Doppler radar at RMC, Nagpur restarts after a month
Nagpur: The Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) attached to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the meteorological department ( IMD ) near Nagpur Airport is up and running again after remaining non-functional for more than a month. The RMC started issuing radar images with the three-hourly nowcast warnings about possible rains and thunderstorms in the region on Thursday. The development comes at a crucial time, as a red alert has been declared in the region, and the DWR will play a role in generating precise climatic changes in Vidarbha. The DWR went down due to a technical failure around June 20, affecting the nowcast services. The RMC was dependent on satellite images relayed from 36,000 ft above ground in the absence of radar images. The DWR has been aiding nowcast, showing crucial developments taking place over Nagpur and Central India skies for several years. Its services were badly missed during the July 5, 6, and 7 rains in Nagpur. IMD scientist Dr Rizwan Ahmed said, "During the servicing of the radar; RMC Nagpur forecaster has utilized different meteorological satellites such as INSAT-3DS and INSAT-3DR. These satellites provide images and products every 15 minutes over the Indian region, aiding in the monitoring of various severe weather phenomena and the issuance of Nowcasts."
