I Know What You Did Last Summer star left sobbing over original actor's return
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video *Major spoilers for I Know What You Did Last Summer below* Madelyn Cline has revealed that she was in tears over a shock return to I Know What You Did Last Summer. The slasher sequel was released in cinemas yesterday, focusing on a new group of Southport locals being hunted by a hook-wielding killer who is out for revenge. In the 1997 original, Sarah Michelle Gellar starred as beauty queen Helen Shivers alongside Freddie Prinze Jr, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, but her character was brutally killed off before the end. Freddie and Jennifer reprised their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James for the new reboot, which was released in cinemas yesterday, but Sarah had always maintained that she would not be following suit. In a twist worthy of the big screen, the 48-year-old actually did return to the big screen in a dream sequence that was kept majorly under wraps. Speaking to Metro, Madelyn – who starred as Danica and shared the screen with SMG for the emotional scene – opened up about the surprise moment and whether she was given any advice on stepping into the horror realm. 'Oh, yes, I was just texting her this morning! She is truly incredible,' the actress told us. 'Her and Freddie, their whole family is so sweet. 'She doesn't come in and is like, 'Okay, I'm going to give you advice. I'm going to mentor you.' It's just the way she moves… 'She's an icon, in every sense of the word, and I have always been a huge fan of hers. To have this experience with her is so surreal. 'When Jen [Kaytin Robinson, director] told me that we were going to write that scene in, I screamed. I was so excited, but then so nervous. 'The first couple takes I was shaking, like, 'Oh, my God! Holy s**t!' It is so, so iconic. I remember getting on the phone with my mom and dad at the end of that day crying, 'oh, my God, what just happened?!'' The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot threw the traditional horror rule book out of the window multiple times in the 1 hour, 51-minute run time. Not only did the three main female characters survive, Freddie's character was unveiled as one of the killers – after surviving the first two movies alongside Jennifer. But Madelyn made it clear that the newcomers wanted to 'preserve and protect' the legacy of the original as much as possible. More Trending 'I don't think we're switching anything up,' she insisted. 'What's cool about it is that we really pay respects to the original formula that works so well. 'It's not like we were going by a playbook but I think we're all big fans of the first [movie] so just by that alone, we didn't want to switch it up too much. There's something about bringing something back and modernizing it in a way… 'Some people have the idea of completely changing it. And then some of us really, really want to preserve and protect what made it so good to begin with.' I Know What You Did Last Summer is in cinemas now. Got a story? Star of 90s horror reboot wanted to go 'all gas' on gore in new film
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Madelyn Cline has lifted the lid on those brutal death scenes in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, sharing that she was excited to go 'all gas' on the gore. After what feels like years of waiting, the horror sequel is in cinemas now, and focuses on a group of friends being hunted by a vengeful hook-wielding killer. The Outer Banks star leads the cast of the revival, alongside Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Jonah Hauer-King and Tyriq Withers, while OG icons Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr reprised their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson respectively. Following director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's promise that the terrifying aspect would be 'ratcheted up to 100', movie lovers were sent into a spin when a teaser showed one character being stabbed with a harpoon. However, speaking to Metro ahead of the premiere, Madelyn – who plays Danica – told us that the slasher follow-up wasn't quite as gruesome as she was hoping for. When asked if she jumped straight into the stunts, gore and blood, or if anything went wrong at any point, she laughed: 'I think, to me, it was not gore-heavy enough … We wanted to go all gas, no breaks. 'Everything went really smoothly. We had at least a month of prep with stunts and lots and lots of tests to make sure because Jen is very meticulous. 'That's why I think she is the person to tell this story, because she's very specific. She's very meticulous, and she cares deeply about the way everything turns out. 'Everything was great.' To be fair, the trailer showed Danica enjoying a relaxing bath while her co-star was being attacked by the harpoon so she may have missed that particular moment… In the new flick, a group of friends accidentally cause a deadly car accident before covering up their involvement and making a pact to keep it a secret – something that locals in Southport know a lot about… Unfortunately for the gang, their past comes back to haunt them, and they find themselves stalked by a mysterious killer hell-bent on revenge exactly a year after the fateful incident. The original I Know What You Did Last Summer was released in 1997 and became an instant hit, with Julie and Ray jetting out to the Bahamas for the sequel the following year. With the success of the franchise so far, Madelyn conceded that the cast felt 'pressure' to do the original movies justice, while giving everything a 'modern' twist. 'Well, yes, of course! I think we knew going into it, it was going to be its own,' she continued. More Trending 'It's not a standalone, but definitely the goal was to compliment the original and bring back what made the original so good as much as we possibly could. 'But also reintroduce new elements, and give a modern twist, and hopefully bring back everything that people loved, and also give them something to look forward to.' What are you waiting for…?
