisfaction Index for 17 consecutive years as of July last year. 'We will continue to improve the Energy Plus app so customers can enjoy a seamless and intuitive service experience,' said Kim Chang-soo, vice president of GS Caltex's Mobility & Marketing Division.

SK On rebrands R&D arm to boost battery innovation
South Korean battery-maker SK On has renamed its core research and development center the "Future Technology Research Institute," strengthening its commitment to innovation-led growth and next-generation battery technologies. The institute, previously the SK On Battery Research Institute, has played a central role in the company's battery development since its early days, including the world's first NCM9 cell with 90 percent nickel content as well as the introduction of Z-folding technology. The newly branded institute will focus on diversifying battery chemistries and formats — including solid-state batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries and prismatic designs — while prioritizing cost competitiveness and product safety as short-term goals. To reduce costs, SK On will advance its cell-to-pack integration and plans to complete lithium iron phosphate and midnickel cell-to-pack development by this year. A pilot dry electrode plant will also be established to cut energy and equipment costs. For safety, the company aims to complete solid-state battery prototypes using polymer-oxide gel electrolytes and complete production by the end of next year. The institute will also develop immersion cooling-based thermal runaway prevention technologies, with progress expected to accelerate following its planned merger with SK Innovation's lubricant subsidiary SK Enmove in November. 'With global competition intensifying and market conditions changing fast, we will grow SK On into a technology-driven company through a clear R&D strategy,' said Park Ki-soo, inaugural head of the institute and former head of R&D at SK On.

Daewoong's Nabota hits record H1 sales, expands to Middle East
South Korean drugmaker Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced Thursday that its botulinum toxin product, Nabota, posted 115.4 billion won ($83 million) in revenue in the first half of this year, up 28 percent from last year. With this growth, Daewoong expects to surpass 200 billion won in annual sales this year. Nabota was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2019 as the first Asian botulinum toxin. Since then, Daewoong has pursued a premium strategy focused on high purity, high safety and strict quality control standards. Nabota is now sold under the brand name Jeuveau in the US, the world's largest aesthetics toxin market, where it holds a 14 percent market share in the aesthetics segment, ranking second overall. Daewoong also continues to grow in Latin America and Southeast Asia, following major deals previously signed in Brazil and Thailand. The company recently signed a deal with Kuwait, expanding its reach to five Middle Eastern countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar — the widest regional coverage among Korean toxin brands. Alongside product expansion, Daewoong is promoting its proprietary injection technique, Nabolift, through global training programs, aiming to enhance medical outcomes and brand presence. 'Nabota is now a global top-tier brand in aesthetics,' said Yoon Joon-soo, head of Daewoong Pharmaceutical's Nabota Business Division. 'We will strengthen our global leadership with premium quality and scientific proof.'
