Stokes seeks dominant comeback as all-rounder
Among the big question marks for England ahead of a packed upcoming home summer, is the return to fitness of red-ball skipper Ben Stokes. Stokes was confirmed as the England captain for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe starting May 21, which will be followed by a five-Test series against India starting June 20 - marking the beginning of the next ICC World Test Championship cycle. There are doubts on whether the 33-year-old can go full-throttle as an all-rounder after recovering from a nasty hamstring injury during the Hamilton Test in New Zealand back in December. Elaborating on what he believes was 'one of the longest rehab periods of his career', the England captain shared that he is at the back end of his recovery process. "I always work hard," Stokes said. "My ethos when I'm injured is I come back fitter than I was before I got injured. "I've worked incredibly hard on all aspects of everything, from my cricket to fitness, and know I'm going to be in a position when I am back on the field to potentially be in physically the best possible shape I have been in." "I'm not fully through that yet but we're at the back end of the four-month period, and I'm excited to get back to playing this summer." Ponting lauds Virat Kohli's chase masterclass against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy

Opting to bat first, Pakistan posted 241 in 49.4 overs, a total that seemed competitive but ultimately fell short against India's batting prowess. Pakistan had several batters who got starts but failed to convert them into bigger scores, something Ponting pointed out as a key shortfall. Saud Shakeel (62), Mohammad Rizwan (46) and Khushdil Shah (38) all contributed, but none of them played a defining innings for the hosts. 'You look at the two scorecards, it's one, Virat making a 100, and lots of Pakistan starts without anyone going on and making a big score," Ponting noted. It just goes to show how good Sachin was, but also his longevity in the game," Ponting said. 'But with someone like Virat, you never write him off. If the hunger's still there, then I'm never going to write him off.' Meanwhile, Pakistan's campaign is now over after back-to-back losses at the tournament. Ponting questioned whether Pakistan were maximising the potential of their key players, particularly Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. 'They haven't been able to give their best back to their team. Those two guys had to stand up, they had to make big runs, and they haven't been able to do it in the first couple of games, and that might be the reason why Pakistan don't make it through to the semi-finals,' Ponting said.
