Macklin Celebrini is growing rapidly under the guidance of Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon at the IIHF Worlds
Image Via Twitter The IIHF Worlds provides way more to 18-year-old Macklin Celebrini than the usual event. Just icing the rink with hockey greats Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, the Sharks' rookie is soaking up first-class lessons on and off the ice. Whereas Celebrini should still pretty much be transforming himself into a young pro, he has been demonstrating this unusually pondered air of maturity, composure, and competitive fire. This rare chance to train alongside two Stanley Cup champions can mold him into the next big NHL star. Macklin Celebrini's mentorship under Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon accelerates his development — NHL (@NHL) Macklin Celebrini, who is on a journey from top draft pick to Calder Trophy finalist, is taking an exciting turn at the IIHF World Championship by skating with some of the game's most talented veterans. Being placed on a line with Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby allowed Celebrini to learn through osmosis, observing Crosby's positioning and discipline as well as leadership. Meanwhile, Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon has provided some silent mentorship by saying in a recent interview that Celebrini is already "miles ahead" of where he was at that age. The difference between Celebrini and an ordinary athlete consists not only of his skills but also of his mind. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Try to argue against 63 points in the first NHL season, six more in seven games at Worlds, and you will be shut down. But beyond the statistics, his impact on the locker room stands out even more. Ryan Warsofsky, who coached Celebrini through the season and is now leading the U.S. team at Worlds, described Celebrini as a man of natural leadership and elite mentality. The exposure to and immersion in a team like Canada, full of battle-hardened veterans, are only sharpening his instincts. Every moment spent together, from dinner sharing to practice to strategizing for game implementation, has become a building block in his development. Even at 18 years of age, comparisons to older professionals are already being made in his play and personality. Kasper Enjoying Star Turn as Austria Marches Through Worlds
Among the pleasures of international hockey is seeing familiar NHL stars adapt to new roles as they represent their countries. For traditional powers like Canada or the United States, that means star players adapting to depth roles. For nations without a robust NHL presence, it means NHL role players adapting to starring roles. So it's gone for Marco Kasper and Austria at 2025 IIHF Worlds, where the 21-year-old has continued his strong rookie season with the Detroit Red Wings on a global stage, helping Austria scrap its way to a place in the tournament's quarterfinals. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. Kasper is the last Red Wing standing at the event. Lucas Raymond, Simon Edvinsson, Erik Gustafsson, and Sweden just fell to Canada. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Norway have been knocked out. Moritz Seider and the Germans fell to tournament co-host Denmark. That leaves only Kasper and Austria, perhaps an unlikely success story but a compelling one. With His Days in Toronto Likely Numbered, Could Mitch Marner Be a Missing Piece to the Red Wings Puzzle? Panthers Duo a Strong Potential Red Wings Free Agent Fit Three Potential RFA Offer Sheets for the Red Wings Report: Red Wings Interested in NHL Return for Former Ducks Second Rounder According to a report from RG Media, the Detroit Red Wings are one of a handful of teams interested in facilitating an NHL return for Maxime Comtois, a 2017 draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks who spent last season in Russia, playing for the KHL's Dynamo Moscow. For the tournament, Kasper now has four goals and three assists in seven games played. It's not as though Kasper was a marginal player for the 2024-25 Red Wings. Instead, by season's end, he staked a strong claim to the number two center role. Nonetheless, in bringing his game to an international context for an Austrian team thin on NHL talent, Kasper has to assume more responsibility, especially when it comes to contributing offense. Marco Kasper GOAL🚨 wow. Really stepping up and becoming the 'guy' for Austria. Goal and assist in the first period. #LGRW #MensWorlds — Red Wings Prospects (@LGRWProspects) May 12, 2025 If 2025 Worlds are any indicator, that's a responsibility Kasper is more than fit to handle, with the young centerman thriving as Austria's leader. It should come as no surprise really, considering the various ways Kasper embraced added responsibility throughout the year in Detroit—whether in taking over a top line winger spot next to Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond, or moving back down the middle to drive his own line. The next challenge for Kasper and Austria is a quarterfinal match-up with Switzerland Thursday, where he will look to keep the unlikely run going. Austria has never finished better than sixth in an Olympics (1948), and it's best Worlds finish is third (achieved twice, in 1931 and 1947). Kasper will be looking to re-write that history, beginning with this spring's Worlds and continuing on through his fast blossoming career. Marc-Andre Fleury's Joke About Reason Behind Joining Hockey Canada
Marc-Andre Fleury's final NHL season ended with a Minnesota Wild playoff elimination at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights, and his retirement becoming official—sort of. Less than a week after playing his last NHL game, the veteran goaltender has made it clear he wasn't quite finished yet. Advertisement Fleury, 40, confirmed that he will join Team Canada at the upcoming IIHF World Championship in Sweden and Denmark, marking his first appearance at the tournament. Speaking to reporters during the Wild's end-of-season media availability, the longtime NHL netminder joked about his decision to delay full retirement. 'Yeah, after we lost that night, I was like, I'm done, you know,' Fleury said. 'But a couple of days goes by, and I was like, yeah, I think that would be pretty cool… So just a little longer, right? 'I don't know, I went home, my kids were crazy, I was like 'Geez, I gotta keep playing again.'' Fleury appeared in 26 games for the Wild this season, posting a 14-9-1 record and a .899 save percentage. He officially announced his retirement during Monday's presser following the Wild's first-round playoff loss to Vegas, but his agent Allan Walsh quickly revealed the World Championship invitation. Advertisement This will be Fleury's first time playing at the IIHF Worlds, a result of having spent most of his career in deep playoff runs, thus not being able to participate in the Worlds. The three-time Stanley Cup winner, however, did represent Canada at the 2010 Olympics. Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (29) during the warmup period against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Belski-Imagn Images Fleury will now reunite with Sidney Crosby, his close friend and former Pittsburgh Penguins teammate. The two shared the ice in Pittsburgh for 12 seasons and won three Cups together. 'I think it'll be fun to go spend some time together and yell at him in practice a bit, keep him honest,' Fleury said when asked about that reunion. Fleury is expected to start in net for Team Canada, which had only Dylan Garand and Carter George on the roster before his addition. Canada's tournament begins Saturday, May 10, against Slovenia at Avicii Arena in Stockholm.
